Book Optical Metrology with Interferometry

Download or read book Optical Metrology with Interferometry written by Dahi Ghareab Abdelsalam Ibrahim and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accurate measurements of surface topography are becoming important to many applications in both engineering and science. Optical interferometry is considered a preferable technique for featuring accurate 3D surface profiling since it is non-contacting, non-destructive and highly accurate. In combination with computers and other electronic devices, optical interferometry has become faster, more reliable, more convenient and more robust. There is now a wealth of new optical interferometry techniques on the market, or being developed in academia, that can measure surface topography with high precision. Each method has both its strong points and its limitations. This book explains in detail the basics of optical interferometry, their common language, generic features and limitations, and their simulation and uncertainties. Moreover, it provides an introduction to new frontiers in optical interferometry, including terahertz technology and optical frequency combs.

Book Digital Techniques for Coherent Optical Metrology

Download or read book Digital Techniques for Coherent Optical Metrology written by Andrew John Heaton Sutton and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interferometric optical metrology provides a mechanism for metering displacement against the wavelength of light. Whilst extreme levels of sensitivity can be reached, the difficulties in constructing and operating measurement interferometers makes widespread adoption of optical metrology difficult outside of tightly controlled environments. Taking advantage of the recent explosion in processing power available in cheap digital signal processing systems, this thesis investigates means by which optical interferometry may be simplified and improved by shifting optical complexity into 'behind-the-scenes' signal processing. Specifically, this thesis investigates the enhancement of two systems: a macroscopic inter-spacecraft ranging system capable of measuring the separation between two spacecraft to with 0.06m RMS and a microscopic metrology technique capable of simultaneously measuring multiple displacement signals through a common detector with pm sensitivity. The first system investigated is a macroscopic ranging system for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) gravitational wave detector. LISA comprises a triangular constellation of three spacecraft in an earth-trailing orbit around the sun where each pair of spacecraft exchange laser beams to form an interferometer. Whilst the individual spacecraft are separated by distances of 5 million kilometres, their onboard measurements must be synchronised to 1m equivalent distance in order to properly exploit the laser-frequency-noise-cancelling properties of Time Delay Interferometry. This synchronisation is provided by an inter-spacecraft ranging system. The LISA baseline design proposes the use of Pseudo-Random-Noise (PRN) Ranging to measure the range between spacecraft, allowing synchronisation. This thesis presents the first comprehensive analysis of the proposed this ranging algorithm. We find that the measurement is limited by interference from the modulation upon each spacecraft's outgoing laser. This hypothesis was verified by implementing and experimentally testing a prototype PRN Ranging within an optical interferometry test bed using prototype LISA systems. In this environment, the PRN Ranging system demonstrated a range error of 0.19m RMS, surpassing the baseline requirement of 1 m. We also demonstrate an extension to the PRN ranging system to cancel the dominant interference noise via a feedforward subtraction, which improves the ranging error to 0.06 m. This improvement in performance provides margin over requirements for other laser systems. The second component of the thesis work presents a novel optical interferometry technique, Digitally Enhanced Homodyne Interferometry. The technique provides the ability to independently monitor multiple displacement sensors based upon the delay of their interrogating light. Measurement systems are designed and presented before verification in an optical interferometer. The technique is shown to independently and simultaneously measure the optical phase of four separate paths through the interferometer using a single detector. A real-time readout of the interferometer's displacement achieved a record displacement sensitivity for Digitally Enhance Interferometry of 1pm/rt. Hz above 2 Hz. Limitations to the measurement's linearity are also discussed within the context of the applied PRN modulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of optical metrology offers a wealth of both practical and theoretical accomplishments, and can cite any number of academic papers recording such. However, while several books covering specific areas of optical metrology do exist, until the pages herein were researched, written, and compiled, the field lacked for a comprehensive handbook, one providing an overview of optical metrology that covers practical applications as well as fundamentals. Carefully designed to make information accessible to beginners without sacrificing academic rigor, the Handbook of Optical Metrology: Principles and Applications discusses fundamental principles and techniques before exploring practical applications. With contributions from veterans in the field, as well as from up-and-coming researchers, the Handbook offers 30 substantial and well-referenced chapters. In addition to the introductory matter, forward-thinking descriptions are included in every chapter that make this a valuable reference for all those involved with optical metrology.

Download or read book Interferometry written by W. H. Steel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-12-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlarged and updated in 1983, this is the second edition of Dr Steel's popular textbook on interferometry. The text has been revised throughout and major additions have been made to reflect the phenomenal growth of laser techniques and applications. The book provides a general treatment that brings together the many different applications of the interference of light waves, light being used in its most general sense to include all electromagnetic radiation. The applications can cover precise measurement of length, the testing of optical components against a computed hologram, measurements of atmospheric pollution by infrared spectroscopy and many of the methods of radio astronomy and the measurement of size of visible stars. These apparently unrelated methods have a common theory, which the book presents and extends to each main field of application. It shows workers in one field how their problems relate to those in other fields, where they may have been solved already. The book will be found useful by anyone whose work involves one of the many applications of interferometric techniques.

Book Phase Estimation in Optical Interferometry

Download or read book Phase Estimation in Optical Interferometry written by Pramod Rastogi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase Estimation in Optical Interferometry covers the essentials of phase-stepping algorithms used in interferometry and pseudointerferometric techniques. It presents the basic concepts and mathematics needed for understanding the phase estimation methods in use today. The first four chapters focus on phase retrieval from image transforms using a single frame. The next several chapters examine the local environment of a fringe pattern, give a broad picture of the phase estimation approach based on local polynomial phase modeling, cover temporal high-resolution phase evaluation methods, and present methods of phase unwrapping. The final chapter discusses experimental imperfections that are liable to adversely influence the accuracy of phase measurements. Responding to the push for the deployment of novel technologies and fast-evolving techniques, this book provides a framework for understanding various modern phase estimation methods. It also helps readers get a comparative view of the performance and limitations of the approaches.
