Book Rhythm in Speech Prose and Verse

Download or read book Rhythm in Speech Prose and Verse written by Jürgen Esser and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2011 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to other works, the linguistic approach to rhythm presented in this book does not start from decontextualized structures but from performance data in a bottom-up fashion. Drawing on Halliday's distinction between wording, writing, and sounding, the proposed model takes account of several levels of abstraction. Important categories for data analysis are syllable rhythm and accent rhythm, which interact to establish prominence patterns (peaks and valleys) that can be observed in spontaneous and prepared speech, readings and recitals. Excluding subjective factors of analysis, the new model offers a tool to describe the rhythmic potential of prose and verse and to evaluate rhythmic performances of reading and reciting.

Book Hopkins s Poetics of Speech Sound

Download or read book Hopkins s Poetics of Speech Sound written by James I. Wimsatt and published by . This book was released on 2006-12-16 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although virtually unknown in his lifetime, Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) is counted today among the great nineteenth-century poets. His poetry was collected and published posthumously by his friend Robert Bridges in 1917, and subsequently Hopkins's reputation flowered, though more as a modern writer than as Victorian, and very little as a poetic theorist. Yet the body of Hopkins's critical writing reveals sharp insight into the subject of poetics, and presents an innovative theory that locates primary poetic meaning in 'figures of speech sound.' These 'figures of speech sound' provide the focus for James I. Wimsatt's erudite and original study. Drawing from Hopkins's diaries, letters, student essays, and correspondence with poet-friends, Wimsatt illuminates Hopkins's theory that the sound of poetic language carries an emotional, not merely logical and grammatical, meaning. Wimsatt concentrates his study on Hopkins's writings about 'sprung rhythm,' 'lettering,' and 'inscape,' - his coinages - and makes abundant reference to Hopkins's verse, showing how it exemplifies his language theory. A well-researched and highly detailed book, Hopkins's Poetics of Speech Sound asserts major significance for a relatively neglected aspect of this important poet's writings.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metrical Rhythm: Being an Examination of a Recent Attempt to Determine the Basis of English Rhythm in Verse and Prose Having thus cleared the ground, Mr. Thomson next 7 to 12) applies his method to the phenomena of English speech. He claims that while the distribution of time over the syllables between the accents might conceivably be quite irregular, as a matter of fact it is regular, and usually conforms to what the musician calls Triple Time. This Time he accordingly considers the real basis of English rhythm, in prose as well as verse, while admitting exceptions both through irregularities and through the occasional intru sion of Common Time, in either its duple or quadruple form. The difference between prose and verse he describes shortly thus (end of In poetry [scilicet verse], variation within the foot is limited; in prose it is free. Metre [this word here used for the first time] may occur in prose, but it must not be perceptible, as it is in verse. Book The Rhythms of English Poetry

Download or read book The Rhythms of English Poetry written by Derek Attridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the way in which poetry in English makes use of rhythm. The author argues that there are three major influences which determine the verse-forms used in any language: the natural rhythm of the spoken language itself; the properties of rhythmic form; and the metrical conventions which have grown up within the literary tradition. He investigates these in order to explain the forms of English verse, and to show how rhythm and metre work as an essential part of the reader's experience of poetry.
