Book Risk Behaviour and Hiv Aids Among Ethiopian University Students

Download or read book Risk Behaviour and Hiv Aids Among Ethiopian University Students written by Zerihun Gebre Haile and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk behaviors are those behaviors that can have adverse effects on the well-being of the students and might prevent them from future successes both in their studies and lives. Because they include behaviors that have negative effects; like risk sexual behaviors, alcohol, drugs, etc., which can significantly impact their lives and the lives of their friends. The assessment on some of the universities in Ethiopia shows that the students are in many behaviors of concern to the educators, family, government, religious organizations, a health and to the public as the future of the country depends on them and on the way we treat them. The risk-behaviors observed also has link to a host of other health compromising behaviors such as engagement in risk sexual behaviors which exposes them to the infection of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV. Besides, the source of information and knowledge in the university to bring behavioral change is not significant. It is shown that even the most effective strategies are insufficient in preventing the risk behaviors and the transmissions of the HIV and AIDS.

Book An Examination of HIV risk Behaviors Among University Students in Trinidad Testing the Information motivation behavioral Skills Model

Download or read book An Examination of HIV risk Behaviors Among University Students in Trinidad Testing the Information motivation behavioral Skills Model written by Rhonda M. Dalrymple and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study utilized the Information Motivation Behavioral Skills (IMB) model (Fisher & Fisher, 1992) as a framework to investigate HIV risk behaviors among a sample of university students in Trinidad. The Caribbean ranks second in the world in terms of HIV rates, and although a relatively small island, the rates of HIV infection in Trinidad are of grave proportions. This research examined their existing level of HIV/AIDS knowledge, their motivation to practice safer sex, and their perceived behavioral skills at engaging in HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors. Further, this study also sought to test the fit of the IMB model to the data for this sample of Trinidadian university students. A sample of 90 sexually active participants were selected for purposes of this study and were recruited from various classes at the University of the West Indies located in Trinidad. The findings revealed that the IMB model did fit the data for this sample. However, the information variable was found to not be related to any of the model variables. Motivation on the other hand was found to be the strongest predictor of some of the preventive behaviors. Cultural examinations revealed that there were moderately high levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, low condom use and HIV testing, and somewhat positive attitudes toward preventive acts among the participants. Exploratory analyses also revealed significant gender differences. The implications of this study for its contribution to the continued effort to understand the reasons behind the growing prevalence of HIV/AIDS are also discussed.

Book Knowledge about HIV AIDS Risk Reduction Behaviors and Readiness to VCT

Download or read book Knowledge about HIV AIDS Risk Reduction Behaviors and Readiness to VCT written by Kabtamu Ayele and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has created an enormous challenge worldwide. HIV and its effect, the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), are rampant worldwide problems with broad social, cultural and economical implications. The present study, therefore, has investigated College students' knowledge about HIV/AIDS, Risk Reduction Behaviors and Readiness to undergo Voluntary Counseling and Testing for HIV ( VCT ). The result indicated that knowledge about HIV/AIDS did not predict the students' Readiness to access VCT services. However, knowledge about HIV/AIDS together with Risk Reduction Behaviors was found to contribute for the students' Readiness to access VCT. With this regard, it was known that HIV/AIDS prevention is not mainly a problem of transmitting knowledge but rather one of changing attributes and overt behaviors. Even when people have good understanding and awareness of the virus, they are not changing their behavior, as there are so many contributing factors that lead people to behave in a certain way or which prevents them from changing their behavior.

This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Sub-Saharan Africa continues to claim the lion s share of the world s HIV burden, it is crucial to shed some light on the types of sexual behaviors and the underlying factors influencing these behaviors in relation to HIV/AIDS in this particular part of the world. Even though the relationship between sexual behaviors and HIV/AIDS has garnered a lot of attention and many researches have been conducted in the area, comprehensive knowledge is still inadequate in Sub-Saharan countries partially explaining the staggering incidence rate despite enormous investment focused on prevention. Given the paramount economic and social impact of HIV in Africa as a result of its drastic effect on the young and productive part of the society, studies specifically targeting this age group can unravel a wealth of information essential for intervention. This book closely examines perception of risk of HIV/AIDS and intention to adopt preventive behaviors among students in Dire Dawa University in Ethiopia.

Book Bleak Prospects

Download or read book Bleak Prospects written by Getnet Tadele and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Présentation de l'éditeur : "The study of sexuality in Ethiopia has until now remained largely the domain of medical scientists, public health professionals and epidemiologists; barely touched upon by sociologists, anthropologists and other social scientists. To the author's knowledge, no study has been carried out about the perceptions of different sexual practices in Ethiopia. This book is therefore a pioneering work that explores how young people in the Ethiopian town of Dessie express their sexuality and are experiencing HIV/AIDS in their daily lives. It also considers how poverty and other related structural factors are linked to HIV/AIDS infection and other processes affecting the sexuality of young people, how young people and key informants receive, interpret and evaluate ongoing interventions, and what can be done to reduce infection rates. The book provides insights into the role and interrelationship of the underlying structural, social and cultural factors in the context of HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention."
