Book Saint Robert Bellarmine Collection 3 Books

Download or read book Saint Robert Bellarmine Collection 3 Books written by Saint Robert Bellarmine and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 1369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SAINT ROBERT BELLARMINE COLLECTION [3 BOOKS] Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J. was an Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. He was a professor of theology and later rector of the Roman College, and in 1602 became archbishop of Capua. Bellarmine supported the reform decrees of the Council of Trent. He was canonized in 1930 and named a Doctor of the Church. Bellarmine is also widely remembered for his role in the Giordano Bruno affair and the Galileo affair. Bellarmine's books bear the stamp of their period; the effort for literary elegance had given place to a desire to pile up as much material as possible, to embrace the whole field of human knowledge, and incorporate it into theology. His controversial works provoked many replies, and were studied for some decades after his death. At Leuven he made extensive studies in the Church Fathers and scholastic theologians, which gave him the material for his book De scriptoribus ecclesiasticis (Rome, 1613). It was later revised and enlarged by Sirmond, Labbeus, and Casimir Oudin. Bellarmine wrote the preface to the new Sixto-Clementine Vulgate. —BOOKS— A COMMENTARY ON THE BOOK OF PSALMS STEPS OF ASCENSION TO GOD THE ART OF DYING WELL PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Download or read book Jesuit Philosophy on the Eve of Modernity written by Cristiano Casalini and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesuit Philosophy on the Eve of Modernity, edited by Cristiano Casalini, is the first comprehensive volume to trace the origins and development of Jesuit philosophy during the first century of the Society of Jesus (1540–c.1640). Filling a gap in the history of philosophy, the volume seeks to identify and examine the limits of the “distinctiveness” of Jesuit philosophers during an age of dramatic turbulence in Western thought. The eighteen contributions by some of the leading specialists in various fields are divided into four sections, which guide the reader through cultural milieus, thematic issues, and intellectual biographies to show the impact of Jesuit philosophy on early modern thought.

Book excerpt: Spanning two millennia, with particular attention to the post-Reformation period, and including key thinkers, both Catholic and non-Catholic, Eucharistic Doctors argues that the Eucharist "makes" the Church. The thirty "Eucharistic doctors" included in this volume are not doctors in the formal sense of the term, but in the broad Christian tradition of eucharistic thought. Ranging from the patristic age to contemporary time, and embracing both the Eastern and Western Churches, they include Ignatius of Antioch, Hippolytus, Ambrose, John Chrysostom, Augustine, Maximus the Confessor, Thomas Aquinas, Wyclif, Luther, Calvin, Thomas Cranmer, George Herbert, Bellarmine, Jeremy Taylor, Schleiermacher, Newman, and many more. Although they represent different geographical locations, time periods, languages, and traditions, they all have this in common: a recognition of the Eucharist as central to the Christian faith. Book Ascent of the Mind to God

    Book Details:
  • Author : St. Robert Bellarmine
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2022-01-03
  • ISBN : 9781957066103
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Ascent of the Mind to God written by St. Robert Bellarmine and published by . This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ascent of the Mind to God, stands apart from Bellarmine's Apologetic works. Written after a retreat in 1614, he christened it his "Benjamin", because it was born in old age, and the first of many other spiritual works which have been popular for centuries. The Ascent proposes 15 steps of a ladder, beginning with man, the microcosm of all creation, being a development of Homo creates est which are found in the first principle of St. Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises. Moving the microcosm, he turns his attention to the macrocosm, nature, the elements, the heavens, and then the heavens above, the angels and the very nature of God. St. Robert stops at each step to search out the vestige of God within creation, and to challenge the soul to consider its final end at each turn. Every movement up this ladder is a lesson in itself of holy wisdom, drawn from the pages of Sacred Scripture, assisting men in being more prayerful, and assist them in finding time for contemplation in their busy lives. St. Robert draws on his own experience, as he was a contemplative mystic in spite of his very busy life, and exhorts the reader to overcome struggles of prayer and focus on God, which he undoubtedly had to fight back at every turn. Published here in a new translation, the Ascent of the Mind to God by the Ladder of Creation will help the reader: -to contemplate God in everyday things; -to challenge their life, habits, and vices; -to fight distraction in prayer; -to see in all things the power, beauty, wisdom, mercy, and also justice of God. This books is ideal for personal prayer and meditation, or for making a visit to the blessed Sacrament, whether in a Church or an hour of adoration.
