Book excerpt: Deepak Lal outlines and assesses the validity of a set of beliefs about third world economic development that underlies the thinking of many politicians, bureaucrats, journalists, and academics in both developing and developed countries. In this book Deepak Lal outlines and assesses the validity of a set of beliefs about third world economic development that underlies the thinking of many politicians, bureaucrats, journalists, and academics in both developing and developed countries. He describes the various elements of this "Dirigiste Dogma" and shows how it inevitably breeds corruption. According to Lal, only a market-based liberal economic order can solve the age-old problem of structural mass poverty. Its significant institutional bases include transparent financial systems and sufficiently deep financial markets to allow the hedging of foreign currency risk, and either a floating or rigidly fixed exchange rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Beyond Reforms' argues that economic growth in developing countries is intrinsically tied to the dynamics of production structures, to the specific policies and institutions created to support it, and the creation of linkages among domestic firms and sectors. Avoiding macroeconomic instability is also essential. However, macroeconomic stability is not a sufficient condition for growth. The broader institutional context and the adequate provision of education and infrastructure are essential 'framework conditions,' but generally do not play a direct role in bringing about changes in the momentum of economic growth.

Book excerpt: Samuel Hollander's interpretation of Ricardo has attracted apoplectic responses from both Right and Left. This volume collects together the material needed to evaluate these responses. His basic position - that Ricardo stands in a continuous analytical line leading from Adam Smith to Alfred Marshall - is seen to antagonise both those who argue for a 'marginal revolution' and a sharp divide between classical and neo-classical economics, and those who want to champion Ricardo as a forerunner of Sraffa.
