Book Perspectives on Perception and Action

Download or read book Perspectives on Perception and Action written by Herbert Heuer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this title aimed to present an eclectic and biased account of the status of perception-action relationships in various fields at the time. The chapters can be divided into three sections. The first focuses on motor control, a neglected topic in the past and hence deserving the role of the starting point of this volume. In addition motor control provides a good background to discuss the clear sensory and perceptual effects. However, motor processes are also highly relevant to perception, which was usually less emphasized in the literature at the time. Therefore a special section is devoted to motor processes in perception together with the issue of integrating information from different sources. The book concludes with a section on attention and selection of perceptual information for subsequent action.

Book Hand and Brain

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Elsevier

  • ISBN : 0080532748
  • Pages : 535 pages

Download or read book Hand and Brain written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-06-24 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Used for gestures of communication, environmental exploration, and the grasping and manipulating of objects, the hand has a vital role in our lives. The hand's anatomical structure and neural control are among the most complex and detailed of human motor systems.Hand and Brain is a comprehensive overview of the hand's sensorimotor control. It discusses mediating variables in perception and prehension, the coordination of muscles with the central nervous system, the nature of movement control and hand positioning, hand-arm coordination in reaching and grasping, and the sensory function of the hand.In the last decade the rapid growth of neuroscience has been paralleled by a surge of interest in hand function. This reflects the fact that many of the fundamental issues facing neuroscientists today--including the problem of relating physiology to behavior--are central to the study of sensorimotor control of the hand. This book takes a broad interdisciplinary perspective on the control of hand movements that includes neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, psychology and neuropsychology, and biomechanics. The authors, who have all made significant scientific contributions in their own right, have sought to introduce their chosen topics in a manner that the undergraduate reader will be able to follow without sacrificing detailed and up-to-date coverage ofthe major developments.Uses an interdisciplinary approach including behavioral and neurophysiological dataDescribes a variety of experimental methodologiesTreats neural computations necessary for the control of movementCovers implications of biomechanics for control, sensory mechanisms, and perceptual processing (haptics)Includes manipulative hand function as well as reachingOverviews each group of chapters using link sectionsContains an integrated index and a glosssaryThe five sections cover:Mediating variables in perception and prehensionThe coordination of muscles with the central nervous systemThe nature of movement control and hand positioningHand-arm coordination in reaching and graspingThe sensory function of the hand

Book Cerebral Control of Speech and Limb Movements

Download or read book Cerebral Control of Speech and Limb Movements written by G.R. Hammond and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-12-06 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussed in this book is the association between speech and movements, especially those of the preferred hand. Both are skilled motor activities that appear to depend upon a similar neural organization that is available in the left hemisphere of the brain. The nature of this association of the cerebral control of speech and skilled manual performance is discussed in four sections: 1. Motor control and speech examines speech as a motor activity2. Language and gesture examines the correspondence between spoken language and manual gesture3. Motor performance and aphasia examines the motor impairments associated with aphasias4. Interactions of speech and manual performance examines the interactions that occur between concurrent verbal and manual activities

Without sacrificing scientific precision, this clear and concise work presents on the one hand the different methods and modern applications, on the other hand the biophysical fundamentals of ion-channel and carrier proteins. Numerous and carefully selected illustrations and diagrams supplement the text. Each chapter is extended by a detailed table of Take-Home Messages. Questions at the end of each chapter allow readers to test their understanding. Each section also includes references to relevant original literature for further reading. The book offers a valuable resource for students of biology, chemistry and physics with a special interest in biophysics.
