Book Rhetoric and the Study of Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rhetoric and the Study of Literature Classic Reprint written by Alfred M. Hitchcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric and the Study of Literature This volume, designed for use in the last two years of the secondary school course, contains such textbook matter as I think is needed to carry out these three ideas in an economical way: a brief review of rhetoric, including a little vocabulary of terms commonly employed in talking about books; a general classification and discussion of the various literary forms - fiction, drama, essay, etc. - to gether with suggestions both general and specific concern ing how these forms may be studied; a summary by periods of English literature, containing what I think is the minimum that the pupil should know upon graduation such information as an intelligent man or woman surely ought to possess. I have not hesitated to include, in revised form, some matter that has already appeared in an earlier manual; but the exercises and questions, which form a considerable part of the whole, are new - new and yet old, for little has gone into this book that has not been tried out repeatedly in class room. Indeed I have neither the courage nor the inclination to put forth in textbook form anything experimental. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Rhetorical Analysis: Studies in Style and Designed Invention, Designed to Accompany the Author's Practical Elements of Rhetoric The selections that make up this Handbook, while fairly representative, so far as they go, of the authors from whose works they are taken, are not to be regarded as introductions to the authors as such, still less as studies in the history and development of English prose literature. They are simply, as the title indicates, extracts to be analyzed, in style and structure, for the purpose of forming, from actual examples, some intelligent conception of what the making of good literature involves: taken from, the best writers, because it is safer to study models of excellence than examples of error; taken from several writers, because it is not wise to make an exclusive model of any one author's work, however excellent; and taken for the most part from recent writers, not because these are better than writers of earlier time, but because they are more likely to illustrate the usages practically needed in this century. "I think, as far as my observation has gone," says Mr. John Morley, "that men will do better for reaching precision by studying carefully and with an open mind and a vigilant eye the great models of writing, than by excessive practice of writing on their own account." In a general way such testimony as this to the value of the study of literary models is universal. Biographies of authors are full of it; reports, gleaned from every available source, of "books which have influenced me," and accounts of the great literary works which have been at eminent writers' elbows, constant companions and inspirers, are eagerly read and treasured for their helpfulness to workers' who aspire to like eminence. But while the question of the what is so copiously answered, the question of the how remains for the most part unapproached. Book Rhetoric and Poetry in the Renaissance

Download or read book Rhetoric and Poetry in the Renaissance written by Donald Lemen Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric and Poetry in the Renaissance: A Study of Rhetorical Terms in English, Renaissance Literary Criticism IN this essay I undertake to trace the influence of classical rhetoric on the criticisms of poetry published in England between 1553 and 1641. This influence is most readily recognized in the use by English renaissance writers on literary criticism of the terminology of classical rhetoric. But the rhetorical terminology in most cases carried with it rhetorical thinking, traces of whose influence persist in criticism of poetry to the present day. The essay is divided into two parts. Part First treats of the influence of rhetoric on the general theory of poetry within the period, and Part Second of its influence on the renaissance formulation of the purpose of poetry. This division is called for not by the logic of the material, but by history and convenience. A third phase of the influence of rhetorical terminology I have already touched on in an article on The Requirements of a Poet,1 where I have Shown that historically the renaissance ideal of the nature and education of a poet is in part derived from classical rhetoric. Book Writing and Speaking Vol 2

Download or read book Writing and Speaking Vol 2 written by Charles Sears Baldwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing and Speaking, Vol. 2: A Text-Book of Rhetoric The separate publication of Part II in this volume is intended to supply consecutive advanced study for school classes that have already mastered the principles of composi tion in simpler applications. It deals with the library, both for the compilation of facts and for the study of literary form; but its main object is to lead a student's own writing and speaking forward by making it appeal to all his widening interests. In order to indicate the plan of the whole work, as well as to suggest profitable lines of review for those who have studied the elements in another text-book, the topics of Part I, which is also published separately, have been retained in the table of contents (pages xv - xviii). The few refer cucos to Part I in the text are for the convenience of students who have used that book; the summaries and specific exer cises of review, mainly for those who have used another. But the present volume, given any systematic elementary study, is complete in itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rhetoric

Download or read book Rhetoric written by Austin Phelps and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric: Its Theory The author of a treatise on the Latin language, published in the fifteenth century, commenced his work with this announcement: "This volume contains nothing which has ever been said by any one else." His production ought to have been a revelation from heaven. A treatise on a language a thousand years old can not be valuable, and yet strictly original. Very similar must be the criticism of a treatise on English style. It must be indebted to much which has preceded it in literary research. That which "has ever been said" must determine largely what remains to be said; and that which remains to be said must consist largely of variations upon that which has been said. In the present volume I have not scrupled to use any material which has seemed to me adapted to my purpose. I have appropriated principles of which no one knows the origin; I have employed illustrations, some of which belong to the common stock of rhetorical discussion; I have expressed opinions of books and authors, some of which I owe to experts whom the literary world honors as authorities. In exercising this liberty, I have availed myself of all the standard treatises on grammar, on the English language, on English literature, and on other national literatures, which have been within my reach. Book excerpt: The Writing & Rhetoric series method employs fluent reading, careful listening, models for imitation, and progressive steps. It assumes that students learn the best by reading excellent, whole-story examples of litereature and by growing their skills through imitatiion. Each excercise is intended to impart a skill (or tool) that can be employed in all kids of writing and speaking. The excercises are arranged from simple to more complex. What's more, the exercises are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired preceding exercises. This series is a step-by-step apprenticeship in the art of writing and rhetoric. Fable, the first book in the Writing & Rhetoric series, teaches students the practice of close reading and comprehension, summarizing a story aloud and in writing, and amplification of a story through description and dialogue. Students learn how to identify different kinds of stories; determine the beginning, middle, and end of stories; recognize point of view; and see analogous situations, among other essential tools. The Writing & Rhetoric series recovers a proven method of teaching writing, using fables to teach beginning writers the craft of writing well.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metaphor: A Study in the Psychology of Rhetoric That all existing definitions of metaphor are practically identical, means that Aristotle's conception of this figure has simply repeated itself in each succeeding generation of rhetorical treatises. To him metaphor was essentially a transference of meaning from one word to another over the bridge of analogy.2 Later definitions only phrase somewhat differ ently the same idea. Metaphor is the use of a word denoting one object to indicate another object resembling the first in some particular; or it is the comparison of two objects; or it is the affirmation of the identity of two objects.2 In spite of superficial diversities, it is evident that all these definitions come in the end to the same thing. Each is based upon a recognition of the composite character of. The metaphor. Each resolves the figure into at least two parts. There is the thing meant and the thing said; the object of which the writer is speaking and the object to Which it is compared. What rhetorician has not seen that when one speaks of oak-trees as green-robed senators 3 two distinct elements are involved, (1) the trees and (2) the senators, to which they are compared? And in addition to these two constituents a third is often noted, the resemblance which exists between the two objects and justi fies their comparison. Book Steps in English

Download or read book Steps in English written by Thos; C. Blaisdell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steps in English: Composition Rhetoric This book aims to teach young people to write effectively by having them write. It furnishes them with models from the masters, and asks them to use their own experiences as working material. Further, in the second part it develops a plan to teach them to write accurately, by training them to recognize, and thus to avoid, their errors. That his own hours are full of experiences adapted to literary expression is made known to the pupil by the study of literature in its relation to life. Of these experiences he has definite knowledge, and about them he can think clearly; and clear thinking, which comes only from clear knowing, usually results in ready and forceful expression. The book, in addition, lays a foundation for the appreciation of literature. To profit by the master writers the pupil must be able to recognize the value of their works. Accordingly he is here taught that literature is full of suggestion, and he is made to understand the various devices by which an author conveys this suggestion. When these methods have been discovered and sufficiently illustrated, the learner is asked to use them in writing about familiar experiences. Thus he is given a higher standard than a properly punctuated, rhetorical statement of facts, with the result that his theme work becomes a vital thing, - a pleasure, not a task. This book at first calls for compositions of only a few paragraphs in length. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Readings in Classical Rhetoric

Download or read book Readings in Classical Rhetoric written by Thomas W. Benson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric -- the theory of oral discourse -- affected and indeed pervaded all aspects of classical thought. Bearing the stamp of its impact were the Homeric hymns, the Iliad and the Odyssey, Aeschylus' Eumenides, the great dramatic tragedies, the elegiac and lyric poetry, and the literature of the Romans, often formed in the Greek image. The rhetorical notion of probability had direct implications for the classical philosopher and mathematician as it does today. Departments of speech, English, philosophy and classics provide the key centers of interest in the new and the classical rhetorics. Despite the considerable enthusiasm for the study of rhetoric, no single work provides large selections of primary materials written by the classical rhetoricians themselves. Until now, only secondary sources containing tiny excerpts, or entire and expensive translations of the ancient rhetorical writings were available. This large anthology of primary readings of the classical rhetoricians in translation fills this large gap. The continuity and coherence of ancient rhetorical traditions is emphasized by organizing large excerpts into the topical divisions that later classical writers agreed upon. The first unit of this anthology sets forth major issues in the definition and scope of rhetoric, and its appropriate place among other modes of thought and discourse. Parts 2 through 5 are organized according to the traditional canons of oratory -- invention, disposition, style, memory, and delivery. In organizing the readings this way, the editors represent both the philosophical and theoretical issues in rhetoric and its pragmatic functions as a craft for making effective discourse. Selecting excerpts that illustrate the major conflicts within the unfolding tradition enables a sampling of not only the major points of view, but also the arguments supporting them. This volume includes selections not only from writings of the standard classical rhetoricians but also from less typical works which have special value. The editors have utilized the best accessible translations while remaining absolutely faithful to their texts.

Download or read book Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Hugh Blair and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, Vol. 1 of 2 With the same intention they are now published; and, therefore, the form of Lectures, in which they were at first composed, is still retained. The author gives them to the world, neither as a work wholly original, nor as a compilation from the writings of others. On every subject contained in them, he has thought for himself. He consulted his own ideas and reflections: and a great part of what will be found in these Lectures is entirely his own. At the same time, he availed himself of the ideas and reflections of others, as far as he thought them proper to be adopted. To proceed in this manner was his duty as a public professor. It was incumbent on him, to convey to his pupils all the knowledge that could improve them; to deliver not merely what was new, but what might be useful, from whatever quarter it came. He hopes, that to such as are studying to cultivate their taste, to form their style, or to prepare themselves for public speaking or composition, his Lectures will afford a more comprehensive view of what relates to these subjects, than, as far as he knows, is to be received from any one book in our language. Book The Science of Discourse

Download or read book The Science of Discourse written by Arnold Tompkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Discourse: A Rhetoric for High Schools and Colleges Man continually speaks or writes, reads or gives audience. Rhetoric deals with all these universal and lifelong processes; hence, its practical importance is obvious and emphatic. This study, however, got its name from the one exercise of speaking - from the Greek rhetor, speaker - because, in the political life of the Greeks, so much depended on the art of public address. If this study should be named now, and after the most effective means of formal communication, the term would come from reading or writing; and it would not matter which, as each presupposes the other. But we care now nothing for the name except to insist, in obedience to the demands of both life and logic, on its extension over all phases of the discourse process. Until quite recently it has been customary to organize this subject under the literal meaning of the word, attaching it to the chair of oratory in college and confining its practical value to those engaged in public address. Thus, as with the Greeks and Romans, it became the hidden art of the few by which fickle masses were to be swayed. But now it is not so much the swaying of masses that is needed as masses who can critically estimate and appreciate the utterances of others. And these utterances are comparatively seldom made now in the form of public address, but in that of the book, the newspaper, and the magazine.
