Book excerpt: The analysis of biblical rhetoric has been developed only in the last 250 years. The first half of this book outlines the history of the method known as rhetorical analysis in biblical studies, illustrated by numerous texts. The work of Lowth (who focused on 'parallelism'), Bengel (who drew attention to 'chiasmus'), Jebb and Boys (the method's real founders at the turn of the ninteenth century) and Lund (the chief exponent in the mid-twentieth century) are all discussed, as is the current full blooming of rhetorical analysis. The second half of the book is a systematic account of the method, testing it on Psalms 113 and 146, on the first two chapters of Amos, and many other texts, especially from Luke. Translated by Luc Racaut.

Book Understanding Political Persuasion Linguistic and Rhetorical Analysis

Download or read book Understanding Political Persuasion Linguistic and Rhetorical Analysis written by Douglas Mark Ponton and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book builds on the consolidated research field of Political Discourse Analysis and attempts to provide an introduction suitable for adoption amongst a readership wishing to understand some of the principles underlying such research, and above all to appreciate how the tools of discourse analysis might be applied to actual texts. It summarises some of the work that has been done in this field by authorities such as Halliday, Fairclough, Wodak, Chilton, Van Dijk, Martin, Van Leeuwen and others to provide the would-be analyst with practical ideas for their own research. Naturally, this would not be the first time that such a handbook or introductory reference book has been proposed. Fairclough himself recently produced one; however, his work, simply entitled Political Discourse Analysis, inevitably includes theoretical insights from his own research. The beginning analyst can, at times, experience a sense of bewilderment at the mass of theoretical writing in linguistics, in the search for some practical, usable tools. I explain a variety of such tools, demonstrating their usefulness in application to the analysis of a number of political speeches, from different historical periods and diverse social contexts. The author’s hope is that would-be students of political rhetoric, of whatever level and from a variety of research areas, will be able to pick up this book and find tools and techniques that will assist them in actual work on texts. Naturally, it is also hoped that they will be inspired to follow up the suggestions for further reading which they will find in the bibliography.

Book Understanding Rhetoric

Download or read book Understanding Rhetoric written by Elinor A. McNeel and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Book of Student Writing from Rhetoric and Composition People avoid writing because of the fear and anxiety they have about writing. Prior to attending Penn State and taking a Rhetoric and Composition class, I was one of those people. Depending on the style and the way the material is presented, you will find yourself creating essays, outlining speeches, etc., without giving it a second thought. After my very first English course at Penn State, I was over the fear and was able to not only pass the course with an A but was approached by my Effective Speech and Communications professor requesting my papers be used as samples in her upcoming courses. You will find essays in this book on subject matter that will motivate and improve the writers skills in the following areas: rhetorical analysis, position arguments, proposals, understanding the rhetorical situation, and many more. Also included are a couple of speeches that I thoroughly enjoyed preparing.

Book Rhetorical Analysis Lloyd F Bitzer s The Rhetorical Situation

Download or read book Rhetorical Analysis Lloyd F Bitzer s The Rhetorical Situation written by Gabriel Sutton and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Rhetoric / Elocution / Oratory, grade: Undergraduate 300 Level, The University of North Carolina at Wilmington, course: Rhetorical Theory Since 1900, language: English, abstract: In his 1969 academic thesis entitled The Rhetorical Situation, Professor Lloyd F. Bitzer examines the role that context plays in crafting effective discourse. This essay is an analysis of that thesis. Bitzer states that the rhetorical situation determines which rhetorical devices to use, the type of diction that is appropriate and the complexity of the discourse. He discusses the relationship between language and argument; language plays a primitive role, one that links human activity to the message. The essay ends by differentiating between rhetoric and the craft of persuasion.

Book Rhetoric in Detail

Download or read book Rhetoric in Detail written by Barbara Johnstone and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleven studies in this volume illustrate and advance the synthesis of discourse analysis with rhetorical studies. Rhetoric in Detail shows how a variety of techniques from discourse analysis can be useful in studying such concerns as agency, legitimation, controversy, and style, and how concepts from rhetoric including genre and figuration can enrich the work of discourse analysts. The authors' research sites range from government commissions, political speeches, newspaper reports and letters to interviews and conversations in beauty salons and online. Methodological overviews interspersed throughout survey critical discourse analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, grounded theory, computer-aided corpus analysis, narrative analysis, and participant observation and provide suggestions for further reading. Rhetoric in Detail is an invaluable source for rhetoricians looking for systematic, grounded ways of approaching new, more vernacular sites for rhetorical discourse and for discourse analysts interested in seeing what they can learn from the tradition and practice of rhetorical analysis.

Book The Persuasive Appeal of the Chronicler

Download or read book The Persuasive Appeal of the Chronicler written by Rodney K. Duke and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on ancient rhetorical principles, this work brings a novel approach to the exploration of the literary dynamics of the books of Chronicles. Contrary to those who have viewed the Chronicler as ploddy and dull, Duke maintains that the Chronicler understood the historiographical demands of his day. Utilizing traditions, genealogical material, speeches of authoritative characters and paradigmatic portrayal of events and characters, and moving from a cautious inductive presentation of his thesis to a more propositional form of argumentation, the Chronicler retold the story of Israel with skill and artistry.

Book New Testament Interpretation Through Rhetorical Criticism

Download or read book New Testament Interpretation Through Rhetorical Criticism written by George A. Kennedy and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Testament Interpretation through Rhetorical Criticism provides readers of the Bible with an important tool for understanding the Scriptures. Based on the theory and practice of Greek rhetoric in the New Testament, George Kennedy's approach acknowledges that New Testament writers wrote to persuade an audience of the truth of their messages. These writers employed rhetorical conventions that were widely known and imitated in the society of the times. Sometimes confirming but often challenging common interpretations of texts, this is the first systematic study of the rhetorical composition of the New Testament. As a complement to form criticism, historical criticism, and other methods of biblical analysis, rhetorical criticism focuses on the text as we have it and seeks to discover the basis of its powerful appeal and the intent of its authors. Kennedy shows that biblical writers employed both "external" modes of persuasion, such as scriptural authority, the evidence of miracles, and the testimony of witnesses, and "internal" methods, such as ethos (authority and character of the speaker), pathos (emotional appeal to the audience), and logos (deductive and inductive argument in the text). In the opening chapter Kennedy presents a survey of how rhetoric was taught in the New Testament period and outlines a rigorous method of rhetorical criticism that involves a series of steps. He provides in succeeding chapters examples of rhetorical analysis, looking closely at the Sermon on the Mount, the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus' farewell to the disciples in John's Gospel, the distinctive rhetoric of Jesus, the speeches in Acts, and the approach of Saint Paul in Second Corinthians, Thessalonians, Galatians, and Romans.

Book Rhetorical Criticism

Download or read book Rhetorical Criticism written by Edwin Black and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Speech Communication Association Award for Distinguished Scholarship This is a book that, almost singlehandedly, freed scholars from the narrow constraints of a single critical paradigm and created a new era in the study of public discourse. Its original publication in 1965 created a spirited controversy. Here Edwin Black examines the assumptions and principles underlying neo-Aristotelian theory and suggests an alternative approach to criticism, centering around the concept of the "rhetorical transaction." This new edition, containing Black's new introduction, will enable students and scholars to secure a copy of one of the most influential books ever written in the field.
