Book excerpt: RIVAL CAESARS - A Romance of Ambition, Love and War. Being the tale of a Vice-President, a Major-General and three brilliant and beautiful women. For the initiated "a recruiting tool for revolutionary dreams." By Desmond Dilg The author says in an introductory note; "From original documents preserved from utter destruction in a very remarkable manner this book has been written. The discovery of these documents (withered and tattered and mouldy with age and damp) is in itself a strange and tragic story. Someday it shall be related." This mysterious document, it is elsewhere stated, makes the revelation that Theodosia Alston, Aaron Burr's daughter, did not perish by shipwreck, as is generally supposed, but lived many years afterwards in Cuba. There has of recent years been new documentary evidence brought to light from Spanish sources touching on the alleged conspiracy for which Burr was tried at Richmond, but the ancient papers which this Chicago romanticist mentions are, of course, imaginary. With their aid, however, he has managed to weave an interesting, though necessarily fanciful, story, in which Burr and Hamilton are the principal characters, the latter showing to the best advantage. The story begins in the colonial days, when Burr and Hamilton were both young men in New York and continue until after the fatal duel. It is supposed that both the "Rival Caesars" were members of a secret organization known as "The Iron Cross," and in this way, as well as in some other respects, the story is given suggestion of the weird and occult.

Book excerpt: Rival Caesars is the little known second book by Arthur Desmond (writing under the pseudonym Desmond Dilg), aka Ragnar Redbeard, author of one of the most infamous and controversial books of all time, "Might is Right: The Survival of the Fittest." Peppered with Desmond's fascinating, unique, and thought-provoking philosophy, Rival Caesars is a wildly entertaining "alternative history" account of the famed rivalry between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr that ended in the bloody, fatal duel. Out-of-print for over a century, editor Benjamin Garland has rescued this politically incorrect book from obscurity. Sure to be appreciated by fans of "Might is Right" and casual fiction readers alike, "Rival Caesars" is a piece of history now readily available to all.

Book excerpt: Is it possible that the famous duel between Hamilton and Burr was part of a judgment against the two by a secret society they formed decades prior to create an American shadow government? This story, telling of the lives of two great rivals, lies somewhere between a Robert E. Howard pastiche and a Yankee version of Thomas Dixon Jr. Rival Caesars is a fantasy Revolutionary War tale by the man who penned the infamous philippic titled Might is Right. Arthur Desmond, who wrote as Ragnar Redbeard, here uses the nom de guerre Desmond Dilg. Might is Right ends thus: "P.S. Book II will be issued when circumstances demand it." The 1903 novel Rival Caesars is that book. Preceding his time as one of the earliest proponents of an American Nietzscheanism, Desmond was an Antipodean radical, fighting in the streets alongside anarcho-communists and trade unionists. He stood for election as a labor candidate and promoted Georgism to both Māori and Europeans in New Zealand and Australia. Fleeing the law, he settled in America among the Chicago bohemian scene, and his radicalism turned from collective rights to individualist might. While Might is Right was intended as an awakening call for "mighty men of valor," Rival Caesars is the plan of action, plotted out under the guise of a historical romance. This novel is nothing short of a rallying cry to an American Caesar to claim their share of pelf, prominence, and prestige in the vein of Napoleon or Cecil Rhodes. Incredibly rare for nearly a century, here, finally, is an accessible and beautifully designed paperback edition, with an authoritative introductory essay by Darrell W. Conder. While it will never be as infamous as its predecessor, Rival Caesars is the ultimate book by the man known as Ragnar Redbeard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays by Dora Marsden (1882 - 1960) from her journal "The Egoist." Introduction, annotations, glossary and index by Trevor Blake, author of "Dora Marsden Bibliography." Read the Gospel of Power... "What a blight it is on life, to be sure, that honest speech is almost non-existent. Lo and behold, all are alike: the secret sin against the spirit of peace is universal, and can be proclaimed from the housetops. The 'poor' man is the one who lacks the power to get what he wants. If he had had the 'might, ' the 'competence' to cover the wide expanse of these 'rights, ' he would not be in the position of a beggar asking for the favour of a job from a master: he would have set about being his own master: the one thing which to this day the ordinary wage earner steadily refuses to be. 'Reformers' have tried to get a comprehensive view of the 'world's work'-which does not exist save in their own imagination-and they have come to neglect and hold lightly work viewed from its only real aspect-the personal satisfying of needs and wants as they rise up spontaneously from each varying individual. Social rebels will get no way until they acquiesce willingly in men and women being what they are: accept their oddities and wayward differences and then make the best and most of them to serve their individual ends."

Book excerpt: The enemy were overpowered and took to flight. The Romans pursued as far as their strength enabled them to run' Between 58 and 50 BC Julius Caesar conquered most of the area now covered by France, Belgium and Switzerland, and invaded Britain twice, and The Conquest of Gaul is his record of these campaigns. Caesar’s narrative offers insights into his military strategy and paints a fascinating picture of his encounters with the inhabitants of Gaul and Britain, as well as lively portraits of the rebel leader Vercingetorix and other Gallic chieftains. The Conquest of Gaulcan also be read as a piece of political propaganda, as Caesar sets down his version of events for the Roman public, knowing he faces civil war on his return to Rome. Revised and updated by Jane Gardner, S. A. Handford’s translation brings Caesar’s lucid and exciting account to life for modern readers. This volume includes a glossary of persons and places, maps, appendices and suggestions for further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her new book about the men who were instrumental in establishing the Rome of the Emperors, Colleen McCullough tells the story of a famous love affair and a man whose sheer ability could lead to only one end -- assassination. As The October Horse begins, Gaius Julius Caesar is at the height of his stupendous career. When he becomes embroiled in a civil war between Egypt's King Ptolemy and Queen Cleopatra, he finds himself torn between the fascinations of a remarkable woman and his duty as a Roman. Though he must leave Cleopatra, she remains a force in his life as a lover and as the mother of his only son, who can never inherit Caesar's Roman mantle, and therefore cannot solve his father's greatest dilemma -- who will be Caesar's Roman heir? A hero to all of Rome except to those among his colleagues who see his dictatorial powers as threats to the democratic system they prize so highly, Caesar is determined not to be worshiped as a god or crowned king, but his unique situation conspires to make it seem otherwise. Swearing to bring him down, Caesar's enemies masquerade as friends and loyal supporters while they plot to destroy him. Among them are his cousin and Master of the Horse, Mark Antony, feral and avaricious, priapic and impulsive; Gaius Trebonius, the nobody, who owes him everything; Gaius Cassius, eaten by jealousy; and the two Brutuses, his cousin Decimus, and Marcus, the son of his mistress Servilia, sad victim of his mother and of his uncle Cato, whose daughter he marries. All are in Caesar's debt, all have been raised to high positions, all are outraged by Caesar's autocracy. Caesar must die, they decide, for only when he is dead will Rome return to her old ways, her old republican self. With her extraordinary knowledge of Roman history, Colleen McCullough brings Caesar to life as no one has ever done before and surrounds him with an enormous and vivid cast of historical characters, characters like Cleopatra who call to us from beyond the centuries, for McCullough's genius is to make them live again without losing any of the grandeur that was Rome. Packed with battles on land and sea, with intrigue, love affairs, and murders, the novel moves with amazing speed toward the assassination itself, and then into the ever more complex and dangerous consequences of that act, in which the very fate of Rome is at stake. The October Horse is about one of the world's pivotal eras, relating as it does events that have continued to echo even into our own times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stunning articles about the labor movement, unpublished poetry, and historic Maori translations. Caricature depictions accompanied by writings which caused its author to be accused of plagiarism. In June 1890 Arthur Desmond got his article "Christ as a Social Reformer," published in "Zealandia," a Dunedin magazine. The article quickly became popular and in October he arranged for it to be printed as a pamphlet by Mr. Arthur Cleave, of Vulcan lane. Presented here for the first time since then is Arthur Desmond's accused article followed by Mr. Van Deusen's article "Ecclesiastical Christianity versus Jesus." "Writings in Red" is a collection of Desmond's writings, poetry, and correspondence. All his published works in Zealandia. His Union and strike articles. Critiques and controversy between the years 1889-1891. "The author treats the subject in a style that is new to many in this city. He looks upon Christ as a great Hebrew Reformer, who was murdered because he upheld and defended the cause of the poor. The Tribune recommends this pamphlet to its readers." -The Tribune From the Contents: The King That Is To Come The Starving Poor Of Old England Shearing The Shareholders Political Manifesto Of United Labour Who Pays For All? New Zealander Arthur Desmond, (1859-1929) was a poet, author, unionist, and agitator. He was an unconventional and radical political activist who fought hard for the worker's rights. Book Might Is Right Or Survival of the Fittest

Download or read book Might Is Right Or Survival of the Fittest written by Ragnar Redbeard and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2014-07-12 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is unabridged, original text of this infamous book. Might Is Right, or The Survival of the Fittest, is a book by pseudonymous author Ragnar Redbeard. First published in 1890, it heavily advocates social Darwinism, amoralism, and psychological hedonism. In Might is Right, Redbeard rejects conventional ideas of human and natural rights and argues that only strength or physical might can establish moral right (la Callicles). Libertarian historian James J. Martin called it "surely one of the most incendiary works ever to be published anywhere." Leo Tolstoy discussed the philosophy of Might Is Right in his 1897 essay What Is Art?: "The substance of this book, as it is expressed in the editor's preface, is that to measure "right" by the false philosophy of the Hebrew prophets and "weepful" Messiahs is madness. Right is not the offspring of doctrine, but of power. All laws, commandments, or doctrines as to not doing to another what you do not wish done to you, have no inherent authority whatever, but receive it only from the club, the gallows, and the sword. A man truly free is under no obligation to obey any injunction, human or divine. Obedience is the sign of the degenerate. Disobedience is the stamp of the hero. Men should not be bound by moral rules invented by their foes. The whole world is a slippery battlefield. Ideal justice demands that the vanquished should be exploited, emasculated, and scorned. The free and brave may seize the world. And, therefore, there should be eternal war for life, for land, for love, for women, for power, and for gold. The earth and its treasures is "booty for the bold." The author has evidently by himself, independently of Nietzsche, come to the same conclusions which are professed by the new artists."
