Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of innovative modern methodologies towards augmenting conventional plant breeding, in individual crops, for the production of new crop varieties under the increasingly limiting environmental and cultivation factors to achieve sustainable agricultural production, enhanced food security, in addition to providing raw materials for innovative industrial products and pharmaceuticals. This Volume 5, subtitled Cereals, focuses on advances in breeding strategies using both traditional and modern approaches for the improvement of individual crops. It addresses important staple food crops including barley, fonio, finger millet, foxtail millet, pearl millet, proso millet, quinoa, rice, rye, tef, triticale and spelt wheat. The volume is contributed by 53 internationally reputable scientists from 14 countries. Each chapter comprehensively reviews the modern literature on the subject and reflects the authors own experience.

Book Genetics and Rice Breeding

Download or read book Genetics and Rice Breeding written by Othman Omar and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic variability is utilized in rice breeding. Varietal improvement in Malaysia started with utilization of Sd1 gene from Dee-geo-woo-gen in hybridization and this resulted in release of Ria. All subsequent released varieties possessed Sd1 gene. Setanjung and MR 84 were the two more successful varieties due to low spikelet sterility and high stability. Yield has reached an apparent plateau. In order to achieve a higher level of productivity, breeding for new plant type is being pursued using IR 66072-11-4, Shen Nung 89-366, low tillering traditional varieties and long grain varieties as donors of desirable traits. New target of yield components of new rice varieties should be set: heavier grains (28-30 mg/grain) and 80-100 filled grains per panicle to obtain higher yields. Hybrid rice varieties can achieve 20-30% standard heterosis.

Book EIRLSBN Twenty years of achievements in rice breeding

Download or read book EIRLSBN Twenty years of achievements in rice breeding written by B.C.Y. Collard and published by IRRI. This book was released on 2013 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
