Bureaucratic Culture and Escalating World Problems, and Saving Society. In addition to visible problems like war and terrorism with weapons of mass destruction that are becoming ever more threatening, there are relatively invisible problems. For example, there is an increasing gap between what people throughout the world want--including a decent standard of living and freedom from patterns of hatred like racism, sexism and ageism--and what they are in fact able to get. There is, then, an increasing aspirations-fulfillment gap, largely produced by the "revolution of rising expectations" over the past five centuries. Political leaders who attempt to confront problems can only make limited progress on them, largely because of the failure of social scientists to integrate their knowledge and thus yield the understanding of these complex problems that is required.

Hessen was born a Jewish subject of the Russian Czar in the Ukraine, participated in the October Revolution and was executed in the Soviet Union at the beginning of the purges. Grossmann was born a Jewish subject of the Austro-Hungarian Kaiser in Poland and served as an Austrian of?cer in the First World War; afterwards he was forced to return to Poland and then because of his revolutionary political activities to emigrate to Germany; with the rise to power of the Nazis he had to ?ee to France and then Americawhilehisfamily,whichremainedinEurope,perishedinNaziconcentration camps. Our own acquaintance with the work of these two authors is also indebted to historical context (under incomparably more fortunate circumstances): the revival of Marxist scholarship in Europe in the wake of the student movement and the p- fessionalization of history of science on the Continent. We hope that under the again very different conditions of the early twenty-?rst century these texts will contribute to the further development of a philosophically informed socio-historical approach to the study of science.

Book excerpt: We began our work in right and in serious earnest in the year 2005, November 14th, 2005 to be precise when children’s day is celebrated all over India in commemoration of the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. The underlying philosophy of our work however, stretches back to the early 1990’s, even the mid 1980’s, when we faced a great deal of cognitive dissonance in many of our endeavours and daily walks of life due to a constant exposure to, and a bombardment by, a large number of philosophies and ideas from different sources, both human and non-human. In the year 2005, particularly after the aforesaid date, we had reached out to several leading lights and luminaries in the fields of science, religion, philosophy and spirituality with a great deal of hope, to meaningfully engage with them and elicit their own pet theories, proposals and viewpoints on various issues and topics. We had hoped that this would also help us in our own voyage and journey of discovery. The results were indeed startling; there was a wide variation in viewpoints based on the scholar in question’s own religious, linguistic and nationalistic affiliation, and loyalties. Therefore, the age of ideology has still not formally or conceptually ended; ending this can change many fundamental equations at a grassroots level, and can make life better for all of us living in different parts of the world. As a matter of fact, Eurocentric biases in various fields of the social sciences has only served to throw up counter-reactions, and exacerbate ideological differences. Intellectualism is also still weak in general, particularly in developing countries, particularly owing to the following factors..........................

In Revolution and Disenchantment Fadi A. Bardawil redescribes for our present how an earlier generation of revolutionaries, the 1960s Arab New Left, addressed this question. Bardawil excavates the long-lost archive of the Marxist organization Socialist Lebanon and its main theorist, Waddah Charara, who articulated answers in their political practice to fundamental issues confronting revolutionaries worldwide: intellectuals as vectors of revolutionary theory; political organizations as mediators of theory and praxis; and nonemancipatory attachments as impediments to revolutionary practice. Drawing on historical and ethnographic methods and moving beyond familiar reception narratives of Marxist thought in the postcolony, Bardawil engages in "fieldwork in theory" that analyzes how theory seduces intellectuals, cultivates sensibilities, and authorizes political practice. Throughout, Bardawil underscores the resonances and tensions between Arab intellectual traditions and Western critical theory and postcolonial theory, deftly placing intellectuals from those traditions into a much-needed conversation.

In A Social Revolution, Kevan Harris convincingly demonstrates how they are wrong. Previous studies ignore the forceful consequences of three decades of social change following the 1979 revolution. Today, more people in the country are connected to welfare and social policy institutions than to any other form of state organization. In fact, much of Iran’s current political turbulence is the result of the success of these social welfare programs, which have created newly educated and mobilized social classes advocating for change. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted in Iran between 2006 and 2011, Harris shows how the revolutionary regime endured though the expansion of health, education, and aid programs that have both embedded the state in everyday life and empowered its challengers.
