Download or read book Earth Surface Processes written by Philip A. Allen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth Surface Processes is an introductory text for those studying the dynamics of fluid and sediment transport in the environments, in the context of both present-day patterns as well as the environmental changes decipherable in the geological record. The book is divided into two parts. The first deals with the global-scale aspects of the earth's surface system. The second part focuses on the physical underpinnings for fluid and sediment transport in a number of settings, found at the earth's surface and in its oceans. Earth Surface Processes fits into the literature of the broad holistic discipline of 'Earth System Science.' The author illustrates the physical principles of earth's surface processes and explains the relevant theories by quantitative practical exercises. The pioneering textbook on the "new sedimentology" One of the first textbooks to adopt the Earth Systems approach to geology, developed at Penn State and Stanford Should reinvigorate more traditional courses in physical sedimentology and dynamical sedimentology Successfully marries the innovative holistic approach to Earth Systems with the traditional reductionist approach to sedimentary processes Explains both the global-scale Earth Surface System and the fluid dynamics and sedimentary transport processes that underlie this Quantitative approach is reinforced with worked examples and solutions Richly illustrated with original diagrams and a colour plate section

Download or read book Tensile Fracturing in Rocks written by Dov Bahat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-31 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Tensile Fracturing in Rocks’ presents field observations on fracturing of sedim- tary rocks and granite outcrops from various provinces in three continents. It also combines results of recent experiments conducted at different laboratories around the world with current theories on fracturing. In treating faults, this book limits itself to faults that are associated with joint sets produced by definable causes and occasi- ally to cases where interaction between the two types of fracture – faults and joints – is not clear. The book’s subject matter is divided over six chapters, which are briefly described below. Chapter 1 summarizes current key concepts in fracture physics. It starts with a pr- entation of the elastic theory of fracture, and concentrates on the results of linear el- tic fracture mechanics. The chapter touches also upon other fracture properties, e.g., crack nucleation, dynamic fracturing and slow fracturing processes. Nucleation is - dressed by statistical mechanics methods incorporating modern approaches of th- mal and fiber bundle processes. The analyses of dynamic fracturing and slow fract- ing focus on the differences, as compared to the linear elastic approach. The cont- versy in interpreting experimental dynamic results is highlighted, as are the surface morphology patterns that emerge in fracturing and the non-Griffith crack extension criterion in very slow fracturing processes.

The authors' beautiful photography, extended captions and accessible text make interpreting and understanding geological structures simple, whether you're an amateur enthusiast keen to learn or a more experienced geologist. The three main rock groups - igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary - and their related structures are each covered in detail, followed by sections focusing on folds and folding, faults and faulting, and unconformities. Structures and related landforms are illustrated in more than 200 detailed colour photographs and their helpful captions assist with identification in the field. Each geological account includes an indication of the structure's formation and provides useful information on how to identify and understand its distinguishing features.
