These range from religious conflicts to ethnic and resource-based conflicts. The conflict between farmers and herders is one of the most dreaded and has generated a lot of fears of an outright war between ethnic parties to the conflict. This article traced the historical origin of the farmer-herder conflict by examining Fulani migration into the Benue Valley, pre-violent inter-group relations, and the breaking point. The presence of Fulani herders in the Benue Valley can be traced to 100 years back, and their relationship with host communities was cordial up until the late 20th century when the human population increased astronomically leading to fierce competition over scarce land and water resources. The root causes of the conflict are but not limited to drought and desertification, loss of grazing lands, new livestock and farming practices, rural banditry and cattle rustling, escalating conflict across northern Nigeria, and collapse of traditional mechanisms for conflict resolution. It is pertinent therefore for stakeholders to understand the historical context of the conflict as well as its root causes in order to proffer lasting solutions to this menace. Ranching and afforestation in Northern Nigeria are some of the solutions. The paper employed the ex-post factor research design and used primary and secondary data. Data were historically analyzed in order to understand the relationship between past events and contemporary issues in the farmer-herder conflict.

Celestine Oyom Bassey is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Calabar. He was Director of Studies at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies from 2015 to 2019. He obtained his Ph.D. in International Relations and Strategic Studies from Dalhousie University, Canada. He has more than 30 years' experience conducting research and teaching in the field of security and strategic studies. Judith Burdin Asuni founded Academic Associates PeaceWorks, the first Nigerian non-governmental organization working in conflict management, in 1992. She is the co-facilitator of the Niger Delta Dialogue, founded in 2016 as a safe space for discussion and analysis of issues concerning the Niger Delta. She obtained her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. She has more than 40 years of socially conscious work experience.

Around the turn of the millennium a number of archaeologists such as Colin Renfrew and Peter Bellwood made the controversial claim that many of the world’s major language families owe their dispersal to the adoption of agriculture by their early speakers. In this volume, their proposal is reassessed by linguists, investigating to what extent the economic dependence on plant cultivation really impacted language spread in various parts of the world. Special attention is paid to "tricky" language families such as Eskimo-Aleut, Quechua, Aymara, Bantu, Indo-European, Transeurasian, Turkic, Japano-Koreanic, Hmong-Mien and Trans-New Guinea, that cannot unequivocally be regarded as instances of Farming/Language Dispersal, even if subsistence played a role in their expansion.

The existence of civil war can dramatically slow a country's development process, especially in low-income countries which are more vulnerable to civil war conflict. Conversely, development can impede civil war. When development succeeds, countries become safer when development fails, they experience a greater risk of being caught in a conflict trap. Ultimately, civil war is a failure of development. 'Breaking the Conflict Trap' identifies the dire consequences that civil war has on the development process and offers three main findings. First, civil war has adverse ripple effects that are often not taken into account by those who determine whether wars start or end. Second, some countries are more likely than others to experience civil war conflict and thus, the risks of civil war differ considerably according to a country's characteristics including its economic stability. Finally, Breaking the Conflict Trap explores viable international measures that can be taken to reduce the global incidence of civil war and proposes a practical agenda for action. This book should serve as a wake up call to anyone in the international community who still thinks that development and conflict are distinct issues.
