Book excerpt: Rhythm is produced in "natural" as well as "cultural" ways. Natural rhythm is not controlled by man, no more than we can control the ebb and tide of the ocean, the rising and setting of the sun, the seasons of the year, or our own life cycle, heartbeat or breathing. But what man does with his body may become a cultural fact: the way we walk, work, dance, sing, make music and decorate objects. In music, rhythm is the organization of time in units. In visual arts rhythm refers to the arrangement of regularly recurring motifs. Rhythmic cycles in the music of the Islamic world are illustrated in the correspondences between the art of sound and the other arts: poetry and musical rhythms are related to geometrical patterns and calligraphy. In South Indian music, the analogies between rhythm, woven patterns and symbolic figures are striking. Weaving patterns reveal themselves as they emerge from the loom or unfold before the discerning eye, just as a listener delights in the patterns gradually perceived by the mind, and not merely received by the ear. The symbolic meanings of motifs and colors are an expression of the relation between man and the cosmos." Rhythm, A Dance in Time" explores all these aspects of rhythm: rhythm to be heard and rhythm to be seen.

Book When The Drummers Were Women A Spiritual History of Rhythm

Download or read book When The Drummers Were Women A Spiritual History of Rhythm written by Layne Redmond and published by Echo Point Books & Media, LLC. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, the sacred drummers of pre-Christian Mediterranean and western Asia were women. In this inspiring book, Layne Redmond, herself a renowned drummer, tells their history. Artistic representations reveal that female frame drummers carried the spiritual traditions of many of the earliest recorded civilizations. During those ancient times, the drummer-priestesses held the keys to experience of the divine through rhythm. They were at the center of the goddess worship of matriarchal societies until the ascendance of patriarchal cultures and the loss of drumming as a spiritual technology. With wisdom and passion, Redmond chronicles our species’ deep connection to the drum, our rich heritage of inseparable spirituality and music, and the modern-day women reclaiming it. This book encourages readers—both women and men—to reestablish rhythmic links with themselves, nature, and other people through the power of drumming. Redmond illustrates her message with an extensive collection of images gathered during ten years of research and travel. Woven throughout the book are strands of ancient ritual and mythology, personal stories, and scientific evidence of the benefits of drumming. It is at once a history, a memoir, and a resounding call for spiritual and social renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and visionary call to action on educating and supporting girls of color, from the highly acclaimed author of Pushout, with a foreword by award-winning educational abolitionist Bettina Love Wise Black women have known for centuries that the blues have been a platform for truth-telling, an underground musical railroad to survival, and an essential form of resistance, healing, and learning. In this “powerful call to action” (Rethinking Schools), leading advocate Monique W. Morris invokes the spirit of the blues to articulate a radically healing and empowering pedagogy for Black and Brown girls. Morris describes with candor and love what it looks like to meet the complex needs of girls on the margins. Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues is a “vital, generous, and sensitively reasoned argument for how we might transform American schools to better educate Black and Brown girls” (San Francisco Chronicle). Morris brings together research and real life in this chorus of interviews, case studies, and the testimonies of remarkable people who work successfully with girls of color. The result is this radiant guide to moving away from punishment, trauma, and discrimination toward safety, justice, and genuine community in our schools.

Book excerpt: One woman embarked on a dance journey around the world, finding out how each dance tells a story of its country and learning how beautiful life can be when you take the lead. If you could do anything you wanted, what would it be? Aliénor Salmon was working as a happiness researcher in Bangkok when a friend asked her the question that turned life as she knew it on its heels. A novice dancer but experienced social researcher, the Franco-British Aliénor headed west from Bangkok to dance her way through Latin America. As she learns eighteen dances, each native to the countries she visits, she engages with esoteric customs, traditions, and cultures. Through conversations and arduous studio hours, she learns that every step, pivot, and shake thrums with an undeniable spirit of place. And that in a world where we are over-connected but increasingly disconnected from one another, dance offers an authentically human experience. One that allows her to develop tolerance, kindness, truth, and love by holding the hands of a stranger and gazing into their eyes for the time of a song. With her fearless and candid approach, Aliénor will inspire you to take the reins of your own life—and have some fun along the way. In this dance-travelogue, you’ll learn the history and steps of dances like salsa, samba, and tango, enjoy a resplendent meditation on happiness and wanderlust, and receive a life-affirming answer to the question: How do I take the first step?

Book excerpt: Inka Parei’s third novel again looks back at German history through the eyes of its characters. In a race against time, a man has to find out whether his ex-wife was contaminated by fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. He revisits and questions his own memories of working in the chilling ‘cold centre’ —the air-conditioning plant for the East German party newspaper. Was he a cog at the heart of the system, did he fail to prevent a tragic accident, and can he find out exactly what happened back then before it’s too late? Berlin, 2006: a man worked in the Neues Deutschland newspaper building in the 1980s and later left East Germany. One day he gets a call from his ex-wife. She’s in hospital, waiting for an exact cancer diagnosis. To help her, he returns to the city and tries to reconstruct the events of a few days in May 1986. Was a truck from the Ukraine that she came into contact with contaminated? And why does the death of a workmate for which he blamed himself now seem more doubtful than ever? Are the events back then the reason why he’s never really come to rest in life? He soon begins to lose control over his days in Berlin, entering into a desperate search for orientation over a fracture in his own life—one he has never got over. Written in Parei’s characteristic precise prose, the novel is a timely reminder of how we react to accidents, nuclear and otherwise, and a bleakly realistic description of East Berlin before the Wall fell. But its tight and dizzying structure keeps readers on the edge of their seats as the narrator tries to solve his very own mystery.

Book The Philosophy of Rhythm

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Cheyne
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 0199347778
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book The Philosophy of Rhythm written by Peter Cheyne and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhythm is the fundamental pulse that animates poetry, music, and dance across all cultures. And yet the recent explosion of scholarly interest across disciplines in the aural dimensions of aesthetic experience--particularly in sociology, cultural and media theory, and literary studies--has yet to explore this fundamental category. This book furthers the discussion of rhythm beyond the discrete conceptual domains and technical vocabularies of musicology and prosody. With original essays by philosophers, psychologists, musicians, literary theorists, and ethno-musicologists, The Philosophy of Rhythm opens up wider-and plural-perspectives, examining formal affinities between the historically interconnected fields of music, dance, and poetry, while addressing key concepts such as embodiment, movement, pulse, and performance. Volume editors Peter Cheyne, Andy Hamilton, and Max Paddison bring together a range of key questions: What is the distinction between rhythm and pulse? What is the relationship between everyday embodied experience, and the specific experience of music, dance, and poetry? Can aesthetics offer an understanding of rhythm that helps inform our responses to visual and other arts, as well as music, dance, and poetry? And, what is the relation between psychological conceptions of entrainment, and the humane concept of rhythm and meter? Overall, The Philosophy of Rhythm appeals across disciplinary boundaries, providing a unique overview of a neglected aspect of aesthetic experience.
