Book Developments in Ground Control in Mining 1981 2020

Download or read book Developments in Ground Control in Mining 1981 2020 written by Syd S. Peng and published by Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration. This book was released on 2022-06-03 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best of ground control technology, 40 years in the making. Developments in Ground Control summarizes the objectives, methodology used, and major conclusions reached from papers presented and published in the International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) proceedings from 1981 to 2020. Because the subject areas of the papers published in the proceedings are so broad, ranging from accident training and coal/rock bursts to geology, pillar, multiseam mining, in situ stresses, roof falls, and roof supports to surface subsidence, the papers were grouped into 13 aggregate topics and addressed separately in 13 book chapters by 13 authors from 4 countries. These book chapters are a fresh look at the topics, providing new insights, sourcing older papers, and summarizing data. This is an enormous help for those seeking information on ground control. There were 1,795 papers in the 40 years of ICGCM proceedings in more than 40 ground control topical areas. It would certainly be very time consuming if not impossible to find the right papers of interest in a timely manner. This book makes it easy for interested people to find the progress, application, and achievements of certain techniques from the past 40 years and how they affected the field of ground control and the world mining industry, in particular, the United States. Generally speaking, most researchers tend to favor recent developments when performing a literature search, ignoring or considering old papers outdated. In contrast, over the last 40 years, most research findings for a specific topic in ICGCM received continuing attention for subsequent development or repeated citations if applications were successful.

Book Mining induced Seismicity at the Lucky Friday Mine Seismic Events of Magnitude 2 5 1989 1994

Download or read book Mining induced Seismicity at the Lucky Friday Mine Seismic Events of Magnitude 2 5 1989 1994 written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the types of seismic events that occur in a deep mine provides a foundation for assessing the seismic characteristics of these events and the degree to which initiation of these events can be anticipated or controlled. This study is a first step toward developing such an understanding of seismic events generated by mining in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. It is based on information developed in the course of a long-standing rock burst research effort undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Coeur d'Alene Mining District mines and regional universities. This information was collected for 39 seismic events with local magnitudes greater than 2.5 that occurred between 1989 and 1994. One of these events occurred, on average, every 8 weeks during the study period. Five major types of characteristic events were developed from the data; these five types describe all but two of the 39 events that were studied. The most common types of events occurred, on average, once every 30 weeks. The characteristic mechanisms, first-motion patterns, damage patterns, and relationships to mining and major geologic structures were defined for each type of event. These five types of events need to be studied further to assess their ability to camouflage clandestine nuclear tests as well as the degree to which they can be anticipated and controlled.

Book Role of fault slip on mechanisms of rock burst damage Lucky Friday Mine Idaho USA

Download or read book Role of fault slip on mechanisms of rock burst damage Lucky Friday Mine Idaho USA written by B. G. White and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various methods of monitoring slip movements on bedding planes, as well as examination of rock burst damage in stopes, suggest that many rock bursts in the Lucky Friday Mine are closely associated with these movements. Slip displacements along bedding simultaneously reduce the physical dimensions of stopes and increase compressive stress along stope margins. Such changes, in turn, contribute directly to sudden failures of rock and cemented sandfill surrounding stopes. We believe that the reduction of rock burst hazards must be based on a clear understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. The current work emphasizes the mechanical role of wall rock movement and seismicity in generating conditions that promote rock burst damage. Based on our interpretations of these mechanisms, we briefly address several hypothetical practices that could influence rock burst hazards in similar mining situations. The overall goal of this research is to advance the NIOSH mission of improving the health and safety of the nation's workers.
