Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers various metallurgical topics, viz. roasting of sulfide minerals, matte smelting, slag, reduction of oxides and reduction smelting, interfacial phenomena, steelmaking, secondary steelmaking, role of halides in extraction of metals, refining, hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy. Each chapter is illustrated with appropriate examples of applications of the technique in extraction of some common, reactive, rare or refractory metal together with worked out problems explaining the principle of the operation.
Download or read book Occurrence and Recovery of Certain Minor Metals in the Smelting refining of Copper written by John G. Parker and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important quantities of gold, silver, platinum-group metals, selenium, tellurium, and arsenic are recovered in the processing of copper concentrates. The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was to determine the occurence of these elements in copper ores and to trace their distribution during subsequent processing steps. The study describes the important areas supplying concentrates, precipitates, and unrefined copper to the copper smelting and refining ndustry in a composite of the years 1971-74. The relative importance of these areas as a source of the respective byproducts is assessed. The lack of certain quantitative and assay data, recycling of dusts and slags, and the addition of scrap to the feed often complicates calculations and estimations of the byproducts in the smelter-refinery throughptus. Such volatile or low-boiling point elements as arsenic, slenium, nad tellurium may be lost in gaseous and other emissions in various processign stages, or they may be concentrated in slags and residues for which samples were not available. the effects of antipollution legislation to improve control of sulfurous and other emissions that may affect recovery of certain byprodcuts was noted. A section on newer technology illustrating hydrometallurgical techniques that may affect the recovery of minor metals is included.

Book excerpt: Chemical Metallurgy, Second Edition provides the fundamental chemical principles and demonstrates the application of these principles to process metallurgy, materials synthesis and processing, and corrosion protection. The book consists of nine chapters. The first five chapters emphasize the fundamental chemical principles involved in metallurgical reactions. An additional chapter on slag chemistry has also been added in this second edition in order to provide a more thorough understanding of slag-metal reactions. The final three chapters focus on the applications of the chemical principles to the extraction and refining of metals, metal melting and recycling, and metallic corrosion. The book will be of value to materials students and teachers and scientists and engineers entering employment in the metallurgical and materials processing and metal finishing industries.
