Each of the 14 core chapters is organized around a change that, based on broader trends, the authors did not anticipate: a new longhouse in Sarawak, the urban forests of Java, the assertion of an ethnic minority identity in Northern Thailand, the re-shaping of class relations and identities in the Philippines, and the uncontested sell-off of farmland to cacao entrepreneurs in Sulawesi. These outcomes pose a challenge to conventional understandings of how the countryside is being re-shaped, and to what effect. The accounts in this volume map out diverse pathways to poverty or prosperity. Families who seemed trapped in poverty decades ago have prospered owing to non-farm and educational opportunities. The region is characterised by rapidly changing socioeconomic scenario, fast-increasing urbanization and longevity, changes in dietary patterns and decrease in mortality from infectious diseases. Drought, cyclones, floods, rural poverty and deprivation push rural population to flock to cities. Therefore, urbanization can be viewed as a consequence of these factors rather than the result of economic growth. This leads to environmental degradation, poverty and growth of urban slums. Rapidly growing population along with the rapid pace of urbanization and industrialisation puts pressure on the scarce resources including arable land. The food needs of the growing population has entailed considerable damage, including depletion and degradation of natural resources and unsustainable use of land and water resources. The lack of investment in human development indicators, namely education and health, has contributed to underdevelopment of these regions. This makes them vulnerable to the negative consequences of globalization.The book "Contemporary Issues in South Asia" provides insight into human problems, the capitalistic system that has caused irreversible damage to human existence, ideology given by Guru Nanak, the relationship between the human development index and its indicators, the current state of e-government development within South Asian countries, the link between governance structure and web-based reporting of financial and non-financial information, the illegal migration from Bangladesh to India, the geostrategy of Sri Lanka, the workplace diversity and the role of management to eliminate factors leading to occupational stress, the rising environmental concerns that have influenced business firms and the concept of green GDP.The book seeks to address the emerging issues of the South Asian countries, namely Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives, by presenting research and analysis, which are both cross-sectional and multi-disciplinary. These developments in the region have an influence on India’s foreign policy and also mould its domestic politics; and vice-versa. India’s policy towards individual countries also has a decisive impact on the pace of on-going political transitions in a number of spheres: civil-military relations, foreign policy of individual countries, socio-political and economic dynamics and nature of governance. These transitions reflect the nature, behaviour and response of the transitory states towards the others. India, as an important stakeholder in the region is keenly observing these transitions in its neighbourhood. This book titled: Transitions and Interdependence: India and Its Neighbours is the outcome of serious deliberations among well known scholars, diplomats and policy makers at the Fifth Asian Relations Conference organised by the Indian Council of World Affairs in collaboration with the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies in February 2014. By describing how these processes work through sociopolitical organizations, Guha delineates the historiographic legacy acquired by the British in colonial India; the creation of the centralized educational system and mass production of textbooks that led to unification of historical discourses under colonial auspices; and the divergence of these discourses in the twentieth century under the impact of nationalism and decolonization. This volume develops common approaches by focusing on geopolitical challenges, transnational security concerns, and multilateral institution-building and cooperation. The chapters, written by a cross-section of practitioners, diplomats, policymakers, and scholars from the three major powers discussed (United States, China, India) explain the opportunities and risks in the Indo-Pacific region and identify specific naval measures needed to enhance maritime security in the region. Maritime Security in the Indo-Pacific opens by introducing the Indo-Pacific and outlining the roles of China, India, and the United States in various maritime issues in the region. It then focuses on the security challenges presented by maritime disputes, naval engagement, legal issues, sea lanes of communication, energy transport, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, as well as by nontraditional threats, such as piracy, terrorism, and weapons proliferation. It compares and contrasts the roles and perspectives of the key maritime powers, analyzing the need for multilateral cooperation to overcome the traditional and nontraditional challenges and security dilemma. This shows that, in spite of their different interests, capabilities, and priorities, Washington, Beijing and New Delhi can and do engage in cooperation to deal with transnational security challenges. Lastly, the book describes how to promote maritime cooperation by establishing or strengthening multilateral mechanisms and measures that would reduce the prospects for conflict in the Indo-Pacific region.
