Book excerpt: What is there about a dying church that brings glory to God? Mark Clifton's convicting answer is "Nothing." Because a local church is intended to represent the work of God in a community, when that church "loses it saltiness," not only is God's work pictured as irrelevant in that community, but also dishonor and disrepute may well become associated with God's name as a result. In Reclaiming Glory, Clifton draws not only upon his own burden for revitalizing dying churches but also upon years of church replanting experience to offer passionate counsel for how to breathe new life into a dying church . . . all for the glory of the God who is building his church upon the immovable rock of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Book Revitalizing Congregations

Download or read book Revitalizing Congregations written by William Avery and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are congregations inevitably stuck during a change of pastoral leadership? Or are there ways they can take advantage of this interim to grow and set new directions? Researcher and seminary professor William Avery tells us the stories of six congregations (from different denominations, regions of the country, settings, sizes, and ethnic and racial makeup) that attempted to revitalize their mission during this critical time of change and transition. As Loren Mead explains in the foreword, however, Avery does not tell congregational leaders “the way” to transformation through an interim. Rather, he offers detailed snapshots of congregations and their leaders trying to work their way through this potentially difficult time. He also shows how a trained interim pastor can make a difference in the ensuing effectiveness of the congregation. “These are stories about how faithful congregations have attempted to build toward and discover a leadership model that works for them,” Mead says, “These are stories from which your congregation can learn much.”

Book Revitalizing the Declining Church

Download or read book Revitalizing the Declining Church written by Desmond Barrett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standing in the small foyer of his first ministry assignment, Desmond Barrett prayed, “Lord send us someone new.” Each week the same eight to thirteen people walked into that tiny church, sat in the same pew, and spoke to the same handful of people content in where they found themselves. As the pastor Barrett questioned, doubted, and cried to himself, praying that God would turn around this church that was at death’s door. Death had not come to this once vibrant church overnight, but gradually as it seemed to have snuck up on them through deaths, families moving away, and a series of pastors over twenty years. A new young pastoral family with children was not going to change the trajectory of the church without the church willing to transform. The church was dying, but was it willing to do what it would take to grow again? This story has been played out countless times over the years. If you are a pastor of a dying and struggling church searching for hope, then this resource is for you. It consists of ten stories of churches who faced death and lived to tell the story.

Download or read book Revitalize 9Marks Journal written by Jonathan Leeman and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 9Marks Journal: RevitalizeChurch planting is a great thing, and there's no need to take anything away from it. But there should also be a default setting in a Christian's heart that always longs to see dying churches revitalized. It's not like the debate in your head about whether to fork over $2000 to the mechanic to fix your clunker of a car or to just buy a new one. It's more like a decision about whether to walk away from a dear but difficult relationship. Our hearts should never want to do that, even if once in a great while we must.Start with Andy Davis' remarkable story of reforming one church, and you'll find something that feels strangely like it's from the Bible, as if Andy were only doing what the apostles did. Then let the biblical burden of Bobby Jamieson's article sit on you. I'm serious. You just might find some new light bulbs turning on. Matt Schmucker's and Mike McKinley's articles then round out the apologetic by offering crisp statements for why churches and pastors should pursue the work of revitalizing. If you are a pastor, keep reading into the next section, where Jeramie Rinne, Greg Gilbert, John Folmar, J. D. Greear, and Brian Croft offer valuable and practical wisdom on how to proceed with the work of reform.Could it be that church revitalization does not loom as large in the modern evangelical mindset as it did in Jesus' and the apostles'? Before you answer that question, if nothing else, read Bobby's article. You just might wonder if we've missed something basic.

Book Revitalizing the Church

Download or read book Revitalizing the Church written by Kenneth Priest and published by . This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 100 years ago, Arthur Flake introduced a formula for church growth to Christendom. His methods proved to be effective, with pastors and education ministers seeing immense, effective, and healthy growth in their small-group ministries by implementing, and adhering to, Flake's five basic principles. In Revitalizing the Church through Flake's Formula, Arthur Flake's long-proven church growth strategy is re-imagined and written specifically for local church pastors as they go about their work of church revitalization. This documented process for growing churches will assist pastors who find themselves in situations with declining or plateauing church congregations, but it also offers a simplified approach for organizing and preparing churches for what God wants accomplished: reaching new people with the Gospel message of Christ.

Book Building Community

Download or read book Building Community written by Bert Anderson and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pew Research Center's 2014 Religious Land¬scape Study found that there are 5,000,000 fewer mainline Protestant adults in the U.S. than in 2007. Sunday church attendance declined ten percent or more in over half of U.S. Episcopal churches between 2012 and 2016.But not all churches are declining or holding even. Over a thousand Episcopal churches report an increase in Sunday attendance over the same five-year period. A study of Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, and Presbyterian churches shows that while a majority are in decline, a significant number are growing. One profiled congregation reported to have doubled their membership in eighteen months.Instead of focusing on failing churches, or the causes of decline, Building Community: Revitalizing Church, concentrates on the character¬istics of growing churches. Why churches are declining is not as important as what can be done to reverse the de¬cline. You cannot change the demographics of your com¬munity, but you can change how you welcome new peo¬ple, change your worship to be vibrant and engaging, change your music to attract a younger generation, avoid conflict, and find ways to minister to people in your community. Therefore, this work addresses church leaders, clergy and lay, who need information on how to build thriving congregations. Much of the data that distinguishes growing congregations come from surveys conducted by the Episcopal Church. Other mainline denominations have done similar surveys, such as The U.S. Congregational Life Survey: Fastest Growing Presbyterian Churches, com¬pleted in 2001. None, however, are as comprehensive or recent as the New FACTs of Episcopal Church Growth and Decline by C. Kirk Hadaway, completed in 2015, with factual data from 762 Episcopal Churches. The study examines some twenty characteristics of churches that were clearly growing, plateaued, or declining.Included are in depth studies of twelve Episcopal Churches that are supported by links to Transforming Episcopal Churches videos on the Episcopal Church website, that can be used to re¬verse decline in attendance, attract new mem¬bers, and build community. Hospitality, music, changing worship, use of new technologies, and community in-volvement are common elements in many of the churches profiled here. Changing a single feature of church life does not guarantee growth. A change in several areas increases the probability that your church will begin to thrive. What form these take will be different for each church. Church leaders need to discern what is right for their congrega¬tion. Read the chapters from cover to cover or skip around to topics that interest you. Make notes in the spaces pro¬vided. Read the profiles of transforming churches and watch the online videos. Soon you will see the bigger picture and can begin to make plans. Chapter 14, Steps to Large-Scale Change, is the how-you-go-about-it section. Finally, this book doesn't let you forget you are doing God's work. Keep yourself and your congregation in your prayers. Listen to your intuition. Remember God's word spoken to Joshua:Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be dis¬couraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).

Book excerpt: A New Generation Church is a church with attendees whose average age is at least as young as the average age of the community in which the church exists. Any church can become a New Generation Church that reaches and continues to reach the next generation. The Psalmist writes: We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders. (Psalm 78:4 NLT) No Christian would purposely hide the timeless truths of Christianity from the next generation. But often we do, not because of the substance of our church, but because of the approach of our church. For A New Generation is not about changing your church’s statement of faith or core beliefs. It is about evaluating and changing, as needed, your church’s programs, ministries and practices in order to more effectively connect with and stay connected with the next generation. Written for both church leaders and members, For a New Generation presents 5 practical strategies that will lay a foundation for a church to thrive for generations to come. It is based on the assumption that accepting the status quo is the greatest threat to your church’s core mission and, perhaps, to the long-term survival of your church.

Book excerpt: It's no secret: churches are dying. Tragically, thousands of churches in the United States are shrinking, some closing their doors forever. The key to reversing these trends, argues Bill Henard, is for a local church to recognize where it is in the church life cycle. Unless churches intentionally do something about it, many of them will follow the same pattern: from birth, to plateau, and eventually, to death. But if a church learns to identify its place within the life cycle and embraces the necessary processes, it can return to growth. In a day when church membership has decreased, evangelistic zeal has cooled, and budgets are disappearing, ReClaimed Church is the tool that struggling churches need. Having previously written and taught seminary courses on church revitalization, Bill Henard uses his expertise to provide all the practical insights and instructions needed to reclaim your church.
