Download or read book The Politics of Reproductive Ritual written by Jeffery M. Paige and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A welcome addition. They argue that rituals of reproduction in preindustrial societies are essentially political. In these societies, they say, men need to control the reproductive power of women in order to establish political power; where there is no law or central government, ritual is used as a way of gaining control. The type of ritual will vary, they conclude, according to the economic base of the society. . . .for those whoa re interested in the subject, this book is indispensable. Its thesis is challenging and the documentation is excellent. Paige and Paige have mad ean essential contribution to a long debate, and their theory is sure to stir new and lively controversy." --Science Digest This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book What Kinship Is And Is Not

Download or read book What Kinship Is And Is Not written by Marshall Sahlins and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pithy two-part essay, Marshall Sahlins reinvigorates the debates on what constitutes kinship, building on some of the best scholarship in the field to produce an original outlook on the deepest bond humans can have. Covering thinkers from Aristotle and Lévy- Bruhl to Émile Durkheim and David Schneider, and communities from the Maori and the English to the Korowai of New Guinea, he draws on a breadth of theory and a range of ethnographic examples to form an acute definition of kinship, what he calls the “mutuality of being.” Kinfolk are persons who are parts of one another to the extent that what happens to one is felt by the other. Meaningfully and emotionally, relatives live each other’s lives and die each other’s deaths. In the second part of his essay, Sahlins shows that mutuality of being is a symbolic notion of belonging, not a biological connection by “blood.” Quite apart from relations of birth, people may become kin in ways ranging from sharing the same name or the same food to helping each other survive the perils of the high seas. In a groundbreaking argument, he demonstrates that even where kinship is reckoned from births, it is because the wider kindred or the clan ancestors are already involved in procreation, so that the notion of birth is meaningfully dependent on kinship rather than kinship on birth. By formulating this reversal, Sahlins identifies what kinship truly is: not nature, but culture.

Download or read book An Introduction to Malawi written by Cecilia Lawrence and published by Intercontinental Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides basic facts about Malawi. It is intended to serve as a brief introduction to this southeast African country and enable some people, who know nothing or very little about Malawi, to learn important facts which can help them learn more about the people and the history of one of the most fascinating countries on the African continent. Who are the people of Malawi? What are their ethnic identities? What is the country's history? How is the land? What are some of its prominent features? How is life in Malawi? What are some of the cultural aspects which give the country its own identity? Is there a national culture or simply cultures of different ethnic groups? What are some of the towns and cities of this predominantly agricultural country and one of the poorest in Africa? What is the country's future in a region with richer and more powerful neighbours? Is federation with them possible and a solution to the country's economic problems? Those are some of the questions I have attempted to answer in this book.
