Download or read book The Reception of Robert Burns in Europe written by Murray Pittock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Burns (1759 –1796), Scotland's national poet and pioneer of the Romantic Movement, has been hugely influential across Europe and indeed throughout the world. Burns has been translated seven times as often as Byron, with 21 Norwegian translations alone recorded since 1990; he was translated into German before the end of his short life, and was of key importance in the vernacular politics of central and Eastern Europe in the nineteenth century. This collection of essays by leading international scholars and translators traces the cultural impact of Burns' work across Europe and includes bibliographies of major translations of his work in each country covered, as well as a publication history and timeline of his reception on the continent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Burns in Global Culture is a collection which breaks new ground in treating Burns' poetry and influence in an international context. Widely recognized as poet of global significance in the nineteenth century, Burns' reputation has suffered from the critical turns in Romanticism since 1945 and is only now beginning to be seen in its proper context. Following on from the celebrations across the world to mark Burns' 250th anniversary in 2009, this collection asks questions concerning the nature of Burns' global influence in the United States, Europe and the Commonwealth, examines the extraordinary ways in which his writing combines a distinctively progressive agenda with deceptively traditional styles, and emplaces his reputation at the heart of questions of American exceptionalism, European democracy, British imperial identities, Italian politics, French literary history, questions of desire and sexuality, the Burns Supper and the extraordinary cult of Burns statues. 'Robert Burns in Global Culture' combines literary criticism, history, cultural theory and comparative literature to create a set of powerful, new and unique directions in the study of this major Romantic poet.

Book excerpt: From 2002 to 2004 Présence Suisse funded a 'Swiss Fellow in the UK' programme in five universities in the four regions of the United Kingdom which enabled a Swiss writer or academic to be based in one university and to undertake short visits to the other four. Three Swiss Fellows, each writing in one of the official languages of Switzerland, took part. This book marks the success of the programme and the events which it generated by assembling contributions from participants and organisers and from others involved in Swiss studies in the United Kingdom. The essays deal with aspects of perception and mediation which occur in the interchange between two countries. There are views of each country acquired by citizens of the other through travel or short sojourns; comments on the effect on their writing from writers who have adopted the other country by living there permanently; and accounts of interchange through critical appreciation, translation and cultural borrowing.

Download or read book The Astonishment of Words written by Victor Proetz and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One, two! one, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. The late Victor Proetz was by vocation a visual artist who created many distinguished architectural and decorative designs. His favorite avocation, however, was to explore the possibilities (and impossibilities) of words, especially words in translation, and to share his discoveries. As Alastair Reid says in his foreword, "He turned words over in his head, he listened to them, he unraveled them, he looked them up, he played with them, he passed them on like presents, all with an unjadeable astonishment." What, Proetz wondered, do some of the familiar and not-so-familiar works of English and American literature sound like in French? In German? "How," he asked, "do you say 'Yankee Doodle' in French—if you can?" And "How do they say 'Hounyhnhnm' and 'Cheshire Cat' and things like that in German?" And, in either language, "How, in God's name, can you possibly say 'There she blows!'?" This book, unfortunately left incomplete on his death in 1966, contains many of his answers. They are given not only in the assembled texts and translations but also in his wry, curious, sometimes hilarious commentaries. None of it is scholarly in any formal, academic sense—"and yet," Reid reminds us, "his is precisely the kind of enthusiastic curiosity that gives scholarship its pointers."
