In eight chapters, the relationship between individual-level and country-level variables and their impact on attitudes toward and evaluations of welfare policies is explored. There are six research projects included in the book. Five of them focus on the European case, while the last one points out differences in welfare state attitudes between Europe and the United States. A comparative analysis can be conducted because cross-national data on attitudes towards the welfare state have recently become available. All of the research projects in the book are based on the module Welfare Attitudes in a Changing Europe of the 2008 European Social Survey. It is assumed that the data is comparable because the questionnaire, although translated into the local language, is the same for all participating countries.

The answer that this book provides is that this is to an important extent a result of how domestic labour market and welfare state institutions have approached the question of inclusion and exclusion, since immigration policy does not stand independent from these central policy areas. Given the explosive reaction from Middle Eastern governments, Muslim clerics, and some Danish politicians, the stage was set for a backlash against Muslims in Denmark. But no such backlash occurred. Paradoxes of Liberal Democracy shows how the majority of ordinary Danish citizens provided a solid wall of support for the rights of their country's growing Muslim minority, drawing a sharp distinction between Muslim immigrants and Islamic fundamentalists and supporting the civil rights of Muslim immigrants as fully as those of fellow Danes—for example, Christian fundamentalists. Building on randomized experiments conducted as part of large, nationally representative opinion surveys, Paradoxes of Liberal Democracy also demonstrates how the moral covenant underpinning the welfare state simultaneously promotes equal treatment for some Muslim immigrants and opens the door to discrimination against others.
