Book Community Associations and Centres

Download or read book Community Associations and Centres written by Alan C. Twelvetrees and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-18 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community Associations and Centres: A Comparative Study is a comparative study of four community associations and centers in Edinburgh, Scotland (Sighthill, Leith, Pentland, and Pilton). The place of community associations against the much wider background of social change is examined, paying particular attention to issues such as whether the community association is a response to the decline of other social institutions such as the churches. Comprised of 12 chapters, this book first provides an overview of community associations and community work before focusing on community associations in Scotland in general and in Edinburgh in particular. The evolution of community associations in Sighthill, Leith, Pentland, and Pilton is then considered, along with the role of local authorities in encouraging the growth of community associations. Subsequent chapters deal with patterns of membership and attendance in community associations as well as financial arrangements; purposes and activities; the leadership factor in the development of a community association; problems of communication and organizational structure; and the need for professional staff. This monograph will be of interest to social historians, sociologists, social policymakers, and community workers.

Book An Introduction to Community Development

Download or read book An Introduction to Community Development written by Rhonda Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the foundations of community development, An Introduction to Community Development offers a comprehensive and practical approach to planning for communities. Road-tested in the authors’ own teaching, and through the training they provide for practicing planners, it enables students to begin making connections between academic study and practical know-how from both private and public sector contexts. An Introduction to Community Development shows how planners can utilize local economic interests and integrate finance and marketing considerations into their strategy. Most importantly, the book is strongly focused on outcomes, encouraging students to ask: what is best practice when it comes to planning for communities, and how do we accurately measure the results of planning practice? This newly revised and updated edition includes: increased coverage of sustainability issues, discussion of localism and its relation to community development, quality of life, community well-being and public health considerations, and content on local food systems. Each chapter provides a range of reading materials for the student, supplemented with text boxes, a chapter outline, keywords, and reference lists, and new skills based exercises at the end of each chapter to help students turn their learning into action, making this the most user-friendly text for community development now available.

Book Community Leadership Development

Download or read book Community Leadership Development written by Mark A. Brennan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of leadership capacities addresses a vital and continuing need in communities and organizations as they attempt to adapt to a wide range of social, economic, environmental, and political changes. Leadership development activities that focus on building new skills and fostering new ideas directly shape local and organizational capacity. At the organizational level, leadership is a valued resource as organizations are faced with challenges of limited resources, funding, and other capacities. Community leadership operates within a different domain; an environment with different dynamics, structures, and goals. Community leadership is distinctive in that leaders often do not have formal training or authority to dictate and facilitate change. Instead, community leaders must rely on informal networks of diverse citizens, each with a unique local capacity, as the basis for change. This book brings together classic and contemporary articles drawn from Community Development. Divided into two sections, the book begins with a range of seminal leadership theory and conceptualization pieces. These have been instrumental in shaping leadership development in a wide range of settings. Following the theory section, a variety of research and application chapters are presented. These chapters operationalize theory through applied research and programming, and provide replicable frameworks for future research and programs. This book is a compilation of articles published in the journal Community Development.

Book 50 Years of Community Development Vol II

Download or read book 50 Years of Community Development Vol II written by Norman Walzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 50th anniversary publication provides a comprehensive history of community development. Beginning in 1970 with the advent of the Community Development Society and its journal shortly thereafter, Community Development, the editors have placed the chapters in major themed areas or issues pertinent to both research and practice of community development. The evolution of community development as an area of scholarship and application, and the subsequent founding of the discipline, is vital to capture. At the 50-year mark, it is particularly relevant to revisit issues that reoccur throughout the last five decades and look at approaches to addressing them. These include issues and themes around equity and inclusion, collective impact, leadership and policy development, as well as resilience and sustainability. Community change over time has much to teach us, and this set will provide a foundation for fostering understanding of the history of community development and its focus on community change. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Community Development.

Book Development Organizations

Download or read book Development Organizations written by Rebecca Schaaf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing debates over the meaning of development and awareness of the persistence of poverty have resulted in increasing concern over how to ‘do’ development. There are growing numbers of development organizations, undertaking different activities, at different scales, with different motivations, and differing levels of success. It is necessary to identify and evaluate these varied organizations, in order to recognize their successes and failures. Development Organizations is the first introductory text to focus specifically on the variety of organizations involved in development policy and practice. It explores the range and role of organizations, including community-based organizations and civil society actors, international non-governmental organizations, state and other national-based actors, global forms of governance, international financial institutions and transnational corporations. The historical and contemporary role of each of these actors is considered, with analysis of complex theoretical debates surrounding their existence and their activities. The book also explores the political and contested nature of development activities promoted by these organizations, and their effects on society, the economy and the environment. These issues are also considered in context of the Millennium Development Goals; the agenda which currently impacts on the operation and outcomes of the broad range of development organizations. This invaluable text is richly complimented throughout with case studies to help illustrate the operations of development organizations; from the impact of multinational oil companies in the Niger delta to the impact of IMF reforms in Latin America and the Caribbean. This clearly written and user friendly text contains a wealth of features to assist student learning, including start of chapter learning outcomes, and end of chapter summaries, discussion topics, and suggestions for further reading and relevant websites.
