Book Observing Agriculture in Early Twentieth Century Italy

Download or read book Observing Agriculture in Early Twentieth Century Italy written by Federico D'Onofrio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Economists in Early Twentieth-Century Italy describes how Italian agricultural economists collected information about the economy of Italy, between the Giolittian and the Fascist era. The book carefully describes three main forms of economic observation: enquiries, statistics, and farm surveys. For each of these forms of observation, the main participants to the investigation are discussed with their respective agendas, alongside the purposes of the investigation, and its practical constraints. This work introduces the concept of "stakeholder statistics", and stresses the two-way relation between the observer and the observed in the co-production of observational knowledge. Practices of observation developed together with agricultural economics as a discipline and a profession. The study of forms of investigation therefore shed light on the constitution of a coherent and self-conscious group of agricultural economists in Italy, and the scientific and methodological alliances they forged with agricultural economists elsewhere in Europe. Thanks to ambitious research projects, Ghino Valenti in the Giolittian period, and Arrigo Serpieri, after the First World War, led the transformation of Italian agricultural economists from agents of estate owners, to social and economic experts in the service of the Italian state. The group of agricultural economists who gathered around Serpieri played an important role in supplying the ideology of the agricultural elites with economic content, especially after the First World War, along lines that resemble the development of agrarian ideologies in other countries of Central Europe. This work discusses how observation entered the political debate on agricultural policies of the Fascist regime, namely the so-called Ruralismo.

  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Poverty in Italy written by Chiara Saraceno and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three experienced Italian sociologists explore the structural and cultural dimensions of poverty in their country. Comparing Italy’s regime with other European countries, they consider the interplay of conditions in the labour market, the family and welfare arrangements as causes of poverty. This in-depth analysis explores how forced familialism, unbalanced gender arrangements, territorial cleavages and sluggish growth have rendered Italy vulnerable to financial crisis. As old risks of poverty have worsened, new risks have emerged and children, the working poor and migrants have become the ‘new poor’. Combining theoretical and empirical tools, this is a topical fresh take on the understanding of poverty in Italy that is even more crucial considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Book Janello Torriani and the Spanish Empire

Download or read book Janello Torriani and the Spanish Empire written by Cristiano Zanetti and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janello Torriani, known in the Spanish-speaking world as Juanelo Turriano (Cremona, Italy ca. 1500 – Toledo, Spain 1585), is the greatest among Renaissance inventors and constructors of machines. Contemporary literates and mathematicians celebrated Janello Torriani and his creations in their writings. It is striking how such fame turned into nearly complete oblivion, leaving only a few clues of a blurred and distorted memory dispersed here and there. This book wishes to show the central role that artisans formed in the Vitruvian tradition played in demonstrating through practical mathematics an increasing and positive control over Nature, a step rooted in humanist culture and foundational for the understanding of those historical processes known as the Scientific and the Industrial Revolutions.

Book Economists and War

Download or read book Economists and War written by Fabrizio Bientinesi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War and economic power have been interwoven in the thought of scholars since the beginnings of economic science, and views on the role of war in the economy have shifted dramatically as the world order has changed. The centenary of World War I has offered the opportunity for increased reflection on this topic, particularly as the war itself stimulated new directions for both research and the development of theory. Economists and War brings together expert contributors who are united in their commitment to exploring this classic subject from innovative and heterodox points of view. The chapters presented in the book delve into a wide range of perspectives from Japan in the Second World War and Italy in the First; the debate on State intervention among German-speaking authors to the debate on the economic bases of perpetual peace; and from Keynes, who wrote on the ‘irrationality of war’, to Sismondi, who saw war as an opportunity for economic development, and not only for nation-states. This volume is essential reading for scholars of the history of economic thought, international political economy and intellectual history. It is also of great interest to those studying military and naval history.

Book The Cassa per il Mezzogiorno the World Bank and the Model for Italian Economic Development

Download or read book The Cassa per il Mezzogiorno the World Bank and the Model for Italian Economic Development written by Amedeo Lepore and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research, carried out in original documents by the World Bank, which were intended exclusively for internal use and were made available to scholars only a few years ago, tackles the theme of the extraordinary intervention in Southern Italy from an international perspective. The book provides an updated view of the issues concerning the regions of Southern Italy, as well as the solutions proposed for the “Southern Question” during the years of the post-war reconstruction of Italy, creating the only period of convergence – considering the whole of the history of united Italy – between Southern and Northern Italy and between the entire country and the most advanced Western economies during the golden age. The volume enhances our understanding of such a decisive development phase, especially within the framework of both Italian and international economic history, following the peacetime rebuilding of Italy and before the crisis of the 1970s, while providing very useful elements in order to analyse the current events of both the Mezzogiorno and all of Italy.

Book Oil Economics and Policy

Download or read book Oil Economics and Policy written by Alberto Clo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 20th century society, oil has played a fundamental role not only from the economic point of view, but also from the point of view of the political relationships established between major Western countries and oil-producing countries. A survey into oil history, its market dynamics and price evolution, is essential for a deeper understanding of modern industry and world economy, as world development depends on oil supplies, prices, and its political accessibility. Oil Economics and Policy follows the historical development of the oil industry, and inevitably also covers many aspects of energy resource economy. In so doing, it pays particular attention to one aspect, namely, the fixing of oil prices. This is mainly in order to attempt to understand whether, and by how much, the structural transformations that the oil industry has undergone during the various phases of its existence - and the various market structures deriving from them - have influenced the dynamics of oil prices. Alberto Clô is Professor of Industrial Economics at the University of Bologna. Minister of Industry and Trade during Lamberto Dini's government (January 1995-May 1996), he has been a member both of national and international scientific boards and of ministerial committees. He is author of numerous writings on industrial and energy economies and editor-in-chief of the journal Energia.
