Book Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming

Download or read book Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming written by Jon Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many engineering, operations, and scientific applications include a mixture of discrete and continuous decision variables and nonlinear relationships involving the decision variables that have a pronounced effect on the set of feasible and optimal solutions. Mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems combine the numerical difficulties of handling nonlinear functions with the challenge of optimizing in the context of nonconvex functions and discrete variables. MINLP is one of the most flexible modeling paradigms available for optimization; but because its scope is so broad, in the most general cases it is hopelessly intractable. Nonetheless, an expanding body of researchers and practitioners — including chemical engineers, operations researchers, industrial engineers, mechanical engineers, economists, statisticians, computer scientists, operations managers, and mathematical programmers — are interested in solving large-scale MINLP instances.

Book Smoothing of Mixed Complementarity Problems

Download or read book Smoothing of Mixed Complementarity Problems written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors introduce a smoothing approach to the mixed complementarity problem, and study the limiting behavior of a path defined by approximate minimizers of a nonlinear least squares problem. The main result guarantees that, under a mild regularity condition, limit points of the iterates are solutions to the mixed complementarity problem. The analysis is applicable to a wide variety of algorithms suitable for large-scale mixed complementarity problems.

Book Complementarity Modeling in Energy Markets

Download or read book Complementarity Modeling in Energy Markets written by Steven A. Gabriel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This addition to the ISOR series introduces complementarity models in a straightforward and approachable manner and uses them to carry out an in-depth analysis of energy markets, including formulation issues and solution techniques. In a nutshell, complementarity models generalize: a. optimization problems via their Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions b. on-cooperative games in which each player may be solving a separate but related optimization problem with potentially overall system constraints (e.g., market-clearing conditions) c. conomic and engineering problems that aren’t specifically derived from optimization problems (e.g., spatial price equilibria) d. roblems in which both primal and dual variables (prices) appear in the original formulation (e.g., The National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) or its precursor, PIES). As such, complementarity models are a very general and flexible modeling format. A natural question is why concentrate on energy markets for this complementarity approach? s it turns out, energy or other markets that have game theoretic aspects are best modeled by complementarity problems. The reason is that the traditional perfect competition approach no longer applies due to deregulation and restructuring of these markets and thus the corresponding optimization problems may no longer hold. Also, in some instances it is important in the original model formulation to involve both primal variables (e.g., production) as well as dual variables (e.g., market prices) for public and private sector energy planning. Traditional optimization problems can not directly handle this mixing of primal and dual variables but complementarity models can and this makes them all that more effective for decision-makers.

Book The PATH Solver

Download or read book The PATH Solver written by University of Wisconsin--Madison. Computer Sciences Dept and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The PATH Solver is an implementation of a stabilized Newton method for the solution of the Mixed Complementarity Problem. The stabilization scheme employs a path-generation procedure which is used to construct a piecewise-linear path from the current point to the Newton point; a step length acceptance criterion and a non-monotone pathsearch are then used to choose the next iterate. The algorithm is shown to be globally convergent under assumptions which generalize those required to obtain similar results in the smooth case. Several implementation issues are discussed, and extensive computational results obtained from problems commonly found in the literature are given."

Book Complementarity Problems in Engineering Mechanics Models and Solution

Download or read book Complementarity Problems in Engineering Mechanics Models and Solution written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large class of problems in engineering mechanics involves a so-called "complementarity" relationship representing the orthogonality of two sign-constrained vectors. Typical instances are plasticity laws and contact-like conditions. For state problems, the formulation leads to a mixed complementarity problem (MCP) whereas in synthesis (e.g. minimum weight design) or identification problems, a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) is obtained. The aim of this paper is two-fold. Firstly, it describes, through two typical models, how some important engineering mechanics problems can be formulated elegantly and naturally as either an MCP or an MPEC. Secondly, it describes a powerful computer-oriented environment for constructing and solving these mathematical programming problems, with features such as sparsity and automatic differentiation facilities being transparently accessible. This involves the use of the modeling language GAMS (an acronym for General Algebraic Modeling System) and its associated mathematical programming solvers (e.g. the industry standard MCP solver PATH). A simple generic model suitable for solving the state problem for trusses is used to clarify the syntax of GAMS models and to illustrate the ease with which they can be built and solved.
