Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ricardo Quinones has followed his first volume of poems, Through the Years (2010), with a second, dedicated in large part to his wife, Roberta. Unlike other such volumes of personal interest, these poems begin with specific qualities that are then raised to the general. The poem "Odalisque" transfigures women, even in their sexual composure, into the sources of culture and civilization. Several of the poems are humorous, such as the one describing the couple's futile attempts to set aside Tuesday as a day of abstinence. All of these poems are rich in historical allusions. The second part of the volume contains a philosophical poem, "Rocks and Their Fellow Travelers," which begins with the premise that nowhere in the Bible does it say that God created rocks and then proceeds to compare the nature of these anti-gods with Satan, Esau, Sisyphus, Iago, and Goneril (from King Lear). The volume adds to the very popular "Wallet Poems" from Through the Years and then finishes with "Profanities," a poem that the late poet and critic Aino Passonen of Santa Monica declared made Quinones "a major American poet."

Some poems have been inspired by her personal experiences and some from trying to understand the world around her. There is at least one poem for everyone to relate to, if not several. Anyone who has family, friends, a significant other, a bad or good day, lived military life, and more will have something to relate to. In fact, anyone who has walked this journey through life should enjoy this book. Roberta Dawn hopes these poems can help people understand others better and understand their own thoughts and feelings. These poems can also help others know they are not alone, that others may have faced similar challenges and may be experiencing similar emotions. Life's Journey is a variety of poems written about love, heartache, sadness, happiness, grief, and life from the author's perspective. Each poem is written from the author's heart as they came to her like a gift in the wind when she needed the words to express her thoughts, feelings, love, and sometimes pain. Every word is written with many possible impressions, feelings, thoughts, experiences. These poems are meant to be read and reread, to be read alone and shared, and to be appreciated and enjoyed.

Book The Etiquette of Early Northern Verse

Download or read book The Etiquette of Early Northern Verse written by Roberta Frank and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2022-05-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Etiquette of Early Northern Verse, Roberta Frank peers into the northern poet’s workshop, eavesdropping as Old English and Old Norse verse reveal their craft secrets. This book places two vernacular poetries of the long Viking Age into conversation, revealing their membership in a single community of taste, a traditional stylistic ecology that did serious political and historical work. Each chapter seeks the codes of a now-extinct verse technique. The first explores the underlying architecture of the two poetries, their irregularities of pace, startling formal conventions, and tight verbal detail work. The passage of time has worn away most of the circumstantial details that literary scholars in later periods take for granted, but the public relations savvy and aural and syntactic signals of early northern verse remain to some extent retrievable and relatable, an etiquette prized and presumably understood by its audiences. The second and longest chapter investigates the techniques used by early northern poets to retrieve and organize the symmetries of language. It illustrates how supererogatory alliteration and rhyme functioned as aural punctuation, marking off structural units and highlighting key moments in the texts. The third and final chapter describes the extent to which both corpora reveled in negations, litotes, indirection, and down-toners, modes that forced audiences to read between half-lines, to hear what was not said. By decluttering and stripping away excess, by drawing words through a tight mesh of meter, alliteration, and rhyme, the early northern poet filtered out dross and stitched together a poetics of stark contrasts and forebodings. Poets and lovers of poetry of all periods and places will find much to enjoy here. So will students in Old English and Old Norse courses.

Book excerpt: She came walking out of the desert, just as the famous poet Rimbaud had centuries before. Now the nameless woman lies horribly scarred and close to death in an asylum deep in the North African desert. An Australian official, a man code-named John Devlin, has come to question her. It is clear that the woman and Devlin share some kind of past, and all kinds of secrets. As the wind calls up a deadly sandstorm, the inhabitants of the asylum discover they are linked by a diary written by Rimbaud. Over the next 120 years, everyone who sees the diary will want it. Most will do anything to possess it. For the ruthless Polish aristocrat Aleksander Walenska, the diary holds secrets that will bring him wealth and power; for his troubled and religious son Czeslaw, it is a book of death, a penance to be fulfilled by sacrifice; for Czeslaw’s sister, it is a book of the desert that will redeem her family’s name; for Devlin, the diary is worthless and the desert is not a place of revelation but of modern terrorism. Only the nameless woman, whose dark past is entwined with those who would possess Rimbaud’s diary at any cost, knows the true worth of the book . . .

Book excerpt: My thought on my poetry is that across the course of my life it has been wrung from me like slivers from my deepest, most passionate parts. The tenor varies with my age and circumstance at the time of writing. The poems I have included not as an editor might do, but as a biographer. They reflect my emotional life and critical events over the years. While older and wiser, in matters of the heart I remain open, vulnerable and ever grateful that in my times of greatest joy and greatest pain slight slivers of poetry have permitted me to state my deepest feelings in a manner that gives them dignity when all the world might think me mad to love or hurt so passionately.I have divided the poems loosely into groups by topic. "Miniatures" are of people in my life; "Love Poems" of different aspects of romantic love, love in disrepair and friendship; "Moments" reflect very brief actual events presented as expressions of brief observations, questions, or insights; and "Musings" are of views on a variety of topics and events in my life. The last section, "Bereft," are cameos of emotionally disturbed grade schoolers with whom I have done speech language therapy. While these poems do not in any way provide a biography, they may at times suggest the maturing and adapting of my ideas over time. My hope is that the poems will bring the reader at least some pleasure.
