Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh argument for rioting and looting as our most powerful tools for dismantling white supremacy. Looting -- a crowd of people publicly, openly, and directly seizing goods -- is one of the more extreme actions that can take place in the midst of social unrest. Even self-identified radicals distance themselves from looters, fearing that violent tactics reflect badly on the broader movement. But Vicky Osterweil argues that stealing goods and destroying property are direct, pragmatic strategies of wealth redistribution and improving life for the working class -- not to mention the brazen messages these methods send to the police and the state. All our beliefs about the innate righteousness of property and ownership, Osterweil explains, are built on the history of anti-Black, anti-Indigenous oppression. From slave revolts to labor strikes to the modern-day movements for climate change, Black lives, and police abolition, Osterweil makes a convincing case for rioting and looting as weapons that bludgeon the status quo while uplifting the poor and marginalized. In Defense of Looting is a history of violent protest sparking social change, a compelling reframing of revolutionary activism, and a practical vision for a dramatically restructured society.

Book excerpt: " . . . a sweeping, analytical synethsis of collective violence from the colonial experience to the present." —American Studies "Gilje has written 'the book' on rioting throughout American history." —The Historian ". . . a thorough, illuminating, and at times harrowing account of man's inhumanity to man." —William and Mary Quarterly " . . . fulfills its title's promise as an encyclopedic study . . . an impressive accomplishment and required reading for anyone interested in America's contentious past." —Journal of the Early Republic "Gilje has written a thought-provoking survey of the social context of American riots and popular disorders from the Colonial period to the late 20th century. . . . a must read for anyone interested in riots." —Choice In this wide-ranging survey of rioting in America, Paul A. Gilje argues that we cannot fully comprehend the history of the United States without an understanding of the impact of rioting. Exploring the rationale of the American mob brings to light the grievances that motivate its behavior and the historical circumstances that drive the choices it makes. Gilje's unusual lens makes for an eye-opening view of the American people and their history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rioting and looting are evolutionary terms and actions whose ancestor can be traced to biblical origins. They are never the primary action but almost and always prompted by some primary factor. They are the prodigy of the biblical "spoil" and "plunder" that is often the preferred method of seizure, restitution, or economic gains that God instructed the Israelite to assert their rights to. America, the great nation that it purports to be is perhaps the greatest looter that has chartered a course that is contrary to God's will and in direct contradiction to her own creed "that all men are created equal." This trajectory has a stark similarity to the biblical account as recorded in the book of Exodus where the Israelite, for no other reason than their increased population growth, were subjected to cruel and unusual punishment of slavery at the direction of the Pharaoh and at the hands of Egypt's harsh taskmasters. This injustice spanned over a period of four hundred and thirty years before God intervened and exacted his divine retributive justice upon the "hardened hearts" of the Egyptian Pharaoh. The Israelite's, at the direction of God, "plundered" the Egyptians and were given restitution, compensation, and reparation for the atrocities inflicted upon them. America is approaching four hundred and four years since the year 1619, and God has revealed that his divine retributive justice will be exacted upon America. Black people and people of color, after the plagues imposed upon America, will be granted restitution, compensation, and reparation for the cruel and unjust atrocities inflicted upon them. To avert this impending doom, White America must sit down at the table of brotherhood with its citizens of color and acknowledge and dismantle her "white privileges" with the commitment to restore and compensate Black America for the injustices inflicted upon them.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Social Movements

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Social Movements written by Donatella Della Porta and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook presents a most updated and comprehensive exploration of social movement research. It not only maps, but also expands the field of social movement studies, taking stock of recent developments in cognate areas of studies, within and beyond sociology and political science. While structured around traditional social movement concepts, each section combines the mapping of the state of the art with attempts to broaden our knowledge of social movements beyond classic theoretical agendas, and to identify the contribution that social movement studies can give to other fields of knowledge.

Book The Case for Reclamation

Download or read book The Case for Reclamation written by Sarah Elizabeth Bosworth and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looting and rioting are two contentious elements of protest that have appeared throughout movements for racial justice in the United States. These two strategies have often been dismissed by both onlookers and movement organizers as unlawful, violent forms of protest that fail to accomplish the goals of the movements they occur in. Demystifying the processes of racialization and criminalization that have occurred to the terms "loot" and "riot" through an analysis of the Tulsa Riot of 1921 and the Watts Riots of 1965, I argue that looting and rioting are radical strategies with revolutionary potential when employed by Black bodies in movements for racial justice. In redefining the terms "loot" and "riot," this thesis seeks to redefine such tactics as forms of revolutionary protest because they strike at the heart of the racist and oppressive economic and civil structures that make up the legal formation of the United States.

Book excerpt: While it may certainly feel a little dramatic, the truth is a riot or angry mob can be equally as dangerous as any other kind of disaster, such as a natural disaster or EMP attack. In fact, thousands of people are tragically killed each year due to riots all over the world. Riots can unpredictably and violently erupt for a number of reasons, including for religious, racial, economic, social, and political reasons. If you ever find yourself in the middle of a riot, you'll be glad to know that even though your life is in immediate danger, there are basic measures you can take to protect yourself from being harmed. What those measures are is exactly what we are going to cover in this guide. But first of all, what is a riot? A riot is simply any situation where a group of people will act in an uncontrolled and violent manner, usually in an urban environment. Recent events from all over the world have clearly proven to us that not only are riots real, they are also incredibly dangerous and life threatening. A riot is actually one of the most likely survival situations that you are ever likely to face. But let me ask you something, do you know what to do and what not to do when you find yourself in the middle of one? Do you know how to survive a riot? Regardless of what your personal views or political opinions are, something that we should all be able to agree upon is that both across the world and in the United States, tensions are rising. The result is that the threat of civil unrest is rising to. For example, in the United States, we don't need to look any further than the riots that happened in Baltimore and Ferguson. Globally, we don't need to look any farther than the Ukraine. It is these events and others like them that prove to us that riots are real and violent, and that no one is immune to them. In this book, we are going to discuss how you can prepare for and escape riots in detail. The specific steps that we are going to analyze include: -Step #1: Why Riots Are A Serious Threat -Step #2: How To Prepare For A Riot -Step #3: Practicing Situational Awareness -Step #4: Surviving The First Few Minutes Of The Riot -Step #5: Escaping The Riot -Step #6: Final Tips By the end of this guide, you will be much better prepared for riots and you will know how you can quickly and safely escape them without harm.

Book A Black Man s Guide to Rioting and Looting

Download or read book A Black Man s Guide to Rioting and Looting written by Sick Puppies and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is a white male, which makes him uniquely qualified to write about this subject. It is his attempt to take a radical comical approach to what has become a very serious social problem, not only in the United States but abroad. Nothing in this guide should be taken seriously. It is written solely for the comedic insight and to get people thinking about the problem. There are no viable solutions provided to this problem within the guide. Hopefully the guide will spur thoughtful approaches to the problem and get to the root causes of rioting and looting. The Author would much rather see big businesses and small businesses alike setting up shop in inner cities and training tomorrow's youth for the challenges of the future. Pay them a livable wage and give them healthcare so that they can adequately support their families and get a piece of the American dream that everyone longs for. The hopes and aspirations of our inner city youth are directly tied to their fears, frustrations and anger associated with a lack of adequate government response coupled with not enough solid role models to look up to. I fully support protesting peacefully as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did many years ago. This is the only viable solution to problems and provides an environment conducive to solving inner city problems and not creating more problems. I hope this guide has you thinking about ways that you can support the inner city and I encourage you to reach out to government and civic leaders who can affect the very necessary changes that need to take place in these neighborhoods. Violence and rioting and looting of businesses is not the solution to the problem. However, far too many people take advantage of an idea or a news story to create a sense of fear and outrage amongst groups of people. This creates an atmosphere for rioting and looting events to take place. It is my sincerest hope that this guide has made you consider the effects and after effects of this very serious social problem. This guide is really just political satire and is designed to get people talking. I personally seek peace, not war.
