Download or read book Robin Linnet written by E. F. Benson and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robin Linnet is a fun and mirthful novel about college students 19-year-old Damon and 20-year-old Pythias (also known as Jim Lethbridge and Robin Linnet) sitting together and exploring Socrates's Apology. Excerpt: "AMON and Pythias, collegiately and colloquially known as Day and Pie, were seated in Damon's room in the great quadrangle, on two chairs, side by side, with a candle on the table that guttered in the draught, and a copy of "Socrates's Apology" (in the original Greek) between them. Between them also, propped up against the candle, was a firmly literal translation of what they were reading, to which they both constantly referred."
Download or read book Robin Linnet written by Edward Frederic Benson and published by Bibliotech Press. This book was released on 1919 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book starts with a reference to Damon and Pythias, which in the Victorian age -- and apparently also into the first few decades of the 20th century, given this book's publication date -- was code for same-sex love. Here the love that dare not speak its name (but almost does, as is characteristic of Benson's work) is between Robin and his best buddy from (Eton and then) Cambridge. But the bond between the two young men is completely incidental to the main plot: in fact, as the story progresses, it turns out it is primarily about Robin's mother, the rather wonderful Lady Grote and how, when WW1 upsets her pleasure-seeking existence and demands something more of her, she manages to step up to the occasion. The book has excellent characterisation, and is beautifully written, with witty dialogue, lyrical descriptions of the natural world, and an ending a tad too edifying for modern sensibilities. Download or read book Hope and Happiness in Bluebell Wood written by Ali McNamara and published by Sphere. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Ali McNamara novel is the perfect escape. Welcome to Bluebell Wood where the sun shines, the locals are kind and there's something more than a little bit magical about the place. Ava loves city life but when something happens to make her feel unsafe, she retreats to the calm and quiet of Bluebell Wood. The once high-flying Ava now locks herself away in her fairy-tale cottage, only leaving to explore the trails of the nearby woods or to potter in the garden with her dog, Merlin. When Ava begins to feed the wild birds that flock to her bird table, they start leaving her trinkets of appreciation in return. The gifts seem innocent at first, but they soon seem to take on a deeper meaning. It isn't until Ava meets Callum, the handsome parish priest, that she can't help but wonder if the birds might have been trying to get her out of the house all along. But will their curious behaviour help to heal Ava, and transform her and Callum into the lovebirds they clearly long to be? Praise for Ali McNamara: An enchanting escape. Pure magic!'
