Book Redemption Songs

Download or read book Redemption Songs written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An artist's book/zine of images by Theo Strasser, consisting of collaged black and white artwork overprinted on the title page and many other pages drawn from a copy of the London publisher Pickering & Inglis' hymnal "Redemption songs: a choice collection of one thousand hymns and choruses for evangelistic meetings, soloists, choirs, the home" (dating from the late 19th or early 20th century). The use of a religious work as a base for an altered photographic book may have been suggested by Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin's "Holy Bible" (2013), although Theo Strasser's Redemption Songs is a more oblique and personal selection, presented in a small stitched booklet with black card covers (the same size as the original, though with fewer pages), with the title stamped in silver and a cross stamped in red on the cover.

Download or read book Mek Some Noise written by Timothy Rommen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-04-11 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mek Some Noise", Timothy Rommen’s ethnographic study of Trinidadian gospel music, engages the multiple musical styles circulating in the nation’s Full Gospel community and illustrates the carefully negotiated and contested spaces that they occupy in relationship to questions of identity. By exploring gospelypso, jamoo ("Jehovah’s music"), gospel dancehall, and North American gospel music, along with the discourses that surround performances in these styles, he illustrates the extent to which value, meaning, and appropriateness are continually circumscribed and reinterpreted in the process of coming to terms with what it looks and sounds like to be a Full Gospel believer in Trinidad. The local, regional, and transnational implications of these musical styles, moreover, are read in relationship to their impact on belief (and vice versa), revealing the particularly nuanced poetics of conviction that drive both apologists and detractors of these styles. Rommen sets his investigation against a concisely drawn, richly historical narrative and introduces a theoretical approach which he calls the "ethics of style"—a model that privileges the convictions embedded in this context and that emphasizes their role in shaping the terms upon which identity is continually being constructed in Trinidad. The result is an extended meditation on the convictions that lie behind the creation and reception of style in Full Gospel Trinidad. Copub: Center for Black Music Research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most profound event in modern church history took place not in a cathedral but in a clapboard church in Los Angeles. A small congregation of mostly African American worshipers embraced the concept that New Testament signs and wonders were still available in the early twentieth century. Their dramatic spiritual revival, which became known as the Azusa Street Revival, attracted believers worldwide and launched the modern Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. This event forever changed Christian worship, music, and expression. In commemoration of Azusa Street's 100th anniversary, Jack Hayford tells the story, revealing how Christians are still experiencing its impact.
