Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncle Will of Wildwood is a warm and humorous memoir of the nineteenth-century Bluegrass that recalls a defining period of Kentucky's past. It was a time of self-sufficient country estates when, as Thomas D. Clark writes in his introduction, "every Bluegrass farm gate was the entryway into a ruggedly independent domain." Wildwood was such a place, ruled by the affable Uncle Will of this classic book. Everything at Wildwood revolved around Will Goddard, who was "a cross between a hurricane and an electric fan." Uncle Will—with his mad dashes into Harrodsburg for mowing-machine parts, his habit of leaving his stallion Black Joe unhitched, his irrepressible spirit, and his uncanny perception of the potential of a horse—became a family and community legend. A celebration of Kentucky before the arrival of the modern age, Uncle Will of Wildwood fondly remembers life before the automobile, before radio and television, and before growing cities eroded the quiet and grand way of country life. Though Uncle Will's story is nearly two hundred years old, his lessons of self-sufficiency, community, and eccentricity are still pertinent today. In print for the first time since 1974, Uncle Will of Wildwood captures the riotous spirit of one Kentucky man and the flavor of country life.
Download or read book On Drawing written by Roger Winter and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for the beginning art major or for the general student who wants to learn more about drawing. Drawing teachers and advanced art students may also find it useful. While this book is about underlying visual principles and not naturalistic styles, it relies heavily on the study of objects, as mutual experiences in that world heighten communication between student and teacher and student and student. Through the study of objects, the student of drawing discovers how to see more intensely, compose, use the materials of drawing, work intuitively, and criticize. The chapters, as arranged, provide a coherent system of study. But regardless of any particular approach, all the ideas presented are meant to help gain an intimate, working knowledge of what the verb 'to draw' actually means. A Collegiate Press book

Download or read book Circle of Fire written by William F. Axton and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the theater actually known and frequented by Dickens in order to show in terms of concrete structural analysis of his novels the nature of the predominantly "dramatic" or "theatrical" quality of his genius. Author William F. Axton finds that the three principal dramatic modes or "voices" that were characteristically Victorian were burlesquerie, grotesquerie, and the melodramatic, and that the novelist's vision of the world around him was drawn from ways of seeing transformed from those elements in the popular playhouse of his day—as revealed in the structure and theme of Sketches by Boz, Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, and other novels. The last half of the study analyzes representative passages from the novels to illustrate the way in which the principal modes of nineteenth-century theatrical style are transmuted into the three important "voices" of the novelist's prose style. The first two voices—the burlesque and the grotesque—are identified by their exploitation of the stylistic features of farce, extravaganza, and harlequinade, of incongruous likeness and deliberate confusion between realms. The melodramatic voice, on the other hand, seeks to exploit in prose the musically rhythmic and poetic resources of the theater for the purpose of atmosphere, moral commentary, and structural unity.
