Download or read book Janesville written by Judith Adler and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1837, Henry Janes, one of the area's first settlers, proposed the name "Black Hawk" for the small southern Wisconsin settlement he lived in, but the US Post Office chose Janesville. The village along the Rock River was selected as the Rock County seat, and by 1860 it had grown to become Wisconsin's second largest city. Janesville developed into an important railroad town and, because of its waterpower, a milling and manufacturing center. General Motors built a large plant, and George Parker started the Parker Pen Company here. As the city grew, land was donated or set aside for recreation, and today Janesville calls itself Wisconsin's Park Place. Its population has grown to more than 62,000.
Download or read book The History of Wisconsin Volume III written by Robert C. Nesbit and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 745 pages. Book excerpt: Although the years from 1873-1893 lacked the well known, dramatic events of the periods before and after, this period presented a major transformation in Wisconsin's economy. The third volume in the History of Wisconsin series presents a balanced, comprehensive, and witty account of these two decades of dynamic growth and change in Wisconsin society, business, and industry. Concentrating on three major areas: the economy, communities, and politics and government, this volume in the History of Wisconsin series adds substantially to our knowledge and understanding of this crucial, but generally little-understood, period.

Book excerpt: Edgerton became a city in 1853. It was named after a modest railroad engineer, Benjamin Hyde Edgerton, who warned people to "wait until after I'm dead, because I might do something in the meantime to discredit the name." In the 1880s, Edgerton was the Wisconsin birthplace of Pauline Pottery, still sought by antique collectors. For more than 100 years, Edgerton was the Midwest king of tobacco. The hometown of Rascal: A Memoir of a Better Era author Sterling North, Edgerton is now a city of festivals, including Tobacco Days, Chilimania, and the Edgerton Book and Film Festival.
