Book excerpt: In every era the church needs revival—certainly today as much as ever. And in the heart of every committed Christian there is the longing for personal revival—to know the quality and depths of spiritual reality, and the presence of God in one's personal life. This was the deepest desire of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, one of the great 20th-century Bible expositors. It was also the purpose behind this series of messages which were first given on the 100th anniversary of the Great Revival which started in Wales, and swept across England and throughout the United States and to the far corners of the world. As Dr. Lloyd-Jones recognized, it is a rare time in the history of the church when there is a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit— and a time of special interest of every Christian who longs for revival today. As Dr. J. I. Packer writes in his foreword, Dr. Lloyd-Jones believed in "the necessity of revival—that is, a quickening divine visitation—as the only vent that can avert ultimate spiritual disaster. The thrustful urgency of the sermons in this book testifies to the depth of his conviction that without revival in the church there is really no hope for the Western world at all." Dr. Lloyd-Jones deftly draws principles from the lives of Old and New Testament characters as well as expounding some of the great prayers of the Bible. Clearly and forcefully, he presents a masterful exposition of the circumstances accompanying revival in the past, why each generation needs it, and how it will come about today. We must come to the sovereign God, forsake our sin, and wait upon Him for this special, essential outpouring. God, bring us revival!

Book excerpt: Licensed to preach at the age of twelve and ordained at fifteen, Havner spent a lifetime calling people to repentance. A popular revivalist known for his homespun storytelling and memorable wordplay, Havner boldly proclaimed the Word of God for seventy-three years. The author of more than thirty books, Havner's sermons are favorites among pastors who find his style refreshing, his quotes memorable, and his message convincing. In this collection of ten revival sermons, Havner's hard-hitting words proclaim the biblical message of heaven, hell, sin, repentance, sacrifice, holiness, prayer, and the lordship of Christ--themes that resonate with as much relevance today as when Havner first preached them.

Yes, when every thing of a temporal nature seemed to be against them, they have been enabled to say with the prophet--" Although the fig-tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vine: the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat: the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stall; yet will I rejoice in the Lord; I will joy in the God of my salvation." Thank God, for that religion which can sustain us in the day of severest trial, and give us rich consolation amid scenes of deepest worldly sorrow! Which can lighten the heaviest burden, and sweeten the bitterest cup, and brighten the darkest scene; yea, which in the hour of deepest affliction, can give us " a young heaven begun below, and glory in the bud!" "The people here, will say," said the late venerated Moses Hoge, when dying in Philadelphia, away from his home--" the people here will say, ' Poor old man!' Why," exclaimed he, " I am the happiest man in Philadelphia!" " My dear sister," said I to a beloved member of my church, who was near her end--" my dear sister, how do you find yourself this morning?" Grasping my hand, with much emotion, she replied, "My dear pastor, I am in pain, in great pain; but O," continued she, " I am happy! I am happy! O, I am so happy!" "Jesus can make a dying bed Feel soft as downy pillows are!" O, let me but have grace to prove my own work--let me only have clear scriptural evidence that I am a Christian--a real Christian--a true child of God, and I am free to say, for one, I can be happy on a bed of straw--on a bed of affliction! on the rack! on the wheel! bound to the stake! or amid the flames of...

Book excerpt: A Revival Sermon is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by one of the most important Christian writers of all time. A devotional message of faith and hope for you. Charles Haddon (CH) Spurgeon,19 June 1834 - 31 January 1892) was a British Particular Baptist preacher. Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations, among whom he is known as the "Prince of Preachers". He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist , defending the Church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith understanding, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day. It is estimated that in his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people,Spurgeon was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was part of several controversies with the Baptist Union of Great Britain and later had to leave the denomination. In 1867, he started a charity organisation which is now called Spurgeon's and works globally. He also founded Spurgeon's College, which was named after him posthumously. Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Spurgeon produced powerful sermons of penetrating thought and precise exposition. His oratory skills held his listeners spellbound in the Metropolitan Tabernacle and many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature.
