This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhythm as a Distinguishing Characteristic of Prose Style, Vol. 15: As a Distinguishing Characteristic of Prose Style A cursory glance at Table I shows that each selection has a foot of maximum frequency, either (1) or (2) that the curves rise more steeply than they descend; that there is considerable variety of shape in the curves. A few typical ones have been plotted and are given in the accompanying charts. The points to be noted are: the acute and the rounded summit, the steep and the gradual descent, the summit in (1) and the summit in the double apex or dip (milton and Stevenson). Before proceeding to discuss the figures presented in the pre ceding tables, it will be desirable to give some evidence of their reli ability; first, as measures of objective fact; second, as typical of the whole work from which each selection was taken. Book The Influence of caffein on mental and motor efficiency

Download or read book The Influence of caffein on mental and motor efficiency written by Harry Levi Hollingworth and published by . This book was released on 1912 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the spring of 1911 the writer was called on by the Coca-Cola Company, of Atlanta, Ga., for an opinion as to the influence of caffein on mental and motor processes. In the absence of adequate reliable data (see discussion of previous investigations) it seemed necessary to conduct a set of careful experiments before any opinion could be rendered with either fairness or certainty, which was the task that this book took on. The results for each chapter's experiments are briefly summarized at the close of the chapters. It is clear at once that caffein influences all the tests in a given group in much the same way. The effect on motor processes comes quickly and is transient. The effect on higher mental processes comes more slowly and is more persistent. Whether this result is due to quicker reaction on the part of motor nerve centers, or whether it is due to a direct peripheral effect on the muscle tissue, the pure psychologist can hardly be expected to know. Physiological experiment, however, seems to indicate that caffein has a direct effect on the muscle tissue, and that this effect is fairly rapid in appearance. The physiology of absorption also explains the fact that the presence of food substance in the stomach retards and reduces the caffein influence. The dependence of the amount of the caffein influence on the body weight of the individual has already been explained in terms of the amount of the substance ingested per unit of tissue affected". Book Handbook of Empirical Literary Studies

Download or read book Handbook of Empirical Literary Studies written by Donald Kuiken and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook reviews efforts to increase the use of empirical methods in studies of the aesthetic and social effects of literary reading. The reviewed research is expansive, including extension of familiar theoretical models to novel domains (e.g., educational settings); enlarging empirical efforts within under-represented research areas (e.g., child development); and broadening the range of applicable quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., computational stylistics; phenomenological methods). Especially challenging is articulation of the subtle aesthetic and social effects of literary artefacts (e.g., poetry, film). Increasingly, the complexity of these effects is addressed in multi-variate studies, including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. While each chapter touches upon the historical background of a specific research topic, two chapters address the area’s historical background and guiding philosophical assumptions. Taken together, the material in this volume provides a systematic introduction to the area for early career professionals, while challenging active researchers to develop theoretical frameworks and empirical procedures that match the complexity of their research objectives.
