Book Fishes in the Freshwaters of Florida

Download or read book Fishes in the Freshwaters of Florida written by Robert H. Robins and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive identification guide to the 222 species of fishes in Florida’s fresh waters. Each species is presented with color photographs, key characteristics for identification, comparisons to similar species, habitat descriptions, and dot distribution maps. Florida's unique mix of species includes some of the world's favorite sport fishes, the Tarpon and Largemouth Bass. This guide also features three species native only to Florida—the Seminole Killifish, Flagfish, and Okaloosa Darter—and the smallest freshwater fish in North America, the Least Killifish. Ranging from the panhandle to the Everglades, their habitats include springs, creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps, marshes, and man-made canals. As Florida's human population grows, the state's freshwater environments are being changed in ways that threaten its native fishes. This book provides important information on the diversity, distribution, and environmental needs of both native and nonindigenous species, helping us monitor and take care of Florida's water and its aquatic inhabitants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses basic questions concerning the ecological relationships and current conditions of the major river systems in Florida . . There have been relatively few comprehensive studies made of the rivers of Florida. There is, to be sure, voluminous information that addresses various aspects of riverine ecology. However, little such information has been collected in a way that allows even a preliminary understanding of the driving forces that determine how the diverse freshwater and associated brackish systems function. This lack of useful data is the product of a fundamental ignorance concerning the scale of endeavor, both spatially and temporally, that is needed if we are to understand and, parenthetically, manage the major drainage systems of this area of the country (Livingston, 1987). Research used to address management problems should entail a continuous series of interrelated studies, descriptive and experimental, that answer the immediate (and often less important) questions that are asked on a day-to-day basis. The research should also be designed to answer questions that have not yet been asked. In other words, ecosystem research should be organized on an appropriate scale so that system-wide processes are understood and pr

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A highly useful and interesting reference for ichthyologists, recreational fish enthusiasts and those working in Florida waters . . . a worthy addition.” —Marine Biology Research The most comprehensive book about Florida’s marine fishes ever produced, Marine Fishes of Florida includes hundreds of photographs and descriptions of species you’ll encounter—plus many that are rare—when diving, snorkeling, kayaking, or fishing. Coverage includes both the Atlantic and Gulf coastline, from habitats near the shore to deeper waters. Fishes found in coastal rivers and other brackish waters are fully represented, as are offshore species that venture into Florida’s waters often enough to be called “occasional visitors.” David B. Snyder and George H. Burgess intertwine personal observations with results from research studies to provide accurate—often surprising—details. The result is a set of beautifully succinct identification descriptions coupled with information about each species’ natural history. From the largest sharks to the smallest cryptic gobies, from homely toadfishes to the spectacularly colored reef fishes, this book is certain to help you better understand the fish you’ve seen or hooked. Features of Marine Fishes of Florida include: Color photographs by leading marine photographers Differentiation of adult and juvenile forms Coverage of 133 fish families and hundreds of species Size and geographical range data Natural history and conservation notes Explanations of geologic history and current habitats “Entertaining and informative . . . I think this book will be a great addition to the library of any biologist, fisher, diver or student, and I strongly recommend this book to anyone wishing to expand their knowledge of Florida fishes.” —Environmental Biology of Fishes

Download or read book Life Along the Apalachicola River written by Jim McClellan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Apalachicola River Valley, outdoor adventure is a way of life. It's a culture of fishing, hunting and everything in between, but this culture is fading as overdevelopment upstream dries up the region's natural resources. These narratives are part of an effort to capture the memories and keep those traditions alive. The quirky stories include calling a gator to a creek bank, exploring the origin of "Polehenge" and understanding just what makes Catawba worms so special. Learn the basics of frog gigging and ponder how many fish make a "mess." Author and Florida native Jim McClellan revives local stories from the banks of the Big River and preserves the allure of this fading swamp paradise.

Book Tales from a Florida Fish Camp

Download or read book Tales from a Florida Fish Camp written by Jack Montrose and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-17 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join Jack Montrose, a fish camp regular since 1965, as he reminisces about the good old days fishing on the St. Johns River. Tales from a Florida Fish Camp captures the atmosphere and humor of fish camps, where fishermen gathered to tell tall tales of their fishing exploits, play practical jokes, and relax over a cold beer. Here you'll find tales of more than just fish (though the ones caught were THIS BIG). You'll encounter snakes, gators, cats (ordinary house ones as well as a panther), turtles, manatees, a skunk, and lots and lots of bugs, as well as a few celebrities—including a baseball manager, a general, and an astronaut. The stars are more often than not the boats, and if the tale's about an airboat, well, don't expect the teller to have dry shoes. You're in for huge belly laughs as you read about fish camp contests, tourists, Yankees, and Flash, the hard-drinking, snake-chasing, spitz/bull-dog mix who was everyones best friend. Practical jokes abound at fish camps: the author even got to be sheriff for a day when one of his buddies played a joke on him and some unwitting tourists.
