Book excerpt: Fire safety regulations in many countries require Fire Risk Assessment to be carried out for buildings such as workplaces and houses in multiple occupation. This duty is imposed on a "Responsible Person" and also on any other persons having control of buildings in compliance with the requirements specified in the regulations. Although regulations only require a qualitative assessment of fire risk, a quantitative assessment is an essential first step for performing cost-benefit analysis of alternative fire strategies to comply with the regulations and selecting the most cost-effective strategy. To facilitate this assessment, various qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative techniques of fire risk assessment, already developed, are critically reviewed in this book and some improvements are suggested. This book is intended to be an expanded version of Part 7: Probabilistic risk assessment, 2003, a Published Document (PD) to British Standard BS 7974: 2001 on the Application of Fire Safety Engineering Principles to the Design of Buildings. Ganapathy Ramachandran and David Charters were co-authors of PD 7974 Part 7. Quantitative Risk Assessment in Fire Safety is essential reading for consultants, academics, fire safety engineers, fire officers, building control officers and students in fire safety engineering. It also provides useful tools for fire protection economists and risk management professionals, including those involved in fire insurance underwriting.

Collectively, this legislation is known as “risk regulation” because it addresses the risk of harm that technology creates for individuals and the environment. In the last two decades, this legislation has come under increasing attack by critics who employ utilitarian philosophy and cost-benefit analysis. The defenders of this body of risk regulation, by contrast, have lacked a similar unifying theory. In this book, the authors propose that the American tradition of philosophical pragmatism fills this vacuum. They argue that pragmatism offers a better method for conceiving of and implementing risk regulation than the economic paradigm favored by its critics. While pragmatism offers a methodology in support of risk regulation as it was originally conceived, it also offers a perspective from which this legislation can be held up to critical appraisal. The authors employ pragmatism to support risk regulation, but pragmatism also leads them to agree with some of the criticisms against it, and even to level new criticisms of their own. In the end, the authors reject the picture—painted by risk regulation’s critics—of widely excessive and irrational regulation, but the pragmatic perspective also leads them to propose a number of recommendations for useful reforms to risk regulation.

However,although plain X-ray examination was recognized as an insensitive way to detect osteoporosis, hypodense bone was already considered as the reflection of the disease. Over the past 20 years, con siderable progress has been accomplished. In terms of prevalence, incidence, risk factors, and the burden of osteoporosis and low-energy fracture, we can appreciate the magnitude of the problem and its impact on quality oflife. Weare wellaware that vertebral fracture, which can be acutely associated with a low clinical expression, leads to significant long-term impairments. The costs for the individual and for the health budget, Le. society,are estimated better. Wenow have a clear definition of the disease, such as low bone mass and architectural defects, resulting in increased fragility. For the former part of the definition, the clinician can use accurate and pre cise tools allowing them to distinguish how their patient's bone mineral content differs from that of a young healthy population in which fracture occurs very rarely. For the second series of fragility determinants, i. e. structure, methods are in rapid progress and will provide information to clinicians on these variables in the near future. Basicand clinical research have allowed major improvements in the understand ing of the pathophysiology of the disease. Newgenes implicated in lowand/or high bone mass have been characterized.

Sagner, PhD Published by Fasttrack Textbooks Why do we need another book on management and organizational behavior? There are many good texts on these topics that are available for classroom use, but an instructor must explain and update most of the content. Here are eight reasons that Fasttrack Management and Organizational Behavior is different from other textbooks. 1.The author. Nearly all books that deal with management are written by academics. The few exceptions deal with the mechanics of personnel management such as hiring practices or how to create a successful management-by-objectives program. While Dr. Sagner does teach MBA students, much of his career was as a bank vice-president (at the First National Bank of Chicago, now JPMorgan Chase). What managers do each day varies significantly from what most textbooks say they do. 2.The writing. Much of what you'll find in other books is padding. In some texts you'll find endless discussions, numerous references to practices in companies so obscure that no one has ever heard of them, detours into topics not specifically related to management and organization behavior, and other material that adds words but not much real content. Students today are busy and do not have the time or the focus to wade throughout 150,000 words. This book (and others planned for this series) is about 75,000 comprised mostly one, two or three syllable words, roughly half of the usual length. 3.The timeliness of coverage. This book addresses current topics (Obamacare, the effect of the recession on management, global differences in management style, the increasing relevance of control in managing organizations, disappearing human resources departments, contingent workers, interpersonal dynamics and managing in a time of change). Some of these issues did not even exist until recently, and many are not mentioned in other management texts. 4.The integration of cases with the text. The ten cases written to be used in conjunction with this text address such varied management concerns as change management, controlling, decision-making, directing, group dynamics, individual motivation, leadership, individual decision-making, personnel/human resources and planning. Instructors will have access to suggested solutions through our website. In addition, some short cases are included within the text material. 5.The breath of business coverage. Management does not occur in a vacuum. The work of the manager touches every business discipline, and to ignore these relationships is simply not realistic. As appropriate, reference is made to accounting, finance, marketing, law and manufacturing, all of which affect the success or failure of the organization. 6.The use of "helps" to support the student. Every chapter begins with a lead-in of major topics to be covered. Within the chapter, icons tell the reader whether the content level is basic or advanced, and the chapters end with important issues that should be addressed to bring modern management and organizational behavior concepts to an organization as well as review and discussion questions. 7.Instructor support.
