When regarded as merely ancillary to English history, affairs in Ireland tend to have their real significance obscured or even misconceived, for a purely incidental consideration of the complex circumstances of Ireland in the latter half of the seventeenth century must inevitably fail to reveal all the hidden forces then at work. An attempt to supplement and qualify the results of historical research conducted from the standpoint of English history would therefore seem to be justifiable. By throwing light on the field of inquiry from another point of view we may perhaps aid in dispelling some of the shadows left by the workers who, turning the searchlight of investigation from an English centre of interest, have thrown but slanting beams upon the problems of Ireland. On the other hand, I am not unmindful of the special contributions - many of them of great value and interest, e.g. Klopp's Fall des Hauses Stuart - which have been made to the history of Ireland during the troubled quarter of a century (1688-1714) with which I deal. Drawing on such previously unpublished sources as the Irish Department of Defense's Military History Bureau, the author paints a broad picture of the people and the key events in the Irish struggle for independence. The book also breaks new ground in presenting much of the behind the scenes debate within the British Government in the prosecution of its policies in response to the revolt in Ireland. British official frustration provoked by the acceptance of D���¡il Eireann by the majority of the Irish people and the independent institutions it sought to set in place is also explicitly chronicled. New light is shed on the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations as well as on the divisions within Irish nationalism before and indeed afterwards which culminated in the Irish Civil War. Book excerpt: This book is based on original research into intimidation and violence directed at civilians by combatants during the revolutionary period in Ireland, considering this from the perspectives of the British, the Free State and the IRA. The book combines qualitative and quantitative approaches, and focusses on County Kerry, which saw high levels of violence. It demonstrates that violence and intimidation against civilians was more common than clashes between combatants and that the upsurge in violence in 1920 was a result of the deployment of the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries, particularly in the autumn and winter of that year. Despite the limited threat posed by the IRA, the British forces engaged in unprecedented and unprovoked violence against civilians. This study stresses the increasing brutality of the subsequent violence by both sides. The book shows how the British had similar methods and views as contemporary counter-revolutionary groups in Europe. IRA violence, however, was, in part, an attempt to impose homogeneity as, beneath the Irish republican narrative of popular approval, there lay a recognition that universal backing was never in fact present. The book is important reading for students and scholars of the Irish revolution, the social history of Ireland and inter-war European violence.
