An overview of the Jansenist quarrel and of the activities of the Jesuits brings in the story of the struggle between Crown and Parlement, while an extended portrayal of the life of the Protestant and Jewish communities leads to the history of the debate on toleration, involving the Gallican Church in political interventions and controversy. Throughout the two volumes the rising forces of anticlericalism and the tensions within the ecclesiastical establishment have been recorded, and these themes come to their climax in a final section on the role played by churchmen in the coming of the Revolution.

Book excerpt: This book examines the history of a prominent castle lord of eleventh-century Anjou, a man who has been referred to in numerous works but has never been carefully studied. Robert the Burgundian was an Angevin knight whom the counts of Anjou allowed to amass enormous power on the northwestern march of Anjou. Until he departed for the First Crusade in 1098 Robert was the central figure in Count Fulk Rechin's court. In contrast with many studies of the period, this work finds that Robert spent a long career as a major supporter of the counts of Anjou, rather than as someone undermining their authority. The author calls into question what is known about "feudal anarchy" in the eleventh century and finds that Robert and his descendants were indeed loyal to the count and were able to maintain Angevin power. Remarkably, records of more than one hundred legal acts involving Robert, some based on his actual words, survive today. They reveal a richly textured life, establishing family connections, political alliances, and relations with the Church as Robert struggled to maintain his lands and position through invasion, civil war, and episcopal interdict. Of special interest is Robert's participation in the First Crusade after a personal visit by Pope Urban II, and his interaction with the counts and the effect this had on the development of the Angevin state. Venarde uncovers a largely unknown story of women's religious lives and puts female monasticism back in the mainstream of medieval ecclesiastical history. To chart the expansion of nunneries in France and England during the central Middle Ages, he presents statistics and narratives to describe growth in broad historical contexts, with special attention to social and economic change. Venarde explains that in the years 1000–1300 the number of nunneries within Europe grew tenfold. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries, religious institutions for women developed in a variety of ways, mostly outside the self-conscious reform movements that have been the traditional focus of monastic history. Not reforming monks but wandering preachers, bishops, and the women and men of local petty aristocracies made possible the foundation of new nunneries. In times of increased agrarian wealth, decentralization of power, and a shortage of potential spouses, many women decided to become nuns and proved especially adept at combining spiritual search with practical acumen. This era of expansion came to an end in the thirteenth century when forces of regulation and new economic realities reduced radically the number of new nunneries. Venarde argues that the factors encouraging and inhibiting monastic foundations for men and women were much more similar than scholars have previously assumed.
