Book Richard Wagner s Letters

Download or read book Richard Wagner s Letters written by Richard Wagner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richard Wagner's Letters: To His Dresden Friends, Theodor Uhlig, Wilhelm Fischer, and Ferdinand Heine Liszt he writes two lines about the death of his clear little parrot but to Uhlig a whole letter. I would specially ask readers of these letters not to forget their specially private character; the bitter remarks about certain musicians of note, the violent denunciations of men standing in high places, and the liberty of speech in which he occasionally indulges 'must all be considered privileged. They evidently were never intended for the public eye. In a certain degree, one may regret the publication of such letters; there is a tendency to pick out what is objectionable for condemnation, if not ridicule. The good and the bad must, however, be taken together. To have both put before us is in one respect a great advantage we have the w/zole man, and no one-sided representation. A few particulars respecting the three friends to whom these letters are addressed may perhaps prove welcome. Book Re reading Wagner

Download or read book Re reading Wagner written by Reinhold Grimm and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary collection of readings offers suggestive new interpretations of Richard Wagner's ideological position in German history. The issues discussed range from the biographical--the reasons for Wagner's travels, his spotted political life--to the aesthetic and ideological, regarding his re-creation of medieval Nuremberg, his representations of gender and nationality, his vocal iconography, his anti-Semitism, and his vegetarianarguments, and, finally, his musical heirs. The essays are written by Tamara S. Evans, Edward R. Haymes, Peter Uwe Hohendahl, Peter Morris-Keitel, Alexa Larson-Thorisch, Audrius Dundzila, Marc A. Weiner, Jost Hermand, Frank Trommler, and Hans Rudolf Vaget. Avoiding journalistic or iconoclastic approaches to Wagner, these writers depart from the usual uncritical admiration of earlier scholars to develop a stimulating and ultimately cohesive collection of new perspectives.

Book Religious Experience in the Work of Richard Wagner

Download or read book Religious Experience in the Work of Richard Wagner written by Marcel Hebert and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosopher Marcel Hébert developed his Religious Experience in the Work of Richard Wagner (1895) from this background of sustained popular interest in Wagner, an interest that had intensified with the return of his operas to the Paris stage. Newspaper debates about the impact of Wagner's ideas on French society often stressed the links between Wagner and religion. These debates inspired works like Hébert's, intended to explain the complex myth and allegory in Wagner's work and to elucidate it for a new generation of French spectators.

  • Author : H.F. Garten
  • Publisher : Alma Books

Download or read book Wagner the Dramatist written by H.F. Garten and published by Alma Books. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Wagner has fascinated every generation of opera-lovers for over a century, and a mass of literature has interpreted and reinterpreted not only his character, but also the components of the great music dramas that are still some of the most captivating and complex operas in the international repertory today. In this excellent study, Garten examines the cultural and historical sources of these operas: the myths and legends that Wagner employed, in which much of his works' interest, other than the purely musical, can be found. Garten's study also shows how legends of the old Nordic gods, the troubadours and Minnesingers, the quest for the grail, as well as stories taken from folklore and history, were transformed into the theatrical mythology of Wagner's music dramas.

Book National Traditions in Nineteenth Century Opera Volume II

Download or read book National Traditions in Nineteenth Century Opera Volume II written by Michael C. Tusa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a cross-section of English-language scholarship on German and Slavonic operatic repertories of the "long nineteenth century," giving particular emphasis to four areas: German opera in the first half of the nineteenth century; the works of Richard Wagner after 1848; Russian opera between Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov; and the operas of Richard Strauss and Janácek. The essays reflect diverse methods, ranging from stylistic, philological, and historical approaches to those rooted in hermeneutics, critical theory, and post-modernist inquiry.

Book Wagner and Beethoven

Download or read book Wagner and Beethoven written by Klaus Kropfinger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-07-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the lifelong impact of Beethoven's music on Wagner and its importance for his conception of music drama. Kropfinger charts and scrutinizes Wagner's early responses to the composer and considers his experience as a conductor of Beethoven's music. A discussion of the Romantic "Beethoven image" leads to a careful study of Wagner's aesthetic writings, including his "programmatic explanations," the text "Concerning Franz Liszt's symphonic poems," and his Beethoven centenary essay. The penultimate chapter addresses Wagner's theory and practice of music drama, which he came to regard as the preordained successor to the Beethoven symphony. By analyzing special terms--such as "Leitmotiv"--Wagner's structural view of musical drama comes to the fore; it is a view that deepens not only our understanding of musical drama as a "hybrid" genre of art but also of purely musical structure and forms that Wagner sought to outdo.
