Book Rickenbacker Electric 12 String

Download or read book Rickenbacker Electric 12 String written by Tony Bacon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Byrds recorded their hit version of Dylan's “Mr. Tambourine Man ” they popularized a new sound in pop music: the electric 12-string guitar. Rickenbacker is the guitar maker that brought the electric 12-string to market and has since been almost single-handedly responsible for establishing what such a guitar should do. The California company gave one of its earliest 12-strings to George Harrison of the Beatles on the group's first tour of the United States in 1964. He immediately used it live and in the studio and showed off the sound of electric jangle to the rest of the world. This book tells the story of those heady days in the '60s, of the competitors who tried and failed to match the sound, and of the instrument's continuing production by Rickenbacker and use by many modern guitarists. Complete with high-quality photos and exclusive interviews with many of the 12-string's leading players, this is the best guide yet to the history of the sound of jingle-jangle.

Book Reconsidering a Century of Flight

Download or read book Reconsidering a Century of Flight written by Roger D. Launius and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright soared into history during a twelve-second flight on a secluded North Carolina beach. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first flight, these essays chart the central role that aviation played in twentieth-century history and capture the spirit of innovation and adventure that has characterized the history of flight. The contributors, all leading aerospace historians, consider four broad themes relating to the development of flight technology: innovation and the technology of flight, civil aeronautics and government policy, aerial warfare, and aviation in the American imagination. Through their attention to the political, economic, military, and cultural history of flight, the authors establish that the Wrights' invention--and all that followed in both air and space--was one of the most significant technologies of the twentieth century, fundamentally reshaping our world. Supported by the First Flight Centennial Commission The contributors are Janet R. Daly Bednarek, Tami Davis Biddle, Roger E. Bilstein, Hans-Joachim Braun, David T. Courtwright, Anne Collins Goodyear, Roger D. Launius, William M. Leary, David D. Lee, W. David Lewis, John H. Morrow, Dominick A. Pisano, and A. Timothy Warnock.

Book excerpt: 15 Stars presents the intertwined lives of three great men—Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Marshall—against the sweeping background of six unforgettable decades, from the two world wars to the Cold War. As it reveals the personalities behind the public images, it shows how much of a difference three men can make not only to a nation, but the world. In the closing days of World War II, America looked up to three five-star generals as its greatest heroes. George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Douglas MacArthur personified victory, from the Pentagon to Normandy to the Far East. Counterparts and on occasion competitors, they had leapfrogged each other, sometimes stonewalled each other, even supported and protected each other throughout their celebrated careers. In the public mind they stood for glamour, integrity, and competence. But for dramatic twists of circumstance, all three—rather than only one—might have occupied the White House.

Book Lucky Man

Download or read book Lucky Man written by Greg Lake and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greg Lake first won acclaim as lead vocalist, bass guitarist and producer when, together with Robert Fripp, he formed King Crimson. Their first album, the landmark In the Court of the Crimson King, co-produced by Greg, featured the iconic song '21st Century Schizoid Man'. King Crimson pioneered progressive rock and paved the way for many famous bands that followed, from Yes and Genesis to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. In 1970 Greg met fellow legend Keith Emerson during a North American tour; the two shared common bonds: European musical influences and a desire to reinterpret classical works while creating a new musical genre. After being introduced to drummer Carl Palmer, they formed the first progressive rock supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer. To date ELP has sold over 50 million records. Lake produced Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Tarkus, Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, Works Vol. 1 and 2, and two different live albums. All went platinum and featured a series of hit singles, most written and all sung by Lake. The three created a unique live theatrical performance which featured Emerson attacking his keyboards with knives, Palmer playing a 2.5 ton stainless steel kit and Lake performing on a £6,000 Persian rug which had its own roadie. One of their very first performances was at the historic Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 and they went on to headline California Jam, one of the biggest concerts of the 1970s, attended by 350,000 people. Probably the voice of his generation, Greg fronted the greatest rock supergroup of the 1970s but never held with the 'progressive' tag that attached itself to both the music and the excess. Lucky Man not only charts the highs and lows of a career in rock music but also reflects on the death of Keith Emerson last year, living with terminal cancer and the end of life. Greg can best be summed up by his now-famous line: 'Material wealth is a very fleeting pleasure ... when you can buy anything you want and do anything you want, you soon discover that you actually don't want any of it.'

Book The Lucky Unborn

  • Author : Kenneth S. Most
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2005-09-07
  • ISBN : 1465333541
  • Pages : 174 pages

Download or read book The Lucky Unborn written by Kenneth S. Most and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-09-07 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lucky Unborn is a definite page-turner with plenty of sex, crime, drugs, revenge, betrayal and other ingredients of our corrupt age. It is the story of an average man who has disappeared, leaving behind a manuscript that documents the gradual disintegration of his life. The settings (wartime London, subtropical Miami, Bogota) are descriptively and atmospherically drawn. High points of the narrative are a monologue by his paramour, and a lecture he delivers on the personality and motivation of Shakespeare's Othello. Essentially a modern morality tale, the issues raised are discussed honestly and non-judgmentally in a direct narrative unembellished by literary artifice.
