Download or read book Demographic Toxicity written by H. Resit Akcakaya and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume collects population and metapopulation models for a wide variety of species, focusing on the use of models in population-level risk assessment for toxins. Each chapter of Demographic Toxicity describes the application of a population model to one species, with the aim of demonstrating how various life history characteristics of the species are incorporated into the model, how ecotoxicological impacts are modeled, and how the results of the model has been or can be used in risk assessment. The model in each chapter is implemented in RAMAS software, which uses matrix modeling of population dynamics. RAMAS software is believed to be the most powerful tool ever invented for this task.Demographic Toxicity includes a CD that contains a demo version of the program and the data files for each species. The book explains how to use these specific tools for modeling, analysis, and interpretation of data. Demographic Toxicity provides a major review of current knowledge on population dynamics in different species, representing both terrestrial and aquatic environments.

Book Population Dynamics for Conservation

Download or read book Population Dynamics for Conservation written by Louis W. Botsford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management and conservation of natural populations relies heavily on concepts and results generated from models of population dynamics. Yet this is the first book to present a unified and coherent explanation of the underlying theory. This novel text begins with a consideration of what makes a good state variable, progressing from the simplest models (those with a single variable such as abundance or biomass) to more complex models with other key variables of population structure (including age, size, life history stage, and space). Throughout the book, attention is paid to concepts such as population variability, population stability, population viability/persistence, and harvest yield. Later chapters address specific applications to conservation such as recovery planning for species at risk, fishery management, and the spatial management of marine resources. Population Dynamics for Conservation is suitable for graduate-level students. It will also be valuable to academic and applied researchers in population biology. This overview of population dynamic theory can serve to further their population research, as well as to improve their understanding of population management.

Book Lower Willamette River Cold water Refuge Narrative Criterion Interpretation Study

Download or read book Lower Willamette River Cold water Refuge Narrative Criterion Interpretation Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Lower Willamette River cold-water refuge study addresses a jeopardy decision of the 2015 National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Endangered Species Act Biological Opinion on the Environmental Protection Agency's Proposed Approval of Certain Oregon Water Quality Standards Including Temperature and Intergravel Dissolved Oxygen. In the 2015 Biological Opinion, NMFS found jeopardy on the U.S. EPA’s approval of Oregon’s 2003 water temperature criterion for migration corridors. NMFS questioned the protectiveness of the 20°C criterion relative to the Salmon and Trout Rearing and Migration criterion of 18°C, because DEQ had not demonstrated how to interpret the CWR narrative provision. The CWR narrative provision supplements the numeric criterion of 20°C to protect migrating populations of salmon and steelhead, including threatened and endangered Upper Willamette and Lower Columbia River Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), and Upper Willamette and Lower Columbia River steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) that pass through the designated migration corridor to reach their spawning streams. This study satisfies the reasonable and prudent alternative identified in the Biological Opinion as a means to interpret the cold-water refuge (CWR) narrative provision in Oregon’s temperature standard in order to allow for implementation of the criterion through DEQ’s Clean Water Act authorities. The Oregon DEQ agreed to develop a cold-water refuge study for the lower 50 miles of the Willamette River in order to interpret the narrative criterion and evaluate whether there is sufficient cold-water refuge (CWR) and identify what regulatory or voluntary actions could be taken, should DEQ find that the narrative is not being met."--From executive summary (page 15).
