'halévy a avancé, dans un mémoire lu à l'académie des inscriptions, que l'idée de l'immortalité avait tenu une grande place dans les croyances nationales chez tous les peuples de race sémitique. Dans le débat qui eut lieu alors sur cette ques tion, les monuments flgurés ne jouèrent aucun rôle; mais une circonstance que présente un des sarcophages rapportés de Sidon et d'aradus au musée du Louvre par M. Renan circonstance que m'a fait remarquer ce qu' ofl'rent d'ana logue les monuments funéraires de la Grèce et de l'ètrurie me paraît de nature à fournir un argument nouveau à l'appui de lathèse de m.halévy, au moins pour ce qui regarde la Phénicie. Sur des vases grecs peints on voit souvent des stèles funéraires ornées de bandelettes de pourpre et de petits flacons à parfums ces flacons se retrouvent, aussi bien que des couronnes de fleurs, à la main des morts qui sont couchés, quelquefois endormis, sur les tombes étrusques. Remarquons encore que sur nombre de stèles égyptiennes et de stèles grecques et lyciennes des anciens temps, les défunts sont flgurés respirant le parfum d'une fleur. Or le flacon à parfum représente la mème idée que la fleur odorane. Sur les sarcophages phéniciens les morts sont étendus sur le dos, les yeux ouverts pourtant, ce qui indique, si je ne me trompe, que dans le repos ils vivent encore, et l'un d'eux tient à la main le petit flacon à parfum des stèles grecques et des tombes étrusques. Un pareil assemblage ne peut etre qualifie de constitution Il est vrai que de tout temps les qadis ont cite des passages du Qoran, mais ils ne peuvent les utiliser ainsi que sous le couvert de l'autorite des ouvrages juridiques par lesquels ils sont lies; tout comme un theologien catholique ne pourra de river des Ecritures les lociprobantes d'un dogme qu'en suivant la loi de l'eglise.
