Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected here for the first time are rarely seen and largely unpublished figurative drawings and paintings on paper that represent a period of exploration and innovation for Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993). Perhaps the most renowned West Coast painter of the twentieth century, Diebenkorn alternated between the figurative and the abstract. These pieces, dating from roughly the mid-1950s to the late 1960s, not only display his facility with the human form but also how his famed Ocean Park paintings were influenced by these explorations. Published in conjunction with the John Berggruen Gallery, this revealing collection features 42 drawings, paintings, and gouaches. Beautifully reproduced on the page, Richard Diebenkorn: Figurative Works on Paper fills a key gap in the literature of this premier American artist.

Download or read book American Printmaking written by James Watrous and published by Madison, Wis. : University of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this blend of cultural history and survey of printmaking, Watrous traces the roots and evolution of the art from American etching and wood-engraving of the late 19th century through Joseph Pennell's industrial-age prints, the urban genre of John Sloan, George Bellows, and Edward Hopper, the Federally-funded Depression-era graphic art projects, the post-World War II avante-garde trends to the innovations that flourished later in the century. His story is one of prints, people, and events, covering the printmakers, their artistic conceptions and works, curators, dealers, collectors, critics, printers, workshops and exhibitions, and the roles played by elites and the masses. Prints reproduced include those by James Whistler, Mary Cassatt, Max Weber, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roy Lichtenstein and Mauricio Lasansky. Download or read book Printmaking in America written by Trudy V. Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1995-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years from 1960 to 1990 witnessed an extraordinary outburst of creative activity among American printmakers. A number of important new workshops were founded, from such influential studios as Universal Limited Art Editions as Long Island and the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles to small presses throughout the country. In contrast to traditional European ateliers, where professional printers reproduced artists' designs for commercial edition printing, the new American workshops stressed collaboration, and emphasized radical experimentation with medium and process. The work produced in these studios often owed as much to the imaginative gifts of the printer as the conception of the artist.
