Part 1 explores the sources of public unease, such as the way in which nuclear waste had failed to be properly contained in the past. Part 2 looks at the search for a waste policy and the introduction of The Nuclear Waste Policy Act. Part 3 examines the waste problem from the standpoint of it being an international issue, and finally, Part 4 looks to the future and the lessons that we can learn from past nuclear waste management failures. Book The Bedrock of Opinion

Download or read book The Bedrock of Opinion written by G. Sundqvist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did man discover nuclear waste? To answer this question, we first have to ask if nuclear waste really is something that could be called a scientific discovery, such as might deserve a Nobel Prize in physics. In early writings within nuclear energy research radioactive waste appears to be a neglected issue, a story never told. Nuclear waste first seems to appear when a public debate arose about public health risks of nuclear power in the late 1960s and early 70s. In nuclear physics, consensus was established at an early stage about the understanding of the splitting of uranium nuclei. The fission products were identified and their chains of disintegration and radioactivity soon were well established facts among the involved scientists, as was an awareness of the risks, for example the strong radioactivity of strontium and iodine, and the poisonous effects of plutonium. However, the by-products were never, either in part or in total, called or perceived as waste, just as fission by-products. How and where to dispose of the by-products were questions that were never asked by the pioneers of nuclear physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of nuclear power plants in the United States is stopping, as regulators, reactor manufacturers, and operators sort out a host of technical and institutional problems. This volume summarizes the status of nuclear power, analyzes the obstacles to resumption of construction of nuclear plants, and describes and evaluates the technological alternatives for safer, more economical reactors. Topics covered include: Institutional issues-including regulatory practices at the federal and state levels, the growing trends toward greater competition in the generation of electricity, and nuclear and nonnuclear generation options. Critical evaluation of advanced reactors-covering attributes such as cost, construction time, safety, development status, and fuel cycles. Finally, three alternative federal research and development programs are presented.

Book Nuclear Waste Management in a Globalised World

Download or read book Nuclear Waste Management in a Globalised World written by Urban Strandberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-level nuclear waste (HLW) is a controversial and risky issue. For the next 100 years, the HLW will be subject to policy decisions and value assessments. Physically safe, technologically stable, and socio-economically sustainable HLW-management will top the agenda. That must be accomplished in a society whose segments are both stable and in a rapid state of flux, under the influence of global as well as national factors, private interests as well as the vagaries of national politics. Among the challenges to be faced is how to codify responsibilities of nuclear industry, governments and international organisations, and any adopted management policy must attain legitimacy at the local, national, regional and global levels. All such considerations raise questions about the practical and theoretical knowledge. This special issue book will address these questions by exploring HLW-management in Canada, France, Germany, India, Sweden, the UK and the USA. Special emphasis will be placed on highlighting national context, current trends and uncertainties, with relevance to a socially sustainable contemporary and future HLW-management.

Book Organizing Democracy

Download or read book Organizing Democracy written by Göran Sundström and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governance has emerged a central concept in the fields of both political theory and public administration. But it has not done so without controversy and this book examines one of the primary concerns associated with the theory and practice of government namely, its relationship to democratic values and their practical realization. Moreover, it does this through a neglected perspective. Whereas most research on governance has taken a top down approach, these essays look at specific empirical experiences from the bottom up. The book thus offers a new and useful discussion on an essential question in contemporary debates about governance. Frank Fischer, Rutgers University, US Nationally and supra-nationally, political decision-making shifts from democratic fora to decentralized organizations of what is called governance . Questions arise about the survival of democratic values in unaccountable structures that assign agency to special interests and to professional and non-governmental expertise. Organizing Democracy provides detailed case studies of these new forms, and assesses how they carry or deflect democratic values. It will be of great interest to students of new organizational forms, and those concerned with the maintenance of democracy. John W. Meyer, Stanford University, US The proliferation of interactive forms of governance may challenge and problemematize the predominant model of liberal representative democracy. Nevertheless, the new governance arrangements may also contribute to a reinvigoration of democracy in the face of the growing democratic disenchantment. Instead of continuing the endless theoretical debates on this issue, this book presents a number of empirical studies of how democracy is articulated and re-articulated by a plethora of actors in the new interactive governance arenas. As such, the book provides a most welcome analysis of the embryonic reinvention of democracy in our increasingly complex, fragmented and multi-layered societies. Jacob Torfing, Roskilde University, Denmark This fresh and fascinating book adds an organizational perspective to the analysis of governance and democracy. It argues that a number of organizational factors challenge the notion of agency assumed by a governance model. The expert contributors criticize the governance model for resting on the rational myth and the assumption that democratic ideals can be translated to specified democratic values, which in turn can be adhered to by democratic agents. By adding an organizational perspective to the analysis of governance and democracy, the book proves that theories about organizing and the construction of agency can be used to explain how and why democratic values are attended to in governance structures. Organizing Democracy will prove essential reading for researchers and postgraduate students in public management, organizational studies, political science and sociology. Practitioners with an interest in public management policy will also find this book invaluable.
