Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blind Brother: A Story of the Pennsylvania Coal Mines Up in the Lackawanna region a strike had been in progress for nearly two weeks. Efforts had been made by the strikers to persuade the miners down the valley to join them, but at first without success. Then a committee of one hundred came down to appeal and to intimidate. In squads of ten or more they visited the mines in the region, and, in the course of their journeyings, had come to the Dryden Slope. They had induced the miners to go out at all the workings they had thus far entered, and were no less successful here. It required persuasion, sometimes threats, sometimes, indeed, even blows, for the miners in Dryden Slope had no cause of complaint against their employers; they earned good wages, and were content. In 1768, it is said, this Coal was first used by an ingenias blacksmith, nam ed Obadiah Gore, is settler from Connecticut; and having fully succeeded in applying it to his business. It eoon became the only fuel employed by the blacksmiths in the Valley. It was first used in a grate by Judge Fall, of Wilkesbarre, in the year 1808, who, to use his words, conceived the idea that, if a body of this Coal were ignited, and confined together, it would burn as a fuel; and to try the experiment, he had a grate erected for the purpose, about eight inches in depth, and twenty-two inches long, and the Coal. Book A Legacy of Coal

Download or read book A Legacy of Coal written by Margaret M. Mulrooney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Legacy of Coal: The Coal Company Towns of Southwestern Pennsylvania Recognizing that a true portrait of these communities would best be revealed by example, detailed monographs on three individual coal towns were also incorporated into this volume. The three towns-star Junction, Windber and Colver-were chosen to represent the South western Pennsylvania coal company town because each possessed the five major traits (see figure 1 However, each town also had certain unique features of its own. For this reason, they should be seen as representatives of a broad trend, and not as the best or most exemplary of the region's coal towns. The primary goal of this project was to formally establish these characteristics through a literature search, interviews with local residents and wind shield surveys of actual towns. While some of these characteristics may be found in other forms of settlement, the occurrence of all five together is typical of Southwestern Pennsylvania coal company towns. Through the course of this investigation several other physical traits were recognized. These include: a grid or linear plan; a company store; open sewer systems; narrow, deep housing lots; individual gardens; unpaved streets; and electric light. In addition to these striking physical similarities, this study found that these towns have strong social, political, economic, ethnic and cultural parallels, suggesting that company towns have a uniformity that transcends mere planning and architecture. Star Junction is the oldest of the three towns. Located in Fayette County, Star Junction's economic livelihood depended upon the produc tion of coke, a metallurgical fuel derived from raw coal. The town and its coke works were built in 1893 by the Washington Coal and Coke Company and reflected housing problems that were peculiar to the coke industry. Windber was founded in 1897 by the berwind-white Coal Mining Company along the northern border of Somerset County. Intended to serve as a regional head-quarters for the company's western mining operations, Windber consists of an independent urban center surrounded by eleven dependent mining settlements. As the largest and most complex of the three company towns, Windber reveals the special considerations required by a corporate center. Colver, on the other hand, is a small, self-contained community. Built by the Ebensburg Coal Company in 1911, Colver developed almost two decades after Star Junction and Windber and, therefore, incorpor ates more of the industrial housing reforms promoted during the Progressive Era than its older counterparts. Download or read book Effect of Incorporated Coal Companies Upon the Anthracite Coal Trade of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by George Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Incorporated Coal Companies Upon the Anthracite Coal Trade of Pennsylvania Thus far the Trade has not been conducted in a manner profitable to those engaged m it, or satisfactory to consumers and the public. The price of Coal has been variable and subject to sudden changes and the supply has been precarious and unequal - great scarcity and ruinous abundance alternating with each other. Neither the price nor the quantity of Coal sent to market have been regulated by the fair cost of producing the article, or the wants of consumers. An extraneous, independent and separate influence appears to have con trolled both supply and price. At one time the Coal owner may be seen soliciting purchasers to buy at a rate 30 to 40 per cent. Be low actual cost. This occasions ruin to many individuals, followed by a relinquishment of the business. The consequence is a short Supply the following year, when consumers pay 30 to 40 per cent. Too high. All are thereby injured - and the Coal T1ade, the re sources, and the advancement of the country proportion'ably embar rassed and impeded.
