Book Ethics and Sports Rules

Download or read book Ethics and Sports Rules written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two influential theses about right action in sporting games : one holds that right action should be judged based on "rule formalism" ; the other states that it should be judged according to "the ethos of the game". This thesis rejects both accounts. The former fails to see that the ethos side of a game affects the "contents" of sports rules whereas the latter is too broad to apprehend an appropriate account of ethos. While "the spirit of rules" and "the spirit of games" are more sustainable, they need to be elaborated further. Consequently, I proposed "the Olympic Spirit" (i.e. Olympism) as a better account of good ethos for all sports, to be regarded as the organizing concept for sport education. Specific points have been addressed as follows: (i) since there are different conceptions of sport and because of the current trends of debate, I have limited my focus to those commonly accepted "sporting games" or "sports contests" in which rules are governed rather than sports in general; (ii) the central sports rules can be seen just as "constitutive rules" as they are constituted/reconstructed by rule makers and stated in a rule book of a particular sporting game. They are also "quasi-regulative rules", given the premise that all rules are regulative. They are expandable rules based on the relevant ethos of a particular sporting game. (iii) sports rules are in certain aspects different from moral norms and laws. However, sports rules and laws should work together coherently and they should be protected by morality; (iv) it is held that rule formalism cannot fully elaborate on ethical issues (negative or positive) such as cheating and sportsmanship in sport; (v) "the ethos of games" covers "the spirit of rules" and "the spirit of games". "The spirit of rules" can be included in "the spirit of games", which determines how each particular game has to be played in concrete circumstances. A better account of "the spirit of games" is Olympism, which could cover all.

Book Sports Virtues and Vices

Download or read book Sports Virtues and Vices written by Mike McNamee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-05-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports have long played an important role in society. By exploring the evolving link between sporting behaviour and the prevailing ethics of the time this comprehensive and wide-ranging study illuminates our understanding of the wider social significance of sport. The primary aim of Sports, Virtues and Vices is to situate ethics at the heart of sports via ‘virtue ethical’ considerations that can be traced back to the gymnasia of ancient Greece. The central theme running through the book is that sports are effectively modern morality plays: universal practices of moral education for the masses and - when coached, officiated and played properly - a valuable vehicle for ethical development. Including a wealth of contemporary sporting examples, the book explores key ethical issues such as: How the pursuit of sporting excellence can lead to harm Doping, greed and shame Biomedical technology as a challenge to the virtue of elite athletes Defining a ‘virtue ethical account’ in sport Family vices and virtues in sport Written by one of the world's foremost sports philosophers, this book powerfully unites the fields of sports ethics and medical ethics. It is essential reading for all students and scholars with an interest in the ethics and philosophy of sport.

Book Ethical Decisions in Sport

Download or read book Ethical Decisions in Sport written by Edward J. Shea and published by Charles C. Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 1996 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Doctor Shea guides the reader through the labyrinth of contemporary ethical issues prevalent in sport, he presents, as the chief distinguishing feature of the text, a method or systematic model to deal with the core of ethical issues with which the entire field of competitive sport must struggle - power, and how to ethically manage it; success, and how to achieve it with integrity; conflict, and how to morally resolve it. The model, designed to logically structure thinking, allows one to apply an internal compass to guide them in judgment formation regarding the right ethical decision or action in sports. The method is intended to assist players, coaches, fans, governing officers of national sport organizations, and especially students preparing for careers in the sports field. The book contains thirty-three sport action photographs and interpretative captions which illustrate ethical or unethical actions of players, coaches, officials, and fans. A section of challenging questions and contemporary ethical incidents for discussion use conclude each chapter and will be of special interest to students. The text also provides current codes from four major categories of sport environments with a base of questions relating to application techniques, effectiveness in operation and interpretation.

Book Ethics and Sport in Europe

Download or read book Ethics and Sport in Europe written by Dominique Bodin and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defending ethics in sport is vital in order to combat the problems of corruption, violence, drugs, extremism and other forms of discrimination it is currently facing. Sport reflects nothing more and nothing less than the societies in which it takes place. However, if sport is to continue to bring benefits for individuals and societies, it cannot afford to neglect its ethical values or ignore these scourges. The major role of the Council of Europe and the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) in addressing the new challenges to sports ethics was confirmed by the 11th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Sport, held in Athens on 11 and 12 December 2008. A political impetus was given on 16 June 2010 by the Committee of Ministers, with the adoption of an updated version of the Code of Sports Ethics (Recommendation CM/Rec(2010)9), emphasising the requisite co-ordination between governments and sports organisations. The EPAS prepared the ministerial conference and stepped up its work in an international conference organised with the University of Rennes, which was attended by political leaders, athletes, researchers and officials from the voluntary sector. The key experiences described in the conference and the thoughts that it prompted are described in this publication. All the writers share the concern that the end result should be practical action - particularly in terms of the setting of standards - that falls within the remit of the EPAS and promotes the Council of Europe's core values.
