Download or read book Rhyme and Reason written by Juan Uriagereka and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unusual book takes the form of a dialogue between a linguist and another scientist. This unusual book takes the form of a dialogue between a linguist and another scientist. The dialogue takes place over six days, with each day devoted to a particular topic--and the ensuing digressions. The role of the linguist is to present the fundamentals of the minimalist program of contemporary generative grammar. Although the linguist serves essentially as a voice for Noam Chomsky's ideas, he is not intended to be a portrait of Chomsky himself. The other scientist functions as a kind of devil's advocate, making the arguments that linguists tend to face from those in the "harder" sciences. The author does far more than simply present the minimalist program. He conducts a running argument over the status of theoretical linguistics as a natural science. He raises the general issues of how we conceive words, phrases, and transformations, and what these processes tell us about the human mind. He also attempts to reconcile generative grammar with the punctuated equilibrium version of evolutionary theory. In his foreword, Massimo Piatelli-Palmarini says, "The vast number of readers who have been enthralled by Goedel, Escher, Bach may well like also this syntactic companion, a sort of 'Chomsky, Fibonacci, Bach.'".

Download or read book Rhymes for No Reason written by Anton Wills-Eve and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This small selection from the poems I have written in English in 2012 is aimed mainly at showing how the different styles of versification and rhyme, especially free or blank verse, have changed in the past year. What matters with the poems in this book is that the readers should imagine they are experiencing the stories, thoughts and ideas for themselves alone and not adhering rigidly to any particular metric pattern or established form. The fact that many of the samples are in fact stories is no coincidence. I find that doing a brief resume of a novel in verse first then makes it much easier to write the ensuing book. Indeed the novel I am currently writing, Locked in and Locked Out, is based largely on two of the poems in this selection. As this is the road down which modern poets are meandering more and more, I am happy to be with them on their pilgrimage as I hope my readers will be also. Anton Wills-Eve December 2012.

Download or read book A Dictionary of Rhyming Slang written by Julian Franklyn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This re-issue of Julian Franklyn's classic dictionary not only defines these expressions but also explains their origin and history. An introductory essay examines the roots and development of rhyming slang. Although many people assume that rhyming slang is exclusively Cockney, Franklyn illustrates how it is common to Australian and Americn dialects. From the unlikely to the bizarre, the 1,500 entries both entertain and enlighten. Cartoons enliven a reference section which combines linguistic detail and cultural analysis. Whether reading the dictionary from cover to cover, or dipping into it as a reference tool, linguists and students of popular culture will find it the definitive source of information on rhyming slang.
Download or read book Reason For Rhyme written by Anthony Reid and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an entertaining and thought provoking read, a collection of over 100 poems from a new author. Anthony undoubtedly had his own unique style which consistently brings a nice combination of alliteration and rhyming couplets to the forefront without sacrificing depth and meaning - in fact many of his pieces carry very profound and positive messages. There are also quirky, humorous poems and other light-hearted offerings scattered throughout helping to set a nice pace that keeps you turning the pages. Overall the book is more an account of one mans insights into the world he seems to find himself at odds with, though, perhaps ironically, they invariably end up conveying sentiments that I think many of us share. With subjects such as love, loneliness, politics, family, work and faith - the book gives good variety whilst managing to maintain a continuity in style & technique. If you're seeking a breath of poetic 'fresh air' in the shape of something current & ably crafted then 'Reason For Rhyme' is a must.
