They were choosing between the acreage allotment program such as used before this year and the newer base acreage program offered this past year. Only 61 percent of those voting favored the base-acreage plan for '57. As two thirds of those voting had to approve to make that program effective and only one-third was required for the older allotment plan, the latter plan was chosen. As Secretary Benson pointed out the decision was properly the corn farmers' own. He promised that the Department would do all in its power to administer the program constructively. He indicated, however, that there may be serious problems. In commenting on the situation, he said: A prompt and searching appraisal of the entire corn situation, and.of program relation ships, is needed at this time. Jake Hess, a Hereford breeder of note, and other principals of the ride fo: show outfit took their turns on camera standing-up. Hess figured the ride a fair exchange for a chance to invite viewers to ride (horseless carriage-style) over to mclean, Texas, for the annual rodeo and horse show. Cotton John figured real cow boys, their horses and chuck wagon, provided the right elements for a good show. Everyone seemed right pleased. This was confirmed in tests when resistant larvae absorbed more than 6 times as much radioactive ddt as nonresistant larvae of the same species, yet 20 percent fewer resistant larvae died. When ddt was used in a lighter dosage, resistant larvae absorbed twice as much of the chemical as nonresistant ones, with only 11 percent mortality, compared with 100 percent mortality for the nonresistant larvae.
