Download or read book Rhymes for Doing Time written by James Perkins and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-10-11 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhymes for Doing Time provides a unique opportunity to use real-life situations that come up every day in prison or upon release--to help a prisoner develop a closer walk with God and to make their time easier, knowing that they may be just an inmate to the guards or even to the world, but they are or can become a child of the Most High God! The book has a page for every day and is formatted so that it describes a situation that happened to a prisoner, describing how he or she reacted to different situations that came up. Then it shows a situation that happened to a person or persons in the Bible, and then it draws a practical or a spiritual application between the two. It gives people a chance to realize that the Bible is living and practical, and it shows them that the same God back in Bible times hasn't changed one bit! The book also has inspirational poems that were written by the author to uplift his friends. They are perfect for prisoners to send to their families in cards and letters for everything from birthdays to holidays.
Download or read book Doing Time written by Lee Carruthers and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposes that cinematic time is not a fixed idea, but a dynamic exchange between film and viewer. Doing Time addresses two areas of interest in recent film studyfilm temporality and film philosophyto propose an innovative theorization of cinematic time that sees it as a dynamic process of engagement, or something we do as viewers. This active relation to cinematic time, which discloses a films temporal character, is called its timeliness. Here it is traced across a range of fascinating case studies from Hollywood and the global art cinema, uncovering each films characteristic way of doing time. Throughout, the ambiguities of filmic time are held as powerful attractions as they modulate film viewing: such pauses, gaps, repetitions, and stretches of time illuminate a living field that extends from viewing activity. Drawing on the writings of French film critic and theorist André Bazin, as well as the phenomenology of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Lee Carruthers forwards a claim about the value of cinematic time for thinking. She also raises the tasks of film analysis and interpretation to renewed visibility. By prioritizing the viewers experience of filmic temporality, and offering a rich vocabulary for describing this exchange, Carruthers articulates a new sphere of theoretical inquiry that invites film viewers (and readers) to participate. Lee Carruthers makes an original and powerful argument about the importance of timeliness, providing a much-needed alternative approach to that of Deleuze to thinking seriously about the temporality of cinema. Her chapters, including one on The Tree of Life, are masterful criticism. William Rothman, author of Must We Kill the Thing We Love? Emersonian Perfectionism and the Films of Alfred Hitchcock

Download or read book Book of Rhymes written by Adam Bradley and published by Civitas Books. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners. Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

Download or read book Rhymes in the Flow written by Macklin Smith and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its global popularity, rap has received little scholarly attention in terms of its poetic features. Rhymes in the Flow systematically analyzes the poetics (rap beats, rhythms, rhymes, verse and song structures) of many notable rap songs to provide new insights on rap artistry and performance. Defining and describing the features of what rappers commonly call flow, the authors establish a theory of the rap line as they trace rap’s deepest roots and stylistic evolution—from Anglo-Saxon poetry to Lil Wayne—and contextualize its complex poetics. Rhymes in the Flow helps explain rap’s wide appeal by focusing primarily on its rhythmic and thematic power, while also claiming its historical, cultural, musical, and poetic importance.
Download or read book I Am Hip Hop written by Andrew J. Rausch and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is Hip-Hop?" In order to answer this question, author Andrew J. Rausch interviewed 24 individuals whose creative expressions are intimately associated with the world of hip-hop music and culture. Those interviewed include emcees, DJs, producers, graffiti artists, poets, and journalists. Topics of these conversations cover the careers of each of these people and their contributions/affiliations with hip-hop, as well as their views on different trends within the music. Intended as a celebration of hip-hop music and culture, this collection of interviews ranges from the up-and-coming (Akrobatik, Rob Kelly) to the legendary (Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane). Also interviewed are Eric B., Black Sheep Dres, Chip Fu, Michael Cirelli, Daddy-O, DJ JS-1, dream hampton, Kokane, Kool Keith, Kool Rock Ski, Keith Murray, 9th Wonder, Paradime, R.A. the Rugged Man, Sadat X, Shock G, Special Ed, Spinderella, Sticky Fingaz, and Young MC. Because many of these artists worked and performed in the so-called "golden age" of hip-hop, they offer insights on the merits and problems of what hip-hop has grown into today. From their candid observations, the reader will understand how each of these men and women have contributed to the culture and how each, in his or her own way, can rightly answer "I AM hip-hop."
