Download or read book Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerisation and Related Chemistry written by Ezat Khosravi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the last ASI in Turkey in Sept. 1995, the olefin metathesis has made remarkable strong developments with an incredible speed in various directions. New catalyst systems have been developed which have resulted in the synthesis of novel materials. Other fascinating developments have been the new catalysts for stereoselective metathesis and catalysts with considerable functional group tolerance. These new catalysts in addition to Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerisation (ROMP) and Acyclic Diene Metathesis (ADMET) are now powerful tools for Ring Closing Metathesis (RCM) and have found many applications in the synthesis of natural products. A lot of information has been established about all aspects of the olefin metathesis and there is a vast literature concerning the process, covering the initiators, mechanistic features and applications of this reaction in organic and polymer synthesis. The NATO ASI on rd th ROMP and Related Chemistry took place in Polanica-Zdroj, Poland during 3 to 15 Sept. 2000, to highlight the developments in this area and to discuss the prospects and visions for the year 2000 and beyond. The aims of the ASI were: to provide a platform for dissemination of knowledge; to promote communication between people who have a serious interest in this field of chemistry; to help establishing international scientific contacts and to provide an opportunity for the scientists with an appropriate scientific background to learn of recent developments in this field of science. There were 15 lecturers and 67 participants in this NATO ASI.

Book Improving Control and Functionality of Photoredox mediated Metal free Ring opening Metathesis Polymerization

Download or read book Improving Control and Functionality of Photoredox mediated Metal free Ring opening Metathesis Polymerization written by Rachel Louise Tritt and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) involves the reaction of strained cyclic olefins to create polymers that retain the unsaturation of the initial monomer. Traditionally, this transformation has been achieved using metal alkylidene initiators, typically centered around one of three transition metals (Ru, Mo, W). While this strategy has many advantages, such as well-defined initiators, functional group stability, and microstructural control, an alternate, fully organic mechanistic strategy is possible (MF-ROMP). This method is distinct from its metal-based predecessor as it is enabled by photoredox-generated radical cationic species. As a result, it is subject to different considerations, specifically surrounding the behavior of the active chain-end. MF-ROMP also has different capabilities and possible applications due to this change in reactivity, which makes the development of this technology of great interest to us.This dissertation will first contextualize MF-ROMP, providing background on traditional ROMP, as well as on the electrochemical and photochemical cyclobutanations that inspired the development of the metal-free, photoredox-mediated method on which this document is centered. The initial development of MF-ROMP will also be covered in this section (Chapter 1). Next, the proposal for and discovery of the cross-metathesis method for chain transfer in MF-ROMP will be discussed, leading into preliminary work to leverage this mechanism for a fully organic system for small molecule cross-metathesis (Chapter 2). The use of chain transfer will then continue into the development of silane-functionalized polymers and oligomers for use in fiber-reinforced composites. Future directions for these materials and methods are also included, as well as preliminary results for extending this work into surface-initiated MF-ROMP (Chapter 3). The modulation of molar mass dispersity (♯0) is introduced next, illustrating the effect that simple changes to reaction conditions have on the progression of the polymerization. Suggestions for additional investigations based on this discovery are also included (Chapter 4). Finally, a cursory study on the ability to use aromatic alkenes as initiators in MF-ROMP is summarized. This work is also accompanied by a reflection on current limitations and future development of the technology (Chapter 5).

Book excerpt: The first NATO Advanced Study Institute on Olefin Metathesis and Polymerization Catalysts was held on September 10-22, 1989 in Akcay, Turkey. Based on the fundamental research of RRSchrock, RGrubbs and K.B.Wagener in the field of ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) and alkyne polymerization, these areas gained growing interest within the last years. Therefore the second NATO-ASI held on metathesis reactions was on Ring Opening Metathesis Po lymerization of Olefins and Polymerization of Alkynes on September 3-16, 1995 in Akcay, Turkey. The course joined inorganic, organic and polymer chemists to exchange their knowledge in this field. This volume contains the main and short lectures held in Akcay. To include ADMET reactions better into the title of this volume we changed it into: Metathesis Polymerization of Olefins and Alkyne Polymerization. This volume is addressed to research scientists, but also to those who start to work in the area of olefin metathesis and alkyne polymerization. The topics of the course were: mechanism of ROMP reactions/ new catalysts for ROMP/ new products by ROMP/ new catalysts for ADMET/ new products by ADMETI degradation of polymer by metathesis reactions/ alkyne polymerization and metathesis/ industrial application of metathesis reactions. Book Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization of Functionalized Cyclobutenes Derivatives

Download or read book Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization of Functionalized Cyclobutenes Derivatives written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, the development of well-defined carbene catalysts has revolutionized the field of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to monomer design for ROMP. In this project, a new family of functionalized polycyclic monomers based on the endo-Tricyclo[4.2.2.02,5]deca-3,9-diene structure with a variety of functional groups at the 7,8 positions has been prepared. Polymerization studies were performed with well-defined Schrock's molybdenum catalysts and a variety of Grubbs' ruthenium carbene catalysts. A living polymerization was obtained with Cl2Ru(=CHPh)(PCy3)2 (Ru-III). 19F NMR analysis indicated that the ortho and meta fluorinated substituents of the N-phenyl succinimide moiety could be regarded as sensitive reporters vis-à-vis the microstructure of the polymer. "Blocky" copolymers from a mixture of cis-cyclooctene and 7,8-N-2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl succinimide endo-Tricyclo[4.2.2.0[superscript 2,5]]deca-3,9-diene (M-7) could be prepared with Ru-III. The presence of cis-cyclooctene was shown to have an influence on the kinetics of the polymerization and the polymer microstructure. Kinetic studies with Ru-III indicated that faster polymerizations were obtained when the N-succinimide moiety was more electron-rich. The influence of steric hindrance on the polymerization was studied by the functionalization of the monomer structure with bulky polyaryl ether dendrons. A controlled polymerization was obtained with the very active Ru(=CHPh)Cl2(PCy3)(1,3-dimesityl-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene) (Ru-VI). This behavior was explained by the decrease of the propagation rate due to the bulkiness of the dendritic functional groups. Polymers functionalized with a variety of N-succinimide moieties displayed a remarkable thermal stability with decomposition temperatures above 300 & deg;C. No Tg was observed below decomposition temperature, indicating the genera.

Book Development of Organic Photoredox mediated Ring opening Metathesis Polymerization Through Expanded Functionalities of Initiators and Monomers

Download or read book Development of Organic Photoredox mediated Ring opening Metathesis Polymerization Through Expanded Functionalities of Initiators and Monomers written by Pengtao Lu and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), which is derived from transition-metal-based olefin metathesis, has evolved into one of the most prevalent technologies for making functional polymeric materials. Due to the nature of this polymerization method, the metal alkylidene remains covalently bound to the polymer chain end until the introduction of various quenchers to terminate the polymerization. However, the removal of resultant metal by-products requires multiple purification steps. Recently, our group pioneered establishment of organic photoredox-mediated ROMP (o-ROMP), which is driven by the motivation of developing a metal-free alternative to traditional ROMP. This thesis aims to contribute to the study of o-ROMP by describing our investigations in the field, with a particular emphasis on expanding scopes of functional initiators and monomers. Chapter 1 is an introduction to o-ROMP, which start with explanation of community interests on developing organic photoredox-mediated controlled polymerization (OPCP). The general mechanisms of these novel polymerizations, including the properties of various organic photoredox catalysts, will be reviewed first. The flowing discussion will focus on different kinds of established OPCPs, which emphasizes on unique scopes for each specific methods. We will end up the introduction part with our previous efforts on developing o-ROMP. Chapter 2 begins with our initial attempts on testing the feasibility of grafting o-ROMP from small-molecular multitopic initiators. The successful combination of this multidirectional growth mode with the design of macroinitiators facilitate preparation of polyether-based triblock copolymer and polystyrene-based graft copolymer, which are both acid cleavable. Chapter 3 describes our recent efforts on expanding the scope of macroinitiator towards polyesters and polycarbonates, which are derived from organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization (o-ROP). Grafting from bifunctional initiators in one pot, stepwise o-ROP and o-ROMP succeed in making biocompatible block copolymers via a completely metal-free pathway. Finally, Chapter 4 discusses our ongoing efforts in the expansion of monomer scopes, aiming to make functional polymers solely through o-ROMP strategy. The successful adoption of those deprotection-free functional monomers not only make it possible to enable post-polymerization modification, but also provide opportunity to control chain architectures of resulted polymer.

Book N Heterocyclic Carbenes in Transition Metal Catalysis and Organocatalysis

Download or read book N Heterocyclic Carbenes in Transition Metal Catalysis and Organocatalysis written by Catherine S.J. Cazin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N-Heterocyclic Carbenes in Transition Metal Catalysis and Organocatalysis features all catalytic reactions enabled by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), either directly as organocatalysts or as ligands for transition metal catalysts. An explosion in the use of NHCs has been reported in the literature during the past seven years making this comprehensive overview highly apropos. The book begins with an introductory overview of NHCs which could have been subtitled all you need to know about NHCs. The main body of the book is dedicated to applications of NHCs in catalysis. In addition to the success stories of NHCs in metathesis, NHCs in cross coupling and more recently NHCs in organocatalysis, all other less publicized areas are also covered. As the success of NHCs is generally attributed to their potential to stabilize metal centres, the inclusion of a chapter on the decomposition of NHC catalysts is pertinent. The book closes with a chapter describing the applications of NHCs in industrial processes, which is the first coverage of its kind, and brings a unique industrial context to this book. Included in this book: Historical aspects of NHCs Synthetic pathways to NHC precursors, free NHCs and complexes Methods of characterisation of NHCs and related complexes Electronic properties of NHCs Steric properties of NHCs and models for their description NHCs for metathesis and cross-coupling reactions NHCs as organocatalysts NHC Transition-Metal mediated oxidations, additions to multiple bonds, polymerisation and oligomerisation, cyclisations, direct arylations, reactions involving CO, C-F and C-H bond activation, ... Decomposition of NHC-containing catalysts Industrial applications involving NHC-containing catalysts N-Heterocyclic Carbenes in Transition Metal Catalysis and Organocatalysis provides a fresh view of NHCs since most contributors are young emerging researchers in the field of homogeneous catalysis using NHCs. This group of contributors is complemented by highly established academic researchers and an industrialist. This book is comprehensive, from the basic features of NHCs to the latest advances, hence it is suitable for both the novice and the expert.

Book Fundamentals of Polymerization

Download or read book Fundamentals of Polymerization written by Broja Mohan Mandal and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years, the field of the chemistry of polymerization witnessed enormous growth through the development of new concepts, catalysts, processes etc. Examples are: non classical living polymerizations (group transfer polymerization, living carbocationic polymerization, living radical polymerization and living ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP)); new catalysts (metallocenes and late transition metal catalysts for stereospecific polymerization, Schrock and Grubbs catalyst for ROMP among others) and new processes such as miniemulsion, microemulsion polymerization and dispersion polymerization (in polar solvents). Apart from the developments in the chemistry of polymerization, methods have been developed for the evaluation of highly reliable rate constants of propagation in radical as well as cationic polymerization. All these have revolutionized the field of synthetic polymer chemistry. In the book, fundamentals of both the new and old polymerization chemistry have been dealt with. The new chemistry has been given nearly equal space along with the old.
