Book For Virginia and for Independence

Download or read book For Virginia and for Independence written by Harry M. Ward and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase "American Revolutionary War Hero" usually brings to mind George Washington, John Paul Jones and other famous officers. Heroes, however, existed throughout the ranks during the Revolution, and many made their marks without ever receiving proper recognition. These portraits of 28 Virginia Revolutionary soldiers expand the historical record of those who can be called a "hero." Whether as infantryman, cavalryman, marine, militiaman, spy, frontier fighter or staffer, all performed with distinction that contributed to victory. A strongman who performed superhuman feats during battle; a woman who fought as a soldier; a militiaman who sounded a fateful alarm--some gave their lives, others were terribly wounded, but all demonstrated heroism beyond the call of duty.

Book He Fell a Cheerful Sacrifice to His Country s Glorious Cause General William Woodford of Virginia Revolutionary War Patriot

Download or read book He Fell a Cheerful Sacrifice to His Country s Glorious Cause General William Woodford of Virginia Revolutionary War Patriot written by Michael Cecere and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one thinks of the American heroes of the Revolutionary War, the names Washington, Greene, Lee, Morgan, and even Arnold come to mind. Much has been written of these American patriots, and rightly so, but the attention these officers have long received has also obscured the contributions of many, many other patriots of the Revolutionary War. One such person is General William Woodford of Virginia, a man chosen by Virginia's leaders to command a regiment of Virginia regulars at the onset of war and who remained in service for over five years. William Woodford began his service in 1775 as colonel of the 2nd Virginia Regiment during which he and his men handily defeated Lord Dunmore's force of British regulars and runaway slaves at Great Bridge. Woodford was promoted to brigadier-general in 1777 and commanded Virginia troops at Brandywine (where he was wounded in the hand), Valley Forge, and Monmouth. On each of these occasions, along with countless smaller engagements, General Woodford and his men contributed significantly to the American cause. Their service came at great sacrifice, and as the war dragged on, Woodford's health declined. He remained in service, however, and when General Washington ordered the entire Virginia continental line to march to Charleston, South Carolina, to assist in the defense of that important town, Woodford led the troops. They arrived in April 1780, just in time to become trapped with the rest of the American garrison. A month of fruitless resistance against a far superior enemy force ended with the surrender of the entire American garrison. Five years of service culminated with captivity, first in South Carolina, during which Woodford's health declined precipitously, and then in New York, where he was sent in a desperate attempt to recover his health. Alas, it was not to be, and General Woodford joined the ranks of thousands of other patriots who paid the ultimate sacrifice for American independence. This book highlights William Woodford's service and sacrifice. An index to full-names, places and subjects; maps; and a bibliography add to the value of this work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Henry Lee played a pivotal role during the American Revolution, yet he remains one of the most misunderstood revolutionaries. His contemporaries, as well as modern historians, deemed him a political opportunist or dismissed him as an enigma. In bridging the gap between Lee's private interests and public career, J. Kent McGaughy seeks to overturn many of the misconceptions about Lee and shows that, throughout his life, he remained dedicated to his family and public service. By separating fact from fiction and unraveling the history of Lee's life and the times in which he lived, J. Kent McGaughy brings to light not only the truth about Lee, but also the hidden history of the American Revolution.

Book A Brave Active and Intrepid Soldier Lieutenant Colonel Richard Campbell of the Virginia Continental Line

Download or read book A Brave Active and Intrepid Soldier Lieutenant Colonel Richard Campbell of the Virginia Continental Line written by Michael Cecere and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Campbell of Virginia is one of thousands of Revolutionary War veterans whose service and sacrifice in America's War for Independence is largely unknown to his countrymen today. Lieutenant Colonel Campbell did not leave behind a detailed diary or a trove of letters from which to remember his life. Campbell's legacy was his service and ultimately, his sacrifice for the American cause of independence. Campbell's nearly six years of service in the continental army included engagements in New Jersey and Pennsylvania as well as on the frontier and in the southern states of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. A veteran of six major battles, (Brandywine, Germantown, Guilford Courthouse, Hobkirk's Hill, Ninety-Six, and Eutaw Springs) and numerous smaller engagements on the frontier and in the South and mid-Atlantic, Campbell's service and sacrifice for his country is an accomplishment in its own right and a testament to his courage and patriotism. As such, he deserves to be remembered as General Washington described him, as one who, "sustains the character of a good and brave Officer and has behaved as such during his service." Washington was not alone in his high regard for Campbell, General Nathanael Greene, who commanded Lieutenant Colonel Campbell at Guilford Courthouse, Hobkirk's Hill, Ninety-Six, and Eutaw Springs, proclaimed that Campbell, "was the great Soldier and the firm patriot," who was "a brave, active, and intrepid Soldier." Such high praise from the two leading military commanders of the continental army, surely warrant a closer look into the life and service of the soldier being praised. Such is the purpose of this book. Maps, a bibliography, and an index to full-names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.
