Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riddled with cannonball holes from their stunning defeat by the English Navy after trying to invade Queen Elizabeths Protestant realm in 1588 to restore Catholicism, the Spanish Armada sailed north around the Orkneys and Hebrides in their attempt to return home. The worst storms in fifty years, however, drove 24 Spanish ships relentlessly onto the rocky Irish coast, tearing them apart. Thousands of sailors and soldiers drowned; hundreds of unarmed Spaniards were slaughtered on the beaches. Those who fled across Ireland to reach Scotland faced daily peril for months. The story of those few who didnt die was told only once, by Captain Francisco de Cuellar. This true saga of survival against all odds, based upon Cuellars manuscript which lay hidden for 300 years, is vividly described in remarkable detail by historical novelists Paul Altrocchi and Julia Cooley Altrocchi, placing Captain Cuellar among the great heroes and legendary wanderers of history alongside Jason, seeker of the Golden Fleece; Sigurd, ancient Norse hero; and Homers Odysseus. Fraught With Hazard describes one of historys most dramatic and least-known talesthe fate of Spanish Armada survivors in Ireland after the English navy and stormy weather caused many of their warships to wreck on the treacherous Irish coast. Based on the sole witness-account of Captain Francisco de Cuellar, who endured seemingly endless death-defying crises before making it back to Spain, this enthralling epic is grippingly told by Paul and Julia Altrocchi. They breathe dazzling new life into a memorable 400 year-old saga of Homeric proportions. - Hank Whittemore, author of the compelling non-fiction books So That Others May Live and The Monument. It is hard to believe that the perilous adventures of Francisco de Cuellar are true but they are, and the Altrocchis breathtaking account of his daredevil escapades on the high-seas and on hostile shores is more vivid than the best that Hollywood has ever been able to offer. This is historical writing at its brightest, liveliest and very best. - English writer Alexander Waugh, author of the best-selling The House of Wittgenstein: A Family at War, and Fathers and Sons: The Autobiography of a Family.

Download or read book Journey Through America written by Wolfgang Koeppen and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amerikafahrt by Wolfgang Koeppen is a masterpiece of observation, analysis, and writing, based on his 1958 trip to the United States. A major twentieth-century German writer, Koeppen presents a vivid and fascinating portrait of the US in the late 1950s: its major cities, its literary culture, its troubled race relations, its multi-culturalism and its vast loneliness, a motif drawn, in part, from Kafka’s Amerika. A modernist travelogue, the text employs symbol, myth, and image, as if Koeppen sought to answer de Tocqueville’s questions in the manner of Joyce and Kafka. Journey through America is also a meditation on America, intended for a German audience and mindful of the destiny of postwar Europe under many Americanizing influences.

Book The Revival

Download or read book The Revival written by Costea Alain and published by Costea Alain. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The science-fiction novel "The Revival" is an explosion of imagination and surprising revolutionary concepts. It encompasses themes lush enough for multiple books, not just one. Author Alain Costea skillfully weaves these themes into the story without disrupting the narrative flow. The adventures and suspenseful moments are further enhanced by the specific techno-philosophical-sociological revelations characteristic of a richly layered hard SF. The remarkable talent of the author in constructing complex worlds and delving into the psychology of numerous characters allows him to create a true science fiction epic akin to the (space) operas of Alastair Reynolds or Peter F. Hamilton." "The characters in the book—whether main or secondary, human or extraterrestrial—are realistic, vibrant, and possess genuine purposes, dilemmas, and evolutions. Their portrayal is anchored in subtle presentations and psychological introspections. They evolve continuously, undergo transformations, restarts, and epiphanies throughout the story. Amidst the adventures and challenges they face, the protagonists develop their abilities and gain a deeper understanding of the world they inhabit. These penetrating details allow readers to connect with their motivations and experience all their trials and tribulations...." "A notable feature of the author`s style is his ability to explore essential philosophical themes and existential dilemmas. Without veering into moralizing or dogmatism, Alain Costea directs our thoughts toward humanity`s future, ethical quandaries, and the impact of advanced technology upon it. Each new concept applied in their near-future world serves as an invitation for reflection, prompting us to ask: "What would humanity do in such a situation?" The answer becomes far more intriguing when these notions or ideas, typically encountered in the works of great writers, receive a native context and national specificity. The Revival" is an ideal blend of anticipatory-speculative science fiction challenge and entertainment. It strikes a delicate balance, offering tense action within a universe laden with perplexing enigmas that demand deciphering. Its construction as a foundation for a future space opera series is subtly suggested by certain enticing technological developments. Rather than being a clear attribute of the present narrative, it serves as a delightful promise. The story possesses its own earthly flavor and culminates satisfactorily after nearly 700 pages that keep you on the edge of your seat. I recommend this novel not only to readers who appreciate the works of Alastair Reynolds, Peter F. Hamilton, or Philip K. Dick but also to fans of films like "The Matrix," "Contact," or even "Men in Black." Book excerpt: IMAGINATION DRIFT: THE CHALLENGE FOR FREEDOM is the second part of a trilogy. The satiric story continues with Zalador, in his quest to secure a place on the Supreme Council, must fulfil the requirements of a wish. The acceptance as a member of the Council means that the lion is given cosmic freedom; a release from the limits of his stay as an entity on the dry and dusty plains of his former Kingdom. In the first part of the trilogy, IMAGINATION DRIFT: A PRINCE FOR THREE DAYS Zalador’s attempt ends in the death of his wish-partner, Malcolm; but through an appeal he is given a second chance to complete the requirements to enter the Supreme Council. While Zalador has to select a new wish partner; he is given the additional task of assisting a young lion, the Major, in finding a wish-partner to achieve the requirements of the wish. The Major, a lion from the Urban Display Arena (the zoo), is arrogant and constantly reminds Zalador of his contacts on the Supreme Council; that he is sure to be selected; that he is chosen one. To Zalador dismay he has no contacts on the Supreme Council. The difficulty is that there are two lions competing for a single position on Council and the benefits from the galactic freedom. Both are aspiring to achieve a release from the earth-bound gravity and this creates the challenge. Zalador is suspicious of the Major’s intentions but is in the compromised position of assisting his competitor. This results in each picking on the weakness of the other to demoralize the competitor out of contention. The journey takes Zalador and the Major with the wish Partners, Princess and Sta, in and out of Paradise and the visit to a new Homeland. IMAGINATION DRIFT: A CHALLENGE FOR FREEDOM expresses human- people interactions and behaviors through animal perspectives.
